Guitarist of The Mars Volta. I've been a huge Volta fan for awhile now, even though it seems they are slowly declining. Anyway, people respect Omar a lot and while I know he has some good stuff, he kinda annoys me. If you ever heard his solo work, especially his "Buffalo" album you'll prolly know what I mean. He'll get a good lil melody going but then somehow always manage to **** it up with random noise and terrible production techniques. Honestly, what do ya'll think of him?

For the people who say "No," can you elaborate a little?

at the drive-in was (and still is) probably my favourite band of all time.

i liked mars volta at first, but then they got a little too out there.
i know he's always used a lot of tension and resolution, which was cool as it kinda gave him his own unique sound, but lately its just gotten silly. the free-jazz stuff is alright for a while but it starts to get a little grating.

i think its interesting to note too that his playing has gotten more atonal and crazy since getting OFF drugs. who would have thunk it?

he treads a very fine line between genius, and someone who is just taking the piss out of us all by playing the atonal mess he sometimes does, but i spose that was gonna happen in some peoples eyes anyway.

whats incredibly atmospheric and moody to one person, could be just a tuneless dirge to another, and vice versa.

like the jams he played with flea and frusciante. i had to skip through about 7 minutes of crap noodling that sounded like he didnt know what he was doing just to get to the really good stuff.

but saying that, he has undoubtedly proved that he obviously has one hell of a groove in him.

At The Drive-In: Amazing.

The Mars Volta: Amazing.

He is probably one of most innovative guitarist out there today.

Can't stand The Mars Volta.
Why?

Why?
Well, for one I can't stand the vocals. I find them extremely annoying. And whenever I put on 'De-Loused in the Comatorium' I just get bored. They're too much, in a way.

I feel the exact same way about Muse. Now I know they are two completely diffrent bands, but it's the same thing. Somehow I just feel that while they're doing all of those super innovative things (that I'm sure are great) they just lose their "catchiness", in lack of better words. They "try too hard".

I like Omar. Unlike some modern guitarists, he comes up with an idea and then expands, expands, expands on it. His songs have interesting structures with the occasional jam like on Frances the Mute plus he likes to experiment with the guitar and i like guitarists who try to be innovative or different. He seems to be a guitarist who you either love or hate.

I like At The Drive-In alot.

Mars Volta is a talented band...but I'm not feeling all the latin influence. Not that At The Drive-In didn't have it, but it seems to run thicker with them.

But I agree. Omar is a very good guitarist...but...All the extra noise can be done with out. They ruined poor Asilos Magdalena. Thus I just play it on my own =]

mmhmm.

While, at times, his improvisation can be questionable as just noise, I still love listening to his works. If anything, I find his "noise" to be inspiring to be more creative in a musical sense. Think outside the box, all that jazz.

Sometimes, however, Omar buries the box and goes on his own little tangents.
And I find that admirable.

This is about all his projects. At The Drive-In, The Mars Volta, and the solo stuff. Those would all be in different forums.

God yes. He's one of my favorite guitarists. I agree that his improv can be a little mediocre sometimes, however at other times it can be absolutely fantastic.
