Mark Twain is my favorite author.

I love the wit in his writing. He also has some of my favorite quotes of all time which I feel compelled to share with you all:

“It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt." - Mark Twain

"Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society." - Mark Twain

"Education: that which reveals to the wise, and conceals from the stupid, the vast limits of their knowledge." - Mark Twain

"If you tell the truth you don't have to remember anything." - Mark Twain

^ That really does sound cool, is it a bunch of short stories? Or just writings?

Its a short story, about Lucifer, its a good read for an atheist, because it makes a mockery of organized religion :p:

It basically asks the question, how the hell do humans know about god? or what he does? or what he wants?

I think the funniest thing I read was this:

"Man is a marvelous curiosity. When he is at his very, very best he is a sort of low grade nickel-plated angel; at his worst he is unspeakable, unimaginable; and first and last and all the time he is a sarcasm."

it's all the funnier coming from Satan himself :haha

I had to find that quote in wikipedia though lol

Just got Number of the Beast recently. Unfortunately, most of the other tracks don't seem to be as amazingly epic as Run to the Hills. :(

On a side note, I'm going to see a band tonight that has covered numerous King Crimson tunes (and has a chapman stick!) so I expect a reasonably entertaining experience.

No, it's a band that isn't known at all, since they're all in school. They generally do latin or jazzy grooving with some experimental elements mixed in, and they're pretty tight, so it was a fun show.

Ah, a mini pit. a scary thought.

So, here's a question.

Say the Founding Fathers of America formed a rock band. Who would be in it? who would play what? who'd do the songwriting? Would they suck?

I mean, come on, that's as classic as you get. ;)

zeppelinpage4
01-31-2008, 02:17 AM
^ :haha cavemen hitting rocks together is probably where the real classics are. :p:
As far as founding fathers, Jefferson seems like a guitar player. Washington would definately be frontman, his wooden teeth might make for some interesting vocals.

Two cowboys and Chuck Norris were sitting around a campfire out on the lonesome prairie. A night of their tall tales begins. The first cowboy says, "I'm the meanest, toughest cowboy there is. Why, just the other day, a bull got loose in the corral and gored six men before I wrestled it to the ground, by the horns, with my bare hands." The second cowboy can't stand to be outdone. "Why that's nothing. I was walking down the trail yesterday and a fifteen foot rattler slid out from under a rock and made a move for me. I grabbed that snake with my bare hands, bit its head off, and sucked the poison down in one gulp." Chuck Norris remained silent, ......slowly stirring the coals with his penis

Juno is alright. Really thought I would enjoy it more, but it's still a good film. No Country For Old Men on the other hand is one of the best films out yet this year. The Coen brothers are wonderful directors.

I watched Thank You For Smoking the other day. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it to you. The satire is classic, particularly for a Hollywood film. Never thought I'd see that from any mainstream directors in the US. Reitman still could have done better with Juno though.

Like the soldier leader said, it's 'just people killing people', and I thought it had great themes. The whole Infection was just people's mistakes. The message and themes aren't too hard to find, but I thought they were good.

I thought the ending was terrible though. Totally didn't go with the themes. It could've been so much better

Whatever movie you guys watch avoid Meet The Spartans by any means. I knew it would be bad from the first preview, however some friends went to see it and I had nothing better to do so thought eh why not expecting a bad but tolerable movie and a way to kill some time.

I wanted to leave in the middle of the thing, no story or plot. Horrible attempts and jokes and it ruined a great movie but not in a funny way. In fact this is probably the WORST movie I have ever seen in the last decade.

"There Will Be Blood" seems like a good movie, one of the teachers is trying to organize a small class trip to see it which is cool.

Also, when speaking of comedies, I thought the entire Austin Powers trilogy was brilliant, as was Meet the Parents, or anything else Jay Roach does.

Harmonica was the first instrument I had as a kid. Everybody had them back then, used to call them 'mouth organs'. I'm an alright harmonica player. I usually just play in my blues band or when I play Neil Young/Bob Dylan tunes but hey that satisfies me!

Accckkkkk. I've lost all my music.

I have almost everything on cds, but they are conveniently located not here. Bahhhhh. Oh man do I know that feeling all too well. I've lost an external drive with all my studio CDs and bootlegs, then after that I lost my entire computer, which contained twice the amount of studio CDs on it that were on the hard drive I lost. Then just last night my username decided to stop working on my computer which I completely rebooted like, 2 months ago (no music lost this time, my name works on safe mode, so I'm transferring the music that was on there onto my hard drives in safe mode).

