I've gotten this error three times now where I couldn't post something. It took about two minutes before the page started to load and then this error came:

504 Gateway Time-out

What's this?

12-03-2007, 02:30 PM
It usually means one of the servers are down or not working.

Although in this case i don't think that was it, just refreshing the page will fix it, I got it once as well.

Alright, thanks for the quick response.

12-05-2007, 09:03 PM
ive been getting it all the time for a day or 2 now :( gotta reload most tabs and if they work it takes like 15 secs to load

12-06-2007, 10:56 AM
so the tabs are slow like at any time of the day? are they slow right now?

12-06-2007, 10:59 AM
is there any other sections that are slow besides tabs?

The forums are sometimes pretty slow, I've had a few 504s in them the last few days.

IP searches too.

All fine at the moment though.

12-06-2007, 01:58 PM
no i meant firefox tabs, the whole site is slow, usually i would scan down the pit and middle click any interesting threads which opens a new firefox tab, then i read them all. but last night was really bad i had to abandon making posts cuz it was soo slow (and i mean literally minutes, it went to a timeout in most cases) seems okay now though (UK time)

12-06-2007, 02:33 PM
I sometimes get the 504s but I can never be sure if it's UG or my connection.

Just wanted to let you know. :)

12-06-2007, 02:36 PM
ok just to make clear. only forums are slow, the rest of the site is OK. correct?

12-06-2007, 02:38 PM
as far as i can recall yea

12-06-2007, 02:41 PM
ok... that's good to hear, so we don't need to look at the rest of the servers. forums are OK for everyone now correct?

12-06-2007, 02:41 PM
I mean *right now*

12-06-2007, 02:41 PM
yeah, forums to seem a tad slower than usual, Zappp.

12-06-2007, 02:43 PM
yah all seems fine now, all loading within a second or 2

12-06-2007, 02:46 PM

Mine seems to take a bit longer, more like 10 seconds. And it's not my connection because I pinged the bot in the chat and the reply was of 1 second. That means my connection works fine.

EDIT: I'll post back in a while see if anything has changed. :)

[Rincewind PING reply]: 6secs

Ok, it's my connection. Ignore me.

12-06-2007, 03:21 PM
I've also noticed a slow load time for the last 2-3 days now. Even today its a little slower than normal but at least im not getting any timeouts today.

the problem seems to come and go randomly though the day though.

12-06-2007, 03:31 PM
Also, search bar is useless for me since i keep getting that error :( .

12-06-2007, 04:12 PM
Yeah.. I've gotten a few time-outs while browsing the forums.. refreshing fixes it though.

12-06-2007, 08:53 PM
forums are slow for me, the rest of the site is fast atm

12-06-2007, 09:46 PM
keep getting gateway timeouts. thenn cant access teh forum for a few mins at a time :/

12-07-2007, 12:35 PM
ok, so correct me if I'm wrong:

the problem is strictly with UG Forums which are occasionally slow at 6-10pm EST timeframe?

12-07-2007, 12:43 PM
The forums are sometimes pretty slow, I've had a few 504s in them the last few days.

IP searches too.

All fine at the moment though.

When I was doing IP searches they were always slow as fuck...

12-07-2007, 01:57 PM
I got a 504 yesterday in the early hours and it was painfully slow for while. Its only in the forum im finding it, profiles and tabs are ok for me.

I get hit with the slowest speeds around 11-2am London time. But it varies day to day.

12-08-2007, 08:32 AM
there has been some hardware maintanance done last evening... any changes yet? not sure that has helped but who knows ;) let me know if forums were slow again?

searches will be disabled for a couple days until fe figure out how to optimize them.

12-08-2007, 10:04 AM
Yeah I had a few but they're fine now...the forums are great...thanks Zappp

12-08-2007, 12:38 PM
yep the forms seems seem to be working top notch again.

12-08-2007, 12:53 PM
Lookin at the bar with Control Panel and such at the top, somethings missing...

But yep forum seems to be running good!

12-08-2007, 01:27 PM
dammit now i have to search manually fo rhte hotchicks thread.

