so you want to learn Major scales? well its easy . Lets Start out with C Major scale since this is a easy scale to know and if you already know it, its a good scale to use as an Example

Here are the tabs to it:

E|----------------------------------
B|-----------------0-1--------------
G|-----------0-2--------------------
D|---0-2-3------------------------
A|-3--------------------------------
E|----------------------------------

now your probably wondering ok i see the tabs, what are the notes?

ok well here are the notes : C, D, E F, G, A, B, C

this is the only one that will keep with all normal notes and no Sharps of Flats

now heres the breakdown of a major:

R= Root Note
W=whole step up
H= Half Step up

R W W H W W W H

now ur probably wondering... What???

ok well lets start this : 1 step up= 1 note. 1 half step up- 1/2 note (b or #)

now lets apply this to the C major Scale

R W W H W W W H
C D E F G A B C

the notes are as followed:

A A# B C C# D D# E F F# g G#

Or

A Bb B C Db D Eb E F Gb G Ab

ok now that being said. lets put a new root note in there. Lets make it the E scale
look how i put the symbols on the bottom

Tabs:

E|-------------------------------------------------
B|-------------------------------------------------
G|-------------------------------------------------
D|---------------------------1---2----------------
A|--------------0---2---4-------------------------
E|-0---2---4--------------------------------------
R W W H W W W H

R=Root Note
H=Half Step
W= Whole step

notes: E F# G# A B C# D# E

you can take any note, and put it into a scale

The box positions are good for beginners, to get their fingers going, etc, but trying to learn all the major scales, all over the neck, that'd just be crazy. I recommend learning the notes on the fretboard, and then learn the formula for the major scale: W W H W W W H, or T T S T T T S, where

W = whole note = 2 frets
H = half note = 1 fret
T = tone = 2 frets
S = semitone = 1 fret

It's too basic, everything has really been covered in this lesson anyway: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/lessons/scales/major_scales_explained.html
