What metal band do you guys think has the best guitar tone? For me, it's Opeth overall, but Necrophagist's solo tone is god like.

Behemoth in "Satanica, Zos Zia Kultus, Demigod"

I always loved the Slaughter of the soul tone. Behemoth's is pretty sweet and Decapitated's rules. Nile's tone does suck though, too muddy, not enough clarity.

(:JewishSatan:)
07-29-2007, 12:03 AM
I love Niles guitar tone, that's I have to say. You cant expect the clearest tone in drop A, but Niles tone is so deep it makes me feel like Thor.

Alucard II
07-29-2007, 12:28 AM
clarity has nothing to do with register of tuning. Karls guitar has an extended scale; the muddiness is not related to the tuning

Opeth's clean tones, and Nevermore's distorted tones.

Pantera's tone on VDOP, Megadeth's on RIP, Cannibal Corpse's on Kill and Strapping Young Lad's tone are all good ones aswell. Morbid Angel's tone is completely perfect for what they play, I don't think I'd use it though.

And again. The only person with a rougher guitar sound than Jus Oborn is Dave Chandler from Saint Vitus.

And Ritchie Blackmore of course, possibly the heaviest sounds to have ever come out of a Strat.

I'm not a fan of necrophagist's tone, too full on the mid for me. I prefer decapitated's tone, if we're talking tech death metal. But IMHO Machine Head have the best tone of all, followed by arch enemy

At The Gates on Slaughter Of The Soul.

The Haunted also have great tone, thanks to Anders Björler.

Did he and Martin Larsson use 5150s on SOTS? It certainly sounds like it.

I've read some interview with the producer of that album and he claims that along with the solid sate peavey and the homemade cab (which had two busted speakers) they used a boss metal zone on the clean channel.

The older Metal Zones were less fizzy, though, and the Boss Heavy Metal was used by Dave Gilmour in the '80s. It actually had pretty good tone.

That explains alot, I was comparing it to my own metal zone so I went :wtf: when I read it.

Nile and behemoth suck live??? hmmm okay  they are recognised as the biggest death metal bands ever for many people, but they suck live? Maybe they aren't 'the best live bands' out there but they certainly don't suck live.

Am I gonna get flamed for saying The Black Dahlia Murder on their new album (Nocturnal)? That tone is ****in' amazing, really powerful and full but with surprisingly low gain.

On a similar topic, anyone here know how to make a similar tone using a Marshall JCM-800 and a Boss Metal Zone pedal? Prolly can't be done, but...

Testament in "First Strike, still Deadly"
Exodus in "Tempo Of The Damned" which imo sounds exactly like testament
Behemoth in "Satanica, Zos Zia Kultus, Demigod"
Opeth in Mostly everything
Death in "Sound Of Perseverance"
Iced Earth in "Dark Saga, Burnt Offerings, Smth Wicked This Way Comes"
Kreator "Violent revolution, Outcast"
Necrophagist in both
Nevermore in "Dead Heart In A Dead World"
Sodom "M-16, Masquerade In Blood"

Those were in the top of my head.
I absolutely LOVE the tone of that album. Not just the guitar tone either, Chuck's voice was godly there.

its a bit vague just to mention the bands name. I mean for example Carcass's guitar tone changed vastly from album to album. the raw guitar tone of Reek Of Putrefaction is light years away from the compressed crunch of Heartwork. be specific.