The moral of the story is: BACK UP YOUR MUSIC TO DISCS/EXTRA HARD DRIVES. Since it's absolutely ridiculous to think that I'm going to burn every single show I have to listenable audio discs, I just back my bootlegs up to DVD RWs. I have probably 30+ DVDs of bootleg data, and 5 or 6 DVDs of studio CDs.

Putting them on the backup drive isn't enough temporarily, huh?

Here's a question; You've already got so many bootlegs. Why keep collecting? You've got so many shows from the same tour (I think you have all the available shows from the Animals tour?). How often do you actually listen to most of these?

How often do you actually listen to most of these? I don't have a drive strictly for backup. My shows go straight to my external hard drive, and then slowly onto backup discs. And why keep collecting you say? Well first of all, I always have something new and different to listen to. When it comes to things like Floyd tours, as Cptbeefheart said, each show has it's own little differences (except for Roger Waters' recent solo tours ;) ). And I actually do listen to a lot of my shows. Not necessarily Pink Floyd all the time, but I constantly have music playing, so I do get to listen to a nice portion of what I have. The most fun is listening to the Black Crowes stuff I have, they've got a ton of setlist variety from night to night, so you get a completely different show each time. Number two would be Frank Zappa, simply because you never knew what could happen at one of his shows.

Lately I've been listening to studio music though. I just loaded everything from my second external drive (the one with all the studio stuff on it) into Windows Media Player, so I'm rediscovering some albums I haven't heard in a long time. Joe Walsh's Barnstorm is playing right now, which I have to say, is a great album

The big three are The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, Amorica, and Three Snakes and One Charm. All three are fantastic albums, but I'd go with Southern Harmony and Amorica first, Three Snakes is a little more experimental. If you like straight up simple rock and roll, their debut- Shake Your Money Maker -would also be a good start, but I feel their sound really evolved between that and Southern Harmony.

Also, remember that DC++ hub I was talking about? I said I might get one started? It appears as if I have done so. I'm testing it out to see if I can actually run this thing.

Oh my :haha.

I'd like to talk about literature. I'm actually thinking of PM'ing a mod to make an only literature/books thread in The Pit. But The Pit would probably explode if we did that.

So, favorite/least favorite books?

My favorite book is Fight Club, as is Chuck Palahniuk my favorite author. The guy is brilliant.

Also, I recently attempted to read Heart of Darkness, since I've heard good things (and it's what Apocalypse Now was based on) and I have to say it was MIND NUMBINGLY boring. I don't even want to talk about it.

Cptbeefheart
02-26-2008, 10:19 PM
I have a myriad of favorite books, but my top three are probably The Stand by Stephen King, Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut, and No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy.

What a coincidence, I am reading Heart of Darkness now as well. I, however, really enjoy it. It isn't your normal, jump out and grab you with an interesting story. It is more a psychological work, one that plunges into the depths of the human mind and examines the dark corners of it. I find it to be a interesting, yet challenging read.

It is more a psychological work, one that plunges into the depths of the human mind and examines the dark corners of it. I find it to be a interesting, yet challenging read.

Marlow kept telling us about how great of a character this Kurtz fellow is, but he isn't introduced for a long time. I wished I had read more, since I didn't even make it to where Kurtz was introduced. The first 75 pages was just pointless drivel about the countryside and ivory. I figured it wasn't worth my time and dead brain cells.

Stephen King used to be once of my favorite authors. I'm into more now. Right now I'm reading The Dark Tower V, which is just such a great series. My favorite King book is probably Thinner. Scratch that, it's 1408.

1408 is just such a great psychological horror, it's the only story I've ever read to have actually frightened me. It scared the crap out of me! Everyone should read it.

I have Slaughterhouse Five on reserve at the library, so it's up next, along with The Great Gatsby, which I've heard mixed opinions about.

Cptbeefheart
02-26-2008, 11:26 PM
I'm kinda the same way with Stephen King. He was probably the first author I really got into and since then, I have kind of moved on. I still read his new books but I wouldn't call him one of my favorite authors anymore. I think he is more of a introductory author, like AC/DC is an introductory classic rock band. He starts you off with a solid base and then you move on from there.

I think I've said before that I dislike Gatsby. I don't think its the classic that everyone makes it out to be. Sure, the story is interesting. But the book is rife with unneeded symbols and is downright boring in spots. It definitely should be read though, just to see what you think about it.

and No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy.

I would've liked to have read it before I saw the movie, but it's too late now. Excellent movie, however. Any other McCarthy recommendations that are as quality as "No Country..."?

