Speaking of which... my dad (a Berklee grad himself) knew Mike Stern in high school. Also said he was a "real dickhead of a guitarist" (I think we all know that type.

We're also talking a high schooler verses a grown man
But he still has sort of a smug attitude on his album cover:

those two don't go thant crazy
i mean, they are really good musicians, and i love john mclaughlin but i can think of them as "crazy" jazz, even though mclaughlin partipated in (IMO) one of the craziest jazz albums, but then again, keyboards and drums are what makes that album so crazy
look a few post above for my post, and you'll find out what i'm talking about

Its not really jazz, but it has a jazz guitarist. "Shakti" with John McLaughlin. Its like a mix of indian music with the jazz of McLaughlin, and it's mostly improved with songs clocking the hour mark. The only CD i have of it is "Remember Shakti", so I guess I've never heard the real Shakti. I don't really describe what they play as "songs" but more as just "music" if you know what I mean :).
