That's too sad....

I loved Calvin And Hobbes comics. Especially the ones when he gets ambushed at the front door, and the ones when Calvin says something along the lines of " I'm not playing with a full deck of cards...." and hobbes says "Thats what they all say."

not real...
waterson didn't draw that, the cartoon style is wrong
plus it would have been stupid to end calvin + hobbes in a weekday strip
it ended with a weekend color panel

it's still sad... had watterson ended it this way i would have cried... but thankfully he ended the strip with an inspiring, beautiful cartoon with the words "it's a magical world, hobbes. Let's go exploring!"... with basically sums it all up, doesn't it?

this thread is proof of how great a cartoon Calvin and Hobbes was, even 12 years after its ending people are still touched by it, and are so familiar with the strips world that something as - taken out of context - perfectly normal as the first strip can induce such strong feeling of sadness, discomfort and confusion. Calvin and Hobbes was, is and always will be a place to retreat to when the real world isn't home.

I know it's fake but that strip makes a lot of sense, eventually Calvin would stop imagining Hobbes was real.

Now thats a beautiful ending. If you've read Watterson's commentaries in the 10th anniversary book, you'd know he would never have done the OP's posted strip..

Watterson never specified the true nature of Hobbes. You don't know if he was real, imaginary, who knows. Its all in how you see it. To me it makes more sense that he was magical and would come to life when adults weren't around. Maybe if he was alive only in Calvin's head he still had a life of his own.

The great thing about Calvin and Hobbes was how quickly it could go from a comforting story of childhood to being the most intelligent bit of commentary in the paper.

When Hobbes is a stuffed toy in one panel and alive in the next, I'm juxtaposing the "grown-up" version of reality with Calvin's version, and inviting the reader to decide which is truer.[9] -the guy who made it.

Hobbes' intangibility is called into question, however, when he pounces on Calvin (often leaving Calvin disheveled) and in one incident, ties him to a chair in such a way that his father is unable to understand how he could have done it himself. In another Hobbes leaves Calvin hanging by the seat of his pants from a tree branch above Calvin's head.

from wikipedia.

he has to be real!!!!!

Stupid robot chicken - make fun of such a classic :(
But yeah - that ending seemed quite real at first. And Im pretty sure that it does not end with that strip from "It's A Magical World".
I love Calvin and Hobbes - Ive got most of the books and theyre so awesome. Bill Waterson is a genious.
EDIT: Holy crap - that winter strip is the last one. Wow, what an awesome grand finale.

I still read Calvin and Hobbes to this day. I love it. Bill Waterson isn't only an amazing cartoonist, but he's a phenomenal artist. He knows all about visually appealing usage of space. And his commentary is amazing.

I'm not gonna lie, although it's a fake, that's incredibly sad. It's inevitable that Calvin will grow out of his imagination, and Hobbes will be nothing more than a childhood memory. It's depressing to think that the innocence portrayed in the strip could be shattered by something as sure as time.

Yeah it's fake.

Everyone knows Calvin and Hobbes ended with a Magical World. The line 'It's a magical world Hobbes... lets go exploring! ended it.

It's annoying when people try to imitate artists and completely miss the point.
