So I'm just now getting into this guy, I picked up songlines yesterday. Amazing. His music is a breath of fresh air, the way it combines soul, blues, and latin elements all into one. And the way he plays that slide guitar is something else. What an amazing artist. What are you guy's opinions of him? He is probably my favorite modern guitar player now.

Amazing guitarist, I love how delicately he will shift into semitones to make his guitar literally sound like it's singing. I also love the exploration or different genres, I love Sahib Teri Bandi/Maki Mandi from songlines, beautiful eastern inspired music.

I have respect beyond his music too, he is quiet, humble and he never resorts to gimmicks to get respect

Derek is Mega awesome, lol

Derek is reviving blues and jazz. I love his playing, it's soulful and bluesy and just full of life and originality. I saw them on their latest tour, acctually it was on new years eve, and was a fantastic show. They rocked for probably 3 or 4 hours with the North Mississippi Allstars.

I think with the addition of Susan, his wife, they are trying to go in a more mainstream direction. Her voice just appeals to me more than Mike Mattison's, and it seems like would appeal to the "masses" more.

Has anyone noticed that Todd Smallie, the bassist, always has THE creepiest child molester smile on his face, especially on the Songlines DVD. It seems like everytime they cut to a shot of him, he is just overjoyed to be playing.

Oh no he's still out there. But he prolly only sang lead on about a third of the songs they played and sang back up on like 3/4, so he wasnt even out there sometimes. And this is vocal songs not counting instrumentals.

I think Susie puts out when she sings lead, so Derek likes that.

Susan Tedeschi (or Trucks... I guess) is the singer now

I like Matt, I really do, but this is going to make a massive difference in their new material. Susan will hopefully bring some much needed life into the bands songwriting.

I really am envious now. I new that him and Santana were touring, but they weren't playing anywhere near. Me and my friends could only conjecture upon oodles of organic cosmic music that these two guys would unleash on tour.

How was Santana though? He still got it?

I really enjoy Songlines. It's definitely continues the trend of the band's albums evolving in musical diversity and overall songwriting. I would consider Sahib Teri Bandi/Maki Madni my favorite track from the album.

I have personally seen Derek live on three occasions. Thrice with The Allman Brothers Band, during which one of the opening acts was none other than The Derek Trucks Band. Their set lasted about an hour, so it was short of a true concert for them, but full of energy nonetheless. Next time they come by I want to take the opportunity to see them.

meh!
06-21-2008, 01:09 AM
I got two CDs by him, they're both pretty good I think. There's a few tracks where they decide to be 'worldly' that I'm not to hot on. But they've got an element of 70s British prog that I find quite appealing, before prog was all about stupid guitar solos. I also just like the groove on songs like revolution, I'd rather be blind... and i'll find my way. Like the singer a fair bit as well, good rendition of 'I wish I knew how it would feel to be free''.

Ya Derek Trucks is amazing and i love his playing. Him and his band are all about the blues and i saw somewhere that they stretch over like 4 generations. Like Trucks is in his 20s, 2 of the members are in there 30s, 40s, 50s and so on.

It just doesn't happen. 3-4 years ago, I have found myself falling off to sleep to everything from Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and the Doors, to Iron Maiden, Yngwie Malmsteen and Pantera (**** that's how I started learning Yngwie songs :D).

however, I can't fall off to sleep "listening" to music anymore. 'cos that's the handle I guess, NOW I really "listen" to the music, rather than just hearing the sounds. And listening is essentially an interactive process. I mean I have trouble falling off to sleep to a record as serene, hypnotic, and quiet as Keith Jarrett's "Dark Intervals" (well unless I'm bombed tha the **** outta my skull!).

AND I just realized I have about 6 Derek Trucks albums (4 live albums :D), but I don't have "Songlines"!

guess it speaks for an evolving listening ability.

slidething31

^I mean if I'm tired enough I can fall asleep with music on, but generall I agree with you. If I want to fall asleep, I don't put music on. Although sometimes I will listen to a song or two just to calm my mind before I go to sleep.

I don't own it, but really everything I've ever heard by Trucks is awesome. You won't regret buying any of his albums.

Joyful Noise was the first Derek Trucks Band album that I owned. You can't help but embrace the rich mixture of musical diversity, and you must certainly admire that every musician in the band is able to adapt to each style so well.

Oddly enough, though, the negative reviews I have read about this album criticize the use of various World musical styles.

I could understand such criticism if the band played these styles poorly, but if you've listened to the album before you know that isn't true. :p:

I just saw dereck trucks play at the alman bros show last saturday with bob wier. He was awsome but i like Warren Haynes better probably because im more of a picker than slide player but it was an awsome ****ing show. Dereck Trucks hands were really fun to watch because his style is so drastically different from mine.

I was inspired to buy a slide and try to learn some slide stuff. Which finger would you guys recommend pinky or ring? I dont wanna get one untill i know which is best so i dont change my mind after already practicing.

slidething31
08-23-2008, 12:25 PM
I like tp put it on my ring finger, but some people prefer pinky. There is a slide guitar thread down the page somewhere.

And how was the show? I'm seeing him with the ABB in a month or two.

TheHeartbreaker
08-23-2008, 12:50 PM
I don't play slide often, but when I do I use my ring finger, because it's larger and gives the sensation of more support in the slide.

I also enjoy Derek's picking style a lot. It's unorthodox, but it's very fascinating to watch, and obviously it works very well for him.

Todd's hair on the Songlines dvd is unbelievably shiny. Its like he killed a chic and made a wig from her hair.

Maybe I'm a little late, but did anyone else hear that The Derek Trucks Band has a new album called "Already Free" that's going to be released on January 13th, 2009? I'm really looking forward to that. A news article about it is here (http://www.derektrucks.com/news.html).

^ Yeah I think we talked about it a page or so back... It sucks that it's still almost two months away.

Here's a cool video, kind of behind the scenes stuff.

Yeah, I'm getting the same message. First time that's ever happened to me on YouTube.

I'll help you out here too.

If you want to know what Derek is really about, I would suggest Songlines. Keep in mind though, it isn't sraight blues, there are lots of jazz and world music influences in his playing. You could always wait another month or so for his new album.

On the other hand, if you're into more bluesy playing, you could get the Allman Brothers album Hittin the Note.

Actually, just get them all, and don't skip Soul Serenade. :D

^ Actually the new album is called Already Free. Down in the Flood is a Dylan song that they cover.

I would recommend Joyful Noise and Songlines. There filled with quality songs.

Looks like a converted Trucks fan. He is a virtuoso of slide...

I got Soul Serenade for Christmas, so that's my third album by The Derek Trucks Band. I haven't had a chance to listen to it too much as of yet, but "Elvin" has definitely made it as my favorite song from the album so far.

And I cannot wait for Already Free! It's "So Close, So Far Away." ;)

Soul Serenade is great. Drown In My Own Tears with Greg Allman is one of my favorites.

I just listened to Down In the Flood for the first time and if its any indication of how the rest of the album will be than were all in for one hell of a treat. Im seeing him live as soon as i get the chance.

meh!

Is there a new album by them out soon or something? Probably get it if there is.

i've got songlines and (that other one... em.. out of madness? or something) the one with the pyramid. Liked both of them, fun and proggy, so i'll pick up a new one if there is one.
