Man I love this guy! He has one of the coolest voices ever and his harp playing and songwriting are just as cool. I recently got a double LP set of his greatest hits, and I absolutely love it. His band was always at the top of their game, and they are the epitome of what good, dirty blues is supposed to sound like. Opinions, UGers?

The Wolf voice and harp were damned good, but the driving force of his music was in fact Hubert Sumlin.

I agree. Hubert was a big part of Wolf's music.

it was wolf's 'smokestack lightnin' that put me on the blues trail many years ago. that and john lee hooker's 'dimples' were the first blues songs i ever heard.

Like dr john, it was smokestack lightening that really started my love for blues, luckily it was at the young age of 4, thank god my parents have a decent music collection!

Yeah, Howlin' Wolf is the ****! He's one of the really great blues legends that doesn't get much credit these days. Hubert Sumlin, too, great guitarist (even though Wolf fired him several times :D). You can hear a heavy Howlin' Wolf influence if you listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan, especially his older stuff when he went by Stevie Vaughan.

Evil remains one of my favourite songs of all time, due to Wolf's amazing recording.

Hubert Sumlin is ultra underrated. As far as I'm concerned he is and was one of the best blues guitarist, period.

Thanks guys!!!..Now I have Smokestack Lightnin' in my head.
