In Need of Help Writing Guitar Riffs and Such

Hey, i'm a guitar player trying to write progressive songs, but i'm having major problems writing original material, like i have the techniques i need to accomplish the kind of riffs i'd like to write but their just not coming to me. I play music in the vein of Between the buried and me, Protest the hero, The Human abstract, Tool, The Fall of troy, Born of osiris, basically Anything Progressive so i'm just looking to get some input from other guitarists, thanks.

Writing in a minor key seems to help me. Take any minor, and play through like 3-4 different chord progressions, and find the ones you like.

ya definitly play through a bunch of keys, and find your favorites, and write in one of those play a bunch of progressions in chords and powerchords or both untill u find 1 u like then just put a picking pattern over it
