Your missing one. Sure, thise are the classic guitar "heroes", but as for technicality and plain talent, I'd have to go with Synyster Gates.

Lol Zakk Wylde, Eric Clapton, Alexi Laiho... neither of them made the cut?

This post is ridiculous, there is no such thing as a best guitarist due to vast differences in playing styles, nub.

I would have to say there is no such thing so my answer would be no one!

There is not 1 guitarist out there who is so distinct and diverse and technical that he separates himself from all the other players.

I see a lot of ppl naming Satch for example. There are tons of ppl out there doin the exact same thing as Satch except they dont have the mainstream recognition that he does.

What im basically saying is there is not 1 guitarist out there who i consider the best ever...

This doesn't really work cause if you've got one person saying Dimebag is number one but someone else doesn't like Pantera, then that person will disagree. The only way it would work is if every single person had the exact same style and then all it came down to was technical stuff and speed. Personally my list would be
1. Eric Clapton
2. Jimmy Page
3. Jimi Hendrix
4. Stevie Ray Vaughn
5. Joe Perry
6. John Frusciante
7. Zakk Wylde
8. Dimebag Darrell
9. Slash
10. Eric Johnson

^ Some one was right when he said that no one will ever agree on this. It's just true. We all have our own preferences and music is subjective. There's no way we could say 'best'. These guitarists are in my top 'teir' - meaning I love the music they create and feel as if they have all completely mastered the instrument. In no particular order:

David Gilmour
Mark Knopfler
Eric Clapton
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Warren Haynes
Duane Allman
Buddy Guy
Santana
Eric Johnson
Jimi Hendrix
Jimmy Page
BB King
John Frusciante
Jack White
Joe Bonamassa
Jerry Garcia
Derek Trucks

Obviously some people will disagree, but that is my top tier.

12-06-2007, 01:00 PM
01. Buckethead
02. John Petrucci
03. Joe Satriani
04. Steve Vai
05. Jeff Beck
06. Stevie Ray Vaughan
07. Eric Johnson
08. Jason Becker
09. David Gilmour
10. Duane Allman or Randy Rhoads 0r Frank Zappa or Jimi Hendrix

An overrated guitarists thread would be better. Eric Clapton springs to mind, as do Yngwie Malmsteen, Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page, who are all great, but overrated imo.

Underrated guitarists - Jeff Beck, Duane Allman, Frank Zappa, Marty Friedman (who was just as good as Jason Becker in Cacophony and was awesome in Megadeth) and if I were to choose one more, Buckethead, who is my all-time fave guitarist. I also think that Michael Romeo never gets enough regocnition, and he could easily wipe the floor with most guitarists *cough Yngwie *cough.

best guitarists ever? I hope u r kidding..

MrJayremmie

^ In all honesty, "best guitar player ever" is all opinion, and usually consists of the players favorite guitarist, because "best" is such a interchangeable word. Different people have different standards that which they measure "best" upon.

If we are talkin' about best technical guitarist though, then it leans more towards facts than opinions.

That is just my take.

dumbest question ever.

In my opinion it would be Morello or Buckethead or someone who has expanded on everyone else's techniques to create their own hybrid of awesomeness.

Firstly I agree with people saying that you can't distinguish THE best guitarist ever. Its natural for any guitarist to go down any given line and thrive down that route, whether its's going for super speed arpeggios like Yngwie to the the more melodic Frusciante. No guitarist can ever hope to become THE BEST ever because to do that he/she would have to be the best at EVERY aspect of guitar, which is just impossible.

I also agree with Megalomaniac in saying that THE best guitarist would have to be original in some aspect in change the guitaring world in some sort of way.

Also I don't think anyone has even considered many acoustic guitarists here. Im not saying he is the best ever, because that would be naive and argumentative, but has anyone listened to Andy Mckee? He is an acoustic fingerstyle guitarist that makes technical sound like a dream. For anyone looking for a challenging tab I recommend looking up his "Art of Motion" or "Rylynn". But seriously someone delete this thread!

yeah i know i posted but i agree with u. Im sick of people saying Hendrix is the best. he is only the best because he was the first guitarist to use distortion.and did anybody consider acoustic guitarists i did but i didnt put it down :(

1. No Greatest/Best/versus threads.
2. This topic is too common. think of something better to post.
3. "Greatest" is too general. Specify it.
4. For 3, don't pick most:
-creative
-fastest
-influential
-overrated
-underrated
because they've been done.
5. being "overrated" is matter of popularity. he's popular cuz he's good. therefore, he gets rated better than others. music is show business now. not the best in terms of skills get all the attention. look at modern bands now days.

yes. the guy who reported is right. but i'm still wondering if he really did report this thread...

This thread is still open?

The question: "Who is the best 'Guitar Player' EVER?"

This is a question of technicality and skill. Not about musicianship, soul, riffwriting, or anything like that. Just the ability to play guitar.

My vote goes to either Michael Angelo Batio or Django Reinhardt. Both of them can rock the guitar whilst sleeping. Honorable mention goes to Jason Becker. He was a wicked guitarist, both in terms of raw ability and musically.

afromonkeyR0X
12-18-2007, 04:11 AM
I'd have to say Sam Totman or Herman Li. They play insanely fast! Slash is awesome, Tom Morello's ok but I think Herman and Sam are the best.

Brandon Lee
12-23-2007, 10:56 PM
oK so nobody here is gonig to even mention Kirk Hammet, In my opoin its a tie beetween Kirk and Jimmy Page, then it would be Jimi Hendrix, then Joe Satriani, and another awsome guitarist is Slash.

MaXiMuse

Well, I think Tom Morello with no doubt. He isn`t the fastest guitar player but he takes guitar to the next level. He imitates a helicopter in Cochise, can make monkeys laugh in Original Fire, can do a Kolibri (that small little bird wich wings are very fast) in Out of Exile. His riff`s are not always the best. Matthew Bellamy`s riffs are better in that way, but I haven`t seen him shred like Van Halen or Kirk Hammet or Tom Morello. Herman Li plays extremely fast and can imitate a elephant or a motorbike so he also makes a chance.
