Trivium use Dropped D if I remember correctly, I think they use some standard in the Crusade, but I'm sure they used it a lot in Ascendancy.

My favorite tuning though is standard D =), still low but imo better for shredding ^^;

and if you can't find a song you really like in dropped D, make one yourself! =D

lots of scene music

10-09-2007, 01:15 PM
Most 90's Metal bands, but only a few I would consider good. Soundgarden has some more interesting dropped D riffs. Try Outshined or Slaves and Bulldozers.

10-09-2007, 01:15 PM
Opeth uses it occasionally, Demon of The Fall and The Grand Conjuration come to mind.

10-09-2007, 01:17 PM
a load of metal bands use drop c, which is dropped d except then you turn every string a step down.

10-09-2007, 01:18 PM
Billly Talent use it in all their songs.

10-09-2007, 01:59 PM
Foo Fighters: Low, Everlong, Good Grief, Alone + Easy Target, X-Static. All Paramore songs.

velvet revolver does for "slither".

Most, if not all, Velvet Revolver songs and Billy Talent.

10-09-2007, 03:51 PM
cheers everybody!

i already new slither but that was bout all!

10-14-2007, 12:57 AM
Nearly all Nu-Metal bands and many bands found in the Metalcore forum use Drop-D. Modern Hard Rock bands use Drop-D, i believe as well. It is a very widely used tuning.

10-14-2007, 03:47 PM
eh... spill canvas does on most of their songs. try "polygraph right now". although its easier to just use regular tuning & play chords.

10-14-2007, 04:00 PM
Ax7 use Drop D they rock! SOAD Mezmerize/Hypnotize, Trivium Ember to Inferno, Ascendancy. PANTERA!! I play in drop D all the time even for for songs that are in C because iv'e lost my tuner and its a bugger trying to get it back to standard tuning! some one quote me on that :)

A few of the people here are off. Alice in Chains doesn't use Drop D, but they do use Drop Db in a few songs like We Die Young and Them Bones. The easiest way to tune to that would be to tune to Drop D, and then flatten each string until you have Db Ab Db Gb Bb Eb. System of a Down uses the same tuning on Mesmerize / Hypnotize, but they use "Drop C" on their first three albums, which is C G C F A D. Granted you can play these songs in Drop D, but you won't be playing them "correctly". So if you don't care about having the right tuning and just want to sound somewhat like the songs, you can play them.

But as for songs that really are in Drop D, you can try the following:

Killing in the Name - Rage Against The Machine
Outshined - Soundgarden
Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden
Negative Creep - Nirvana

I could be wrong here, but it sounds like "Down" by Stone Temple Pilots is in Drop D as well, so you could try that.

I Don't Know Anything - Mad Season

I don't know what songs specfically, but Black Label Society, Disturbed, and Creed all use Drop D or Drop Db, so take a look through there. That's my limit though, I'm sure other people who listen to more of the new metal would be able to find more Drop D songs for you.

10-15-2007, 05:57 PM
System Of A Down use drop d

06-14-2008, 07:22 AM

Almost every Creed song. P.O.D. also.

Good song.

09-04-2008, 10:40 PM
Good song.
Damn right.

I found the single a while back, and have been playing it.

Almost worthy of a mention in the Guilty Pleasures thread.

Except I'm not guilty, and still refuse to post in it.

09-04-2008, 11:17 PM
Metallica, Van Halen, and Velvet Revolver in some songs. Tool, alot of nu and alt. metal. Some grunge and alt rock, some punk pop. Alot of metal bands, some hardcore and metalcore bands (though most of them use drop c). A ton of people really.

Even if ignorant people call you "nu" or "mallcore" for using it, don't be afraid to experiment with alternate tunings like drop d. And no, using drop d is not cheating.

