has anyone ever been in a band where they have to basically teach everyone else how to play?

or you've had a band member who completely sucked but thought he/she was the best thing ever and tried to lead the band?

both of these have happened in all the bands that i've been in

Yeah, it's kinda like that with my band. Except not as much. My singer/keyboardist isn't a good singer, and he can really only play basic triads on piano. Bleh. And then my bassist is good, but he can't play anything outside of his metal stuff.

What genre did your band (or bands) attempt to play?

same with my band but they need me to lead them....and trust me they really do

one was hard rock- our other guitarist sucked and insisted on playing lead and he'd been playing for not even a year and he did what ever guitarist who doesnt know how to play lead would have done...he sucked and our singer would never sing he would either scream(hardcore) or sing in falsetto(gay) our drummer was pretty good though
one was alternative- that one actually worked out in the end, i had to do a lot of teaching but it all came together eventually

With some music now (Green Day, Fall Out Boy, ect.) all you need is a guitar with humbuckers and the ability to play 3 chords repetitively. HeHehe

thios same shit happened to my uncle when he wqas 14-15 yrs old...he was playin since he was 8 and he was asked to play in a band...the only thing is that he band coulndt read music and didnt know any theory ..soo my uncle taught all the kids hows to read music and then one day they just kicked him out. needless to say my uncles new band played all over the other bands ass, that kicked him out, to win a battle of the bands competion.

all my bandmates are really good at their respective instruments, but our singer has horrible timing so it takes him a long time to get a song right

but once he has it, it's fine

Wow I hate that. It only really happens to young bands who are not very serious however. Just quit and find a good band.

thats cool that they beat the other band in battle of the bands

This bassist annoys me. Me and my drummer were like "K we need a bassist, lets get this kid."

Hes like "yeah I can play all this stuff, RHCP and sublime. I'm good"

He comes in and im like play something. He said what do you want me to play?
I said can you play californication?
And hes like "yeah!"
So he starts to play something, and im like Wtf was that?
So I had to reteach him the whole song. I hate teaching bassists. I play better than him and I've only played bass a couple times.

I can't wait till this bandwagon goes off a cliff...

Ever heard The Beatles? Tom Petty? Johnny Cash? Bob Dylan?

Music doesn't need to have palm-muted Drop-C riff's and 34 solo's of whammy bar wankery to be good. It alright to write simple music aswell, if people enjoy it let them. What would you rather listen to? A good song with 3 chord's or a sh*t song with 30? ;)

Me too, except the drummer does his thing. I write the lyrics (but don't sing), write all our songfs and tell the bassist what too play (too his credit he usully changes them and makes them more his own, since I tought him a few scales and stuff).

It does get annoying. In the two bands I'm in, im the only one with a legitimate knowledge of theory to be able to write songs well.

Hmm?

There are plenty of good songs that use '30 chords'

i agree a good song with 3 chords is better than a song that sucks that has 30 chords

That happened to me! But they lived 100 miles away from the rest of the band so we sorta kicked him out without telling him.

^I prefer to listen to complicated songs. It means there's more to listen to, it makes the music unpredictable, and more reason to listen to the song over and over.

the worst thing is when my band was in a different format, our singer (now drummer) taught our old drummer all the drum beats for Iron Man (yes, in a old format we tried Iron Man)

Amusingly, two years ago my bass player and drummer had never played anything before, but I had some kit in my cellar, so just showed them there first chops on bass and drums (i had to show him an 8 beat, FGS), but hey, it was more important to me to do something creative with my friends, and its worked out pretty well check out www.myspace.com/se7enevermusic and see what you think of them now. any feedback, PM me.
