There aren't any.... thats kinda a huge part of punk. I mean... Dead Kennedy's had some jazz influence I guess and there are some others like that but punk its stripped music, its not full of virtuosos and the like.

See, Punk was a social response to everything that was going on in music and society at the time of it's conception. Punk replaced complex stuff by making very fast/bare bones music that delivered its point quickly. My own opinions on punk aside.. you aren't going to find "good" punk bands in the conventional meaning of the word. Punk isn't about being "good" it WAS (keyword: was) a significant social statement.. not a means of expressing musical aptitude.

well, Punk really is just raw music, don't need alot of bull****, just record it and send it out, your not really gonna find anything to complecated in punk. Rancid used alot of keyboard work on their last album, Indestructable, if thats what your looking for...

okay, well maybe not super technical, but punk bands that can shred. I sort of got onto this train of thought after hearing Dave Baksh from Sum 41. They are punk-ish (ISH!!) and he's a pretty good player.

For the record, Dave Baksch is an extremely pedestrian guitarist, and he's too chocolate to play guitar anyway.

The only punk 'virtuoso' I can think of is some guy who played in manchester in the 70's.

He was a top notch flamenco guitarist, and in between songs he'd turn his back to the audience and fingerpick to piss the audience off.

If punk gets that technical I think it graduates to metal...maybe.

No, no, NO!

He's meedly meedling, but not fast enough to be a virtuoso.

You don't have to play that fast to be a virtuoso. Look at clapton, page, brian may, beck, fripp etc.

Great video, seen it before, but Holmes, dude, TUNE YOUR TOMS. I am now technically a multi-insturmentalist, and since I play percussion as one of those, I can legally tell you what to do drum-wise.

And virtuostiy and punk don't nessecaily mix, although virtuosity doesn't have to mean a good guitarist, so don't think i'm ****ting on the ability of many punk guitarists.

If it's on the radio, it's almost definitely not punk.

There are very few punk bands with "virtuoso" musicians, but there are very few of those in any genre. Here goes:

Bad Brains
Propagandhi
The Martyr Index
Minutemen

Those are the only ones I know of with "virtuosic" musicans. Chances are you didn't really mean the word literally, though.

I don't know about virtuoso punk, but some of the more experienced bands would be Dead Kennedys and Bad Brains (especially Banned in DC), umm Black Flag had some more tech-minded riffs and **** like that, Minutemen were all amazing players too. But, punks not really about how well you play, it's about energy and ideas. it's not against the "rules" though.

Last time I checked, virtuosity was complete speed and melodic control over your instrument. Meaning you can play hella fast and it sounds good, and play two notes and it sounds good.