12-08-2007, 01:34 PM
Forums are loading great now.. I haven't run into any problems.

Thanks. :)

12-08-2007, 04:42 PM
can anybody else confirm that everything is OK now please? :)
it seems OK for us as well

12-08-2007, 04:46 PM
It's good for me at the minute.

12-08-2007, 04:46 PM

12-09-2007, 05:46 AM
things are much slower for us today... hmm :(

12-09-2007, 05:59 AM
It's slow as hell for me again. =/

My connection keeps on timing out. I had to refresh like 5 times to get to this thread lol.

12-09-2007, 06:40 AM
yay... seems to be fixed again

12-09-2007, 06:43 AM
you can't imagine but this time it was a 3rd *different* problem in 2 weeks which has caused the slow response time. some dick tried to DDOS the site.

12-09-2007, 07:02 AM
How about the search?

Its not working and forums are mighty hard to use without it.

12-09-2007, 08:22 AM
we will be fixing it tomorrow

12-09-2007, 08:30 AM
just cuz i'm nosey, what kinda server do u need to run a forum this huge? a big dual core machine?

12-09-2007, 09:17 AM
yes, one for frontent one for backend. but that seems not enough... ;)

12-09-2007, 09:37 AM
yea lol ive never seen a forum that always has like 500 ppl logged in at once before

12-10-2007, 01:10 AM
we will be fixing it tomorrow
So the search will be enabled again tomorrow also?

12-10-2007, 06:10 AM
hopefully it will be enabled very soon

12-10-2007, 09:01 AM
I was moments away from posting asking about how long everything will be until it's all running again, but I see you're all working away like [insert clever metaphor].

12-10-2007, 11:48 AM
I see you're all working away like [insert clever metaphor].

just interested. what do you mean by 'optimising search' and what was wrong with it before you shut it down?
just poking my head into matters which influence my life in no way whatsoever

12-10-2007, 12:28 PM
It's painfully slow just now again. =/
16:25 GMT
Takes about 20-22 seconds to load a page, and I got 6 gateway timeouts trying to enter this thread.

12-10-2007, 12:42 PM
It's not moving so smoothly right now.

I hope it gets fixed soon. :D

12-10-2007, 12:54 PM
probably it was just us doing some tests don't worry. should be OK now again

12-11-2007, 07:55 AM
search function has been enabled so you can use it now. i wrote more details about this situtation in my blog, and i think i will post there another things about behind-the-scenes technical events around UG ;)

12-11-2007, 08:28 AM

Thanks, guys.

12-11-2007, 11:03 AM
yay :)
not sure that would solve the problem with the search (and thus the whole slownessss on forums) if not, we will shut it down for several days more to implement more advanced (complicated) solution.

12-12-2007, 10:15 PM
it is acting up again. i have had 4 gateways tonight. oh well ill sleep and hope it will be better later.

12-12-2007, 10:28 PM
very slow for me too atm

edit: just the forums
edit2: fast again

12-13-2007, 07:00 AM
gotcha. we are thinking about better solutions... in fact Dmitry (medick) has some ideas however they will definitely take at least a week or two to implement. we might decide to disable search again for that time if situation becomes very bad.

12-13-2007, 11:36 PM
things are fast tonight... will searchy be disabled forever?

12-14-2007, 06:14 AM
things are fast tonight... will searchy be disabled forever?
we are working on that

12-14-2007, 06:21 AM
what exactly is the problem with the search? is it exceeding ur memory allowance for php? or is the massive number of stuff to search just killing ur sql server? you could always just put a maximum search of now - 2 months back?

12-14-2007, 10:52 AM
to all: please let me know if it still slow for you

12-14-2007, 12:36 PM
Well i just got a few of these. I dont know if its the site of my browser but here it is anyway.

Fatal error: Call to a member function query() on a non-object in /home/u_guitarcom/ on line 869

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in /home/u_guitarcom/ on line 766

Dunno if this means anything. Its not slow, but these keep appearing. Had 5 now!

12-14-2007, 12:38 PM
i'm working on some forum's code changes now
