View Full Version : Destroyer

I found out about them about a year ago. It is mainly just one guy (Dan Bejar). I think he is from toronto. He is also in The New Pornographers. The album "Destroyer's Rubies" is really good. I suggest all of you take a listen to Destroyer. If you want you can read up on it on Pitchfork Media.

Destoyer's Rubies is one solid album.

I've got Destroyer's Rubies and I think it's quite good.

Destroyer's Rubies is an amazing album to start listening to Destroyer, you should all also check out Your Blues. Infact, I would suggest going backwards through his albums, as everyone is a powerhouse of his unique sound.

EDIT! I also highly recommend his new band (Swan Lake) and the two bands (three if you count Bejar from the New Pornographers) it's made of, Frog Eyes and Wolf Parade.

I recommend Frog Eyes and Wolf Parade as well, but I have heard that Swan Lake isn't as great as it could have been and that a lot of peeps had wanted it to be much better.

^I am one of those "peeps". I tried to love Swan Lake, but, with the exception of a few songs, they just couldn't match Destroyer, Sunset Rubdown, Frog Eyes, or Wolf Parade.

Good to know, good to know. I was wondering if I should really check them out or not.

By the way, Hilarious avatar, Arrested Development is gold.

^Thanks! It really was a great show.

^ The Best.

Destroyer's Rubies lyrics are like a novel almost. Real solid.

09-24-2007, 11:39 AM

More of you people should check out Destroyer, and in particular Rubies, which is pure bliss.

09-24-2007, 12:19 PM
streethawk: a seduction is better than rubies in my opinion, but rubies might be a more solid album. does that make sense?

09-25-2007, 09:43 AM
Streethawk is a masterpiece too of course. I'd say Streethawk might grow a bit quicker on you than Rubies does. But Rubies lasts longer, and I'm not even bored of it even though I've probably listened to it > 200 times =)

12-10-2007, 11:53 PM
i really like streethawk but i think destroyer's rubies is a little better. i really like the more orchestrated songs, on that one. the bad arts is a really good song though, and you can here a pavement-ish influence on some of streethawk.

and i really like swan lake as well actually, bejar and krug can do no wrong. frog eyes freaks me out though.

12-11-2007, 12:03 AM
funny that this got bumped. i listened to a shit ton of destroyer last week.

pretty excited for the new album and for Hello Blue Roses, even though from what i understand bejar only sings back up vocals...

and i really like swan lake as well actually, bejar and krug can do no wrong. frog eyes freaks me out though.
is swan lake worth getting? i have been meaning to for the longest time, but i have been lazy about it.

what frog eyes do you have? i have "Tears of the Valedictorian" and i quite like it

12-11-2007, 12:41 AM
the golden river, it's a slow grower. i think the fact that they're canadian is what made me try to at least give it another listen. the swan lake album as a whole i think is good, favourite songs are all fires, are you swimming in her pools?, widow's walk, but these are pretty much sunuset rubdown or destroyer songs.

i'm thinking of getting this night. yey or nay?

12-11-2007, 12:51 AM
this night seems to be the weakest album out of the destroyer albums i have.

get city of daughters if you don't have it

Dan Bejar rox d00d.

"Destroyer" is also the name of a very good song by the Stills.

Y'know. Just sayin'.

12-12-2007, 06:22 PM
Ew The Stills.

12-12-2007, 07:31 PM
Hellooooo, are we all forgetting about a little album by the name of 'The Great Destroyer' from the best band on the planet?!

12-12-2007, 09:14 PM

jk. low ain't bad. they got me feeling like christmas.

12-13-2007, 12:25 AM

I love Low. :D

03-18-2008, 10:51 PM
got the new destroyer over the weekend. i'm gonna say it's better than rubies and streethawk but they're all pretty great. recommended songs: rivers, dark leaves from a thread, my favorite year, foam hands, the state sounds like a pavement song, they always seem to put one of those in.

03-18-2008, 11:35 PM
no way, better than both of those?
wow. i need to get this now.

03-18-2008, 11:39 PM
at first i thought rubies was better but i listened to that again and i was wrong. i found the lyrics kinda lacking at some points on the new one though, but that may be b/c i have no idea what he's singing about...yet.

03-20-2008, 02:08 PM
Destroyer, Swan Lake, Wolf Parade, Frog Eyes, The New Pornographers, Sunset Rubdown.

Anything Spencer Krueg and Dan Bejar touch turns to gold.

I've been meaning to start a Destroyer thread for a long long time. Kudos!

I'm seeing The New Pornographers with Okkervil River in a few weeks. Should be great.

03-20-2008, 05:13 PM
Low is so good.

03-20-2008, 08:35 PM
^ this is all wyldgibsonplyr's fault.

04-16-2009, 09:57 PM
i traded in Trouble In Dreams a couple months ago :p:

anyone heard Swan Lake - Enemy Mine? I'm a little unsure on it, at times it's great, other times kinda mediocre. Krug's songs were kinda meh, the best are probably Mercer's; Spanish Gold, 2044

04-17-2009, 12:58 PM
Destroyer is doing some shows this year. I'm pretty sure it's a solo tour(Dan only, no back-up band). I saw him play like this a couple of years ago in Ottawa. It was great seeing/hearing him create a full spectrum of sound solo. I'm not saying Simian/Silver Apples style.

09-06-2009, 03:06 PM
has anybody heard bay of pigs yet? i hear it's pretty different from his ususal style, but awesome nonetheless. can someone confirm this?

09-06-2009, 04:21 PM
^ I was lucky enough to get the vinyl. I haven't listened to it yet because my record player broke a while ago. However, due to my epic soldering skills and having a lot of time on my hands, that is now fixed and I should be able to listen to it and confirm that soon!

09-06-2009, 05:33 PM
damnit, i meant to pre-order but went on a trip (to Vancouver, no less!) and so forgot.

08-28-2010, 01:12 AM

08-28-2010, 02:32 PM
one of those can't wait things.

08-30-2010, 10:54 AM
read about this the other day, i'm really excited. will be pretty devastated if i don't get a copy.

09-08-2010, 11:15 PM
anyone see the allusions in Notorious Lightning to Dostoevsky's Notes From Underground? the points that jump out are:
- snow
- "crystal jets" and "there is a monument" (crystal palace?)
- "you warn the ladies not to be corrupted by their looks"
- Sandra (as Liza?)
- "and it never comes off like you planned it"
and i'm sure the final lines relate to it as well. i think i'll reread Notes just in case i'm mistaken.

edit: what the **** is this shit

03-22-2011, 11:15 PM
oh baby, Kaputt.

shouldn't have sat around not listening to this.

03-30-2011, 07:18 PM
Kaputt is fantastic enough by itself, but the video made me lol pretty hard too

03-31-2011, 01:14 AM
