So, I was wondering, what are some "must know" songs that every guitarist should learn to play?
I'll start the list right now are Sweet Home Alabama and Stairway to Heaven.
What else should be on the list?

Oh, man .. So many, and too many to list. I don't know anyone that can't play at least the intro to "Crazy Train", or a bit of "Master of Puppets". Other than that, it's all a matter of opinion. For instance, I would consider "Simple Man" more of a "must know" than "Sweet Home Alabama".

well if you can get all of those from start to finish then you don't have to worry about "must know" songs because you probably know them all and people will be shitting their pants left and right every time you pick up a guitar. :D

Oohh, were sorry, you will not pass go or collect two hundred dollars. Actually, go directly to the pit, or electric guitar instead.