07-16-2009, 07:59 AM
Lamb of God uses Dropped-D for every song and Trivium uses mostly Dropped-C but they go to Dropped D occasionally

07-16-2009, 08:02 AM
What you really want to tune to, depending on your style and likes and dislikes, is anything from Dropped B to Dropped A, the heaviest **** on the planet, some bands go so low they just switch to 6-String basses

07-16-2009, 06:37 PM
System of a down
Very nice bands ;)
/Edit, they use Drop D

Iron Disturbia
07-16-2009, 06:46 PM
Tool are the most consistent users of Drop D to my knowledge. All of their songs except for 2 and a half (The half being Parabol which is an "intro" to Parabola which is one of the songs that doesn't use Drop D).

07-17-2009, 07:52 AM
rage against the machine use quite a lot of drop d tuning like in killing in the name and born of a broken man

07-17-2009, 08:10 AM
Lonnie Johnson (almost all of his 30's stuff is in Dropped D)

Blind Willie McTell (on Statesboro Blues)

Tommy Johnson (on Canned Heat Blues and Big Road Blues)

Bob Dylan (on See That My Grave Is Kept Clean, Fixin' To Die, Blowin' In The Wind, Masters of War. Alot of his early stuff.)

Duck Baker (on almost everything)

Those aren't really bands, but I think solo artists should probably count.

Lots O' FX
07-17-2009, 09:28 PM
Since when does SOAD use drop D? Im pretty sure it was drop C on their early stuff and drop C# on their later albums.

10-05-2009, 06:09 AM
Ax7 use Drop D they rock! SOAD Mezmerize/Hypnotize, Trivium Ember to Inferno, Ascendancy. PANTERA!! I play in drop D all the time even for for songs that are in C because iv'e lost my tuner and its a bugger trying to get it back to standard tuning! some one quote me on that :)
Drop D tuning is defenately the best tuning for heavy playing ! Avenged sevenfold and pantera and yeah, all the rest, they are awesome, and one of the reasons for that is their drop D tuning...

10-05-2009, 06:12 AM
Since when does SOAD use drop D? Im pretty sure it was drop C on their early stuff and drop C# on their later albums.
maybe, but if you want to play their songs, it works in drop D too... you can't play along to the CD but thats okei if you have a floyd rose for an example... then its a great deal tuning down or up... ://

10-05-2009, 03:41 PM
Linkin Park, is like a Drop D overload.

10-05-2009, 11:57 PM
Jimmy Eat World has at least a few songs in Drop D Tuning, as does Yellowcard

Toph Rulez D00d
10-07-2009, 01:33 PM
Trivium's first two albums, there new albums are standard and they now use 7 strings a lot. For other bands that consistently use drop D You also have Avenged Sevenfold, Story of the Year, Papa Roach, Lamb of God, The Devil Wears Prada, Senses Fail.

10-08-2009, 08:50 PM
Pantera doesn't use Drop D to my knowledge, unless it's a small few. and Walk is in D Standard, I shan't have any of that Drop D ****. Flyleaf, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and John 5 use Drop D.

The Beatles actually used Drop D on the song "Dear Prudence". Van Halen uses it on "Unchained".

One of the bands that is most responsible/influential for the recent Drop D tuning phase, is King's X (been doing it since the late 80's). They aren't real popular in the mainstream, but tons of musicians (ie. Billy Sheehan, Vernon Reid, Jeff Ament), all comment that King's X as one of their favorite bands.

07-06-2011, 02:31 PM
Jack Johnson's song called No Other Way is drop d.

10-20-2011, 07:50 PM
I like how every time this thread is made, half of the responses are either just wrong, or they mention an artist who only uses it maybe 1 or 2 times...

Some Marilyn Manson albums use the tuning, but not all. I don't know loads of bands that use it, though if racked my brains hard enough i'm sure I'd be able to find a couple more.

There aren't any others coming to mind at the moment though, sorry :(

03-28-2012, 06:11 PM
Death, and the 'M-16' album by Sodom is in Drop D
