I have a few questions about modes. First, I know that the modes of the major scale follow a pattern of wwhwwwh and then whwwwhw etc. But do the modes for the minor scales follow this pattern as well? Also, there are modes for major, harmonic minor, and melodic minor, but what about natural minor? Is there a set of modes for that scale?

The naturdal minor scale, that is, aeolian is a diatonic scale and goes along with the major, dorian, phrygian etc.

There are different modes in the other ones that that guy above mentioned (relating to the harmonic minor and melodic minor).

I'm not sure how to phrase my confusion. How can melodic minor modes be different when they descend? Do you mean the modes for natural minor can only be played descending?

Melodic minor descending = Natural minor
the main difference is the 7th degree which acts as a leading tone to the tonic when ascending. (edit..see guitar dudes post for explanation of the other intervals)

Thats' the classical definition & use but it's perfectly fine to play melodic minor the same both ascending & descending too which can be used in a jazz context or any context really that sounds good to you.

The melodic minor has 2 forms. The Ascending form sharpens the 6th and 7th degrees and the descending form uses the unsharpened degrees.

The reason for this is because the Harmonic Minor scale has the sharpened 7th degree to lead to tonic better, the 6th was sharpened to reduce the interval between the flat 6th and #7 to form the ascending melodic minor.

In the descending form, the unsharpened 6th leads to the dominant better and the unsharpened 7th lowers the gap in the interval between the 6th and 7th degree.

in the Melodic Minor modes Mixolydian b6 is more often called the Mixolydian b13, and its a Locrian#2 rather than Natural 2 although it's the same. What you've called the altered dominant scale is called just altered or superlocrian.

It's never called Locrian #2. Locrian #2 is a descriptive name that would imply the Locrian mode with an augmented second, when it isn't. It's the Locrian mode with a natural second.

Well that's what I've gotten out of a book on jazz theory. It's called a Locrian #2 as the 2nd note is a semitone higher than in the standard locrian scale.
