i believe, but don't hold me to it, that the white stripes song "catch hell blues" is played this way. incredible sounding and really simple

EDIT: it must be played with a metal slide for full effectiveness.

It's in open A actually but that's a good song anyway. You could play it in Open G.

Not really. Open G tuning forms a G chord open F tuning forms an F chord.

i think a capo on the 2nd fret gets the job done

Man, the Rolling Stones stuff Keith Richards stayed in open G forever, the tele and the twin. Can't You hear me knockin', Honky-Tonk Women, Brown Sugar..... that stuff. IT that's not what you r lookin' for the sorry.

:golfclap:

I didn't think about that. Good point. Although, Open F would be tough to do with a capo ;).

Led Zeppelin - That's the Way
Gallow's Pole off the Jimmy Page, Robert Plant No Quarter album
Four Sticks off that same album
And you can play Travelling Riverside Blues in open G too.
And yes, I'm a bit of a Zep/Page fan. So while you're in alternate tunings why don't you tune to DAGDAD and play some Kashmir too :p:

Bron-Y-Aur Stomp

Yep, that one's open G, I've played it more times than I can count. It's also the first song I figured out was actually in an open tuning and took half the night figuring out what notes to tune to. Same for That's the Way. Friends is the one that's in a different tuning. In My Time of Dying is in open G too.

Gallows pole is standard tuning, unless I've been playing it wrong for 30 years...

Clapton...Rollin and Tumblin from Crossroads and Unplugged works fine in open G, he may have done it in open D though, I'm not sure. Motherless Children is a great song, I don't have a copy but have always tinkered with it in open G, that works well too.

George Thorogood - Bad to the Bone, probably others
Doobie Brothers - South City Midnight Lady
Peter Frampton - Penny For Your Thoughts

I hope you're into slide, a lot of these use plenty of it...

pretty sure all open tunings are the same

Not even close. Each tunes to a certain chord, and you can use major or minor chords as well. They sound different and play different in a lot of cases. Open G is nothing at all like playing open D. David Gilmour uses a minor chord a lot, and I think it's E B E G B E for One of These Days. That's a very interesting tuning to fiddle with, and if you can figure out the minor tuning he uses it gets some great sounds. I found it once and can't remember the exact tuning, but it seems like it's a D or E minor. I'll try to look it up again later when I have some time.

I just watched the video again and you're right it seems he just tuned the guitar down a tone to play it in G. But it is possible to play it in open G, cause I have been =P Same can be said for Nobody's Fault But Mine (No Quarter version that is).

And don't forget to just mess around in the tuning too, especially with the blues stuff.

I checked last night, Clapton did Rollin and Tumblin in open G. Did someone mention Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones? He used open tunings a lot, especially open G. Honky Tonk Women is a great example. Sorry, don't have time to re-read right now, I'm off to work in a few minutes.

Also I just read somewhere that Bron Y Aur Stomp was in open F, I'll have to dig out Zep III and check, I've always played it in open G and it sounds right. Page always liked using different tunings, and I think he tuned down a full step sometimes, which would account for Gallows Pole being in G. Maybe Plant's voice wasn't in top form that night and they all tuned down to accommodate? A lot of the time with older songs it's hard to tell, because the tape machines ran at different speeds, and they would also slow the tapes down or speed them up to get a slightly different overall sound too. It used to drive me crazy constantly retuning to learn songs...

The live version of 'THAT'S THE WAY' by Led Zeppelin is definitely in DGDBBD or open G tuning. I am not sure if the studio version is as well, it may be but dropped a half or whole step.

We should have a sticky with songs in different tunings. A few more for Open-G are:

Son House - Death Letter
Muddy Waters - I Can't Be Satisfied
Howlin' Wolf - Red Rooster

Its been said before, but Keith Richards is the king of open G. Pick up any stones guitar book, I guarantee you'll find tons of keith richards licks in open G. He even plays some songs in open G nowadays that weren't in the first place (Jumpin Jack Flash comes to mind).
