SublimeGuitar

I dont think i ever seen a multi octave bass that goes higher than 12 strings in a production model, but if you have the cash you could probably get one custom made.

if you're buying one for the novelty of having 18 strings.. i wouldn't bother

It'll just be to make people say 'Wow that dude's playing a one million string bass! That means he must be good'

Warr guitars make basses up to 14 strings, if you're willing to compensate.

more pics to come

Get a piano already!

then you'd have 288 strings :D

More importantly, how the feck are you going to play it?

not really that difficult, as you can see in the pic, it's essencialy a 6 string bass but with 2 octave strings for each main string.

I believe the guy that owned the 18-string bass was named Alan Woody. It was more of a gag bass, and it's purpose was to show off how bloody tough graphite necks are. It's essentially a 12-string bass with low B and high C. I don't think there's really a point to that bass other than to say 'ooh, ooh, look how many strings I have!'. The sheer width of the neck would make playing in position very difficult. If you're dying for all those notes, tune a 12-string BEAD. You're not going to be soloing much past the 15th fret anyway.

mike .n
09-04-2007, 02:22 PM
yes that is true. i guess i'll just goahead and build another one.
probably a 5 or 6-string(maybe)

Because they have confidence in their ability to find a use for those strings.

Yeah, I think he just wanted to win a pissing contest, I can't imagine they're that fun to play really.

I think when you get up to the point of having 18-strings, you have a problem, and need to seek professional help right away.

just for fun and i did say that ipassed on the offer

Honestly, I think it would be smarter to get a double neck with one neck bass and the other guitar.

But that's just me...

Whell

I want a 15 string bass! Does that make me a bad person? :(

And I'd tune it to the root, the 1st harmonic(octave), and the 2nd harmonic(13th of the root + 2 cents) of the standard harmonic series.

thefitz
09-04-2007, 07:18 PM
Good luck finding strings for that 2nd harmonic.

I want a 12-string and I'd tune the first thin string to a 5th instead of an octave; instant power chord!

Someday Ill make a triple neck bass.
1)P Pickups
2)Hummy for Slap
3)Fretless, maybe with a sustainer
T'will be epic.

What a waste of time having 18 strings!
Surely any more than 5 or 6 is a complete waste.
Whatever happened to the good old 4 string basses? Everyone seems obsessed now with loads of strings. Keep 4, that's all you'll ever need.

(OK maybe 5, sometimes)

Unless you actually need that many strings (which I can say with confidence you don't) don't waste your money. Buy a sexy six string instead.

Besides, that ridiculous amount of strings makes a bass look stupid.

You have absolutely no idea what the point of a 6+ string is, do you? Much less a 12-string... are 12 string guitars a complete waste, too?

Is the TS talking about an ERB or an multi-octave bass?

NO YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO ONLY PU THROUGH BASS THOUGH A BASS GUITAR EVER PERIOD OCTIVE STRING ARE TOO GUITAR LIKE AND JAZZES ARE TOO GUITAR LIKE GARRR TREBLE AND MIDS ARE EVIL THE BASS IS JUST A GIANT SUBWOOFER FOR THE BAND AND BASS DOESN'T HAVE TONE AND GARRRR

18 strings. i wonder how much a restringing would cost?

1 standard 6 string set. maybe $60?

plus 12 single strings at around 8$ a piece (if you could find it?)

thats approximately $156 per restringing.

give or take on string brand and the price of singles..

i don't know why people get basses that have more than 6 strings

Because basses with sets of octave strings sound wicked. Famous users include Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam and David Ellefson of Megadeth.

Threadstarter, I've played many 12 strings and absolutely loved them. If you want an 18, go for it, but be prepared to take out a second mortgage :p:

EDIT:

And it seems that loadsa people are thinking the TS is talking about an 18 string bass strung

BEADGCFA#D# etc.... he means strung BbbEeeAaaDddGggCcc. They're bloody nice, don't knock them till you try them. They play exactly the same as a normal bass, but you get a nice eastern style ring to them. I really don't understand the hate towards multi stringed instruments.

Cort used to be good for that kind of thing, so did Ken Smith. In fact I think Cort used to list double and triple 4's and 5's as special order items in their catalogue years ago. Sounds like fun tho! Good luck, and keep your osteopath sweet...

18 String bass? Would that be tripling the octaves on a 6 string bass? BEADGC

Never heard of it being done though..

And I thought my 8-string was pushing the limit. I've never seen an 18-string till now, I've seen the 12's though. I say get a 12 that is Bb,Ee,Aa,Dd,Gg,Cc, instead of an 18. But your money your choice you know.

Do they actually make 6x2 12-strings?

Also, I think I read somewhere that it costs about $2000 to restring an 18-string. However, that sounds a bit ridiculous to me.