I'm (STILL) reading Joseph Wambaugh's "The Onion Field". It's a lot like "In Cold Blood".

I'm a bit on the fence with Stephen King. I read a bunch of his books back in middle school, and some were very good, while others were just alright. For instance, The Shining was great, as was Pet Sematary, Thinner was good, and looking back on Cujo, I originally liked it, but now I think it could have been better from what I remember. That being said, I recently read The Mist (had to do it before the movie- which I still haven't seen -came out), which I liked a lot, and The Green Mile, which I can conclude is one of the best books I have ever read. A bunch of his short stories/novellas are good too- especially Children of the Corn and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.

As for The Great Gatsby, I did not like that book either, and agree that it is not the classic everyone says it is.

I just finished 1984 last week and thought that was great, and now I'm re-reading A Clockwork Orange, which I loved the first time I read it.

1408 is just such a great psychological horror, it's the only story I've ever read to have actually frightened me. It scared the crap out of me! Everyone should read it. I just saw that movie not too long ago, it was entertaining. I have the Everything's Eventual book with that story in it, so one of these days I'll get around to reading that.

Slaughterhouse Five is a phenomenal book, but I think it overshadows some of Vonnegut's other work (Breakfast of Champions, Mother Night, and Jailbird), which is potentially better.

My favorite book is Animal Farm... before you jump to conclusions, it was even before I liked Floyd! :p: A Lesson Before Dying and Brave New World come to mind, also.

As for Heart Of Darkness, I'm a senior in High School and my AP English class just finished it. I have a lot of respect for Conrad, he's phenomenal with words (and English isn't his first language!), but it was the most tedious book I've ever read. It seems way overly complicated to me, but it's full of good ideas and points. I guess it's a good idea that's just boring for me. The good thing is that with that book done, everything else we do in AP will be easy! :D

I've only read one Vonnegut book- Cat's Cradle. In my Freshman English class we did a lot of silent reading, if we didn't have a book the teacher would just hand us something to read. He gave me Cat's Cradle. It was at the same time we read Animal Farm. My Dad kept going on and on about how there was a reason he gave me Cat's Cradle and that he wanted me to compare them or something. I just kept telling my Dad "He just handed me a book at random... you've never read Cat's Cradle or you'd understand that this was NOT his intention!". I couldn't stand it. Of course I was a Freshman, and don't really remember much of the book except for the repeated mentioning of Hoosiers and the favorite insult being "pissant". Maybe I need to give it another shot, but it's not too high on my list of books to read right now...

I thought 1984 was very good, with the exception of like, 30 pages in the middle of it. The whole section where Winston gets Goldstein's book and just sits there and reads two and a half chapters I felt just restated things you already know.

I enjoy 1984 very much, I've read it about 4 times now and it stands up on every reread. The fact that Orwell predicted so much about the world of today back in the '40s is astounding. It does have its dry spots but overall, I think its a very important work.

Animal Farm is alright, it just never connected with me the way 1984 did.

I just saw that movie not too long ago, it was entertaining. I have the Everything's Eventual book with that story in it, so one of these days I'll get around to reading that.

I would highly recommend it. Read it, right now :p:. It's a short, easy read and it'll scare the pants off you. I haven't seen the movie, but a girl in my Grade 8 class was a big King fan and went to see the movie, and said that it couldn't hold a candle to the book. They changed a lot of things. The way you can get into the main character's head and the horror he experiences is awesome.

I just finished 1984 last week and thought that was great, and now I'm re-reading A Clockwork Orange, which I loved the first time I read it.

You just finished 1984? :p:. That book is amazing.

While the part where Winston reads Goldstein's book can be dull, I feel it's necessary to prepare you for the awesomeness that is the rest of the book. The action and resolution of everything in the final few chapters has always blown me away, and I think the little break to look at everything we know again was needed.

Animal Farm is very good. It's a short read, which is great for re-reading it. The symbolism and messages are quite easy to grasp though, and once you 'get' it, I find the only reason to re-read it is for literary merit. Or if you particularly want to.

While I'm not a big fan of fantasy, I've got to say the The Dark Tower series by Stephen King is one of the best crafted works of fiction I've ever read. The entire series is extremely gripping from the first page, and it's difficult to put the book down. Has anyone else read part/all of the series?

Well of course there was a ton of excess and blunt type storytelling, but if you're going to tell a story about Morrison/The Doors, you've got to include the positive and negative, while it did put a little too much emphasis on the latter.

However, I thought it was a great look at the sixties scene and the story of one of my favorite bands. Val Kilmer is great in it.
