Do you guys think that Call Me The Breeze by Lynyrd Skynyrd/JJ Cale is a good opener? If not, what would be a good opener for a band that plays Skynyrd, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Zeppelin etc?

EDIT: Do you guys think that Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) by Jimi Hendrix would be a good opener?

THUNDERSTRUCK - AC/DC
or
STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN - Led Zeppelin
or
FREEBIRD - Lynard Skynyrd

Openers are a tough thing; have have to set the mood and give the crowd energy. Just because of the simple driving beats of AC/DC I'd recommend something by them. Maybe Hells Bells because of the cool riff that sorta warms the crowd up before the whole thing really kicks in.

Highway to Hell seems like a particularly good one to me too with the way it starts...

^Thunderstruck would be excellent... Stairway or Freebird make better closers imo.

Highway To Hell/Back in Black

though they are cliché of course..

Learn the version they did at Knebworth 79': that would be AMAZING.

Gotta be Back in Black, just because that opening riff will get everyone in the entire building interested even if there not fans of the music.

WHOLE LOTTA ROSIE - AC/DC
RIFF RAFF - AC/DC

those are some really fast paced songs to really get the crowd moving but now that i think of it i would play that after the opener

Rock and roll by Zep would be a good one to do. For an opener i'd play one of your more upbeat, catchy covers, although something like Sweet home alabama would work fine too.

Since you wrote etc, i assume that you are a hard rock type of outfit, so therefore you should play the greatest opener i have ever seen. When Motley Crue opened with "kickstart my Heart" the crowd was electric. Great opener. IF you are not into motley crue, For those about to rock is pretty cool although has the potential to be a great closer as well.

Toys in the Attic by Aerosmith. You seem to enjoy that song a bit...

No I do not think that Skynyrd song you suggested was good.

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN - Led Zeppelin
or
FREEBIRD - Lynard Skynyrd

These are closers

although your first suggestion (Thunderstruck) would be a very good idea

Call me the Breeze isn't a bad opener by any means but it would depend on what other songs you would be doing really...

A rock anthem, of which Ac/Dc has many. Try shot down in flames, or let there be rock.

^ Kikstart my heart has the temporary effect of crack on music listeners. It would put any crowd in a frenzy.

Really anything that is somewhat known, High speed, and with a rippin' guitar riff intro.

motley crue opened carnival of sins with shout at the devil, and that gets the crowd pumped for the next song (too fast for love) which in turn got them pumped for 10 seconds to love, so maybe a song with a similar effect to that?

so you could actually do shout at the devil because you can get the crowd involved during the chorus:)

Welcome to the Jungle? I know your influences are more classic rock, but that song has an awesome riff which most people know, and it is a crowd pumper.

AC/DC. So many of thier songs are recognisable, and they all have driving beats and guitars to get the crowd pumped. Try a song like:

Thunderstruck
Shoot To Thrill
Riff Raff
Live Wire
Stiff Upper Lip

My personal favorite is Stiff Upper Lip. It has that catchy guitar riff by itself, and the lyrics in the beginng, and then the pause where Brian Johnson sings "I was born with a stiff... Stiff upper lip..." and then the song just explodes with the drums, second guitar, and more powerful vocals. I think it'll be a great song, and I have yet to hear a very well done cover of that song.

BUt do you guys think that Call Me The Breeze is a good opener?

Not in my opinion. Call Me The Breeze might be better for the middle of the set. I'd use maybe Back in Black or Highway To Hell to start the show.

The best ones said so far are Toys, and Kickstart. Stranglehold would be awesome, or would just suck, depends on how good you are. For Whom the Bell Tolls would be good too.

My band uses Miserlou, which is great because it's so well known and at the start where i just tremolo pick the open e our singer introduces everyone and they do like a little solo (only a few seconds) and when she introduces me i start the main riff. It's a great opener IMO

How about Tom Sawyer? I know thats going away a bit from the type of bands you mentioned, but, whatever, its a fun rock anthem. The crowd would probably be jumping. Or something.

theres one basic guideline for opening for a classic rock band
as an opener your not expected to play ballads
play only energetic rock songs

One of These Days (I'm Going To Cut You Into Little Pieces) by Pink Floyd.

Best opener EVER. Why do you think they opened Meddle with it?

voodoo child would be an excellent opener, everybody loves that...
rock and roll all night wouldnt be too bad either....... nearl any song off Appetite for Dsetruction would make a good opener. but then again, nearly ALL AC/DC songs make good openers, such a huge drive behind them!

"I've got big balls" by AC/DC is a perfect opener. That'll really get the crowd's attention in more ways than one. Or you could play "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" by AC/DC.

voo-doo chile IS a wicked opener but my bands BEST opener is "ain't that a shame"by cheap trick ya just cant beat that intro!
