So I thought maybe it would be a good idea to do one of these like in the other, bigger sub forums. If it is illegal/not a good idea, just tell me and I'll delete it.

So I guess we can talk about whatever we want in here, and maybe this will help give this smaller subforum a stronger sense of community and maybe even help bring in some new regulars.

why for?
:haha Long story, the people at Facebook disabled my Facebook account that had some pretty important information on it that I needed such as school work and phone numbers. They thought that I was too young to use Facebook.... I guess I probably made a mistake when I registered with my birth date... but yeah. Now I can't get the info that I kept on there. I've sent a couple messages but they all seem to be bots or at least a really stubborn person. They keep saying 'This decision is final' and they don't even seem to answer my questions or help me at all. I had some info regarding plans for tonight and that movie that I was telling you about that I was going to see with that chick... and guess what, I can't get her phone number right now because she gave it to me via Facebook and I never put it in my phone :haha Not to mention I was in the middle of a couple conversations when my account got shut down :haha

I guess it's not that big of a deal but it just pisses me off about how stupid the people that work there seem to be and they haven't helped me one bit, when they are Customer Service...

I'm just curious if any of you like the grateful dead? they're probably my favorite band and I just can't get enough of the way they blend blues, jazz, rock and psychedelia.

if any of you want to hear a version of hard to handle that will make you forget the black crowes ever did it, check this track out! the groove the band gets into towards the end blows my mind every time.

Yeah, but I thought that if you don't mute behind, then you can get unwanted buzz and noise from the strings behind the slide. That's just what I've heard. I'm horrible at slide though

02-22-2008, 04:41 PM
Well, I use my 3rd finger, or pinky.
Mostly pinky now. I am getting far more control than at first. I used to use my first but I slowly found that I had very little control. Third finger is best for control, however if you want to incorporate bends and stuff into your playing, you kinda need to have it on your pinky.

I am the torrent expert :haha

Right click on the torrent that you downloaded. Click on 'Open Containing Folder...' Once you have the files open in Windows Explorer highlight them all by pressing Ctl+A or you can manually highlight them all by holding down the shift key or Ctl key. Then drag and drop the files into your iTunes.

Good choice! Blues + Jazz = Best forum ever :haha

But that song is sweet too, I prefer the Cream version but Jimi's is pretty sick too. That Jimi album, 'Blues', is amazing though.

The Blues Hendrix Album is fucking amazing, I love every track on there!

But yeah, cool story (sort of): I was playing guitar with my brother and I started doing some of that psychadelic shit, inspired by that "Third Stone From The Sun" SRV El Mocambo video that I saw (don't worry, I didn't go as far as he did, I would never do that to my guitar), and the high E snapped and cut me in the hand and I started bleeding. It was pretty badass.

I actually did that once. Trying to sound like the 'Whole Lotta Love' part where it goes all crazy. Or the 'A Day In The Life' part where they do that.
I made my delay go so that it never really stopped echoing for like 20 or so seconds and was screwing around with my slide and trem. It was actually pretty sweet, it sounded very dark.

So i have a question. When y'alls play blues, how do you set your amps and effects?

Carswell98
02-24-2008, 11:22 PM
i see you use a Valvetronix like myself, try this out:

Black 2x12 amp model

Gain full on

Treb full on

Mid 80%

bass 60%

Reverb 11 o'clock

neck pup

I love the tone I get from mine with those settings

Jimmy94

I almost always play with a completely clean tone... gain at 2 or 3 and master cranked, everything else set to make the guitar sparkle

Funny thing is that i use that setting a lot with my fender. (With my Valvetronix amp)

Usually, tho i use the AC30TB with 75% mid, full treb and about 60% bass with my Ibanez on the bridge pup. I also use full reverb or full compressor, but with the reverb I usually shorten the decay interval so it dies a little quicker, but still has that full sound.

I've been digging my tone recently, really grungy lo-fi influences.

Equip:
Fender Blues Jr.
Squier Strat, modded with GFS Humbuckers (http://i27.tinypic.com/21u6jb.jpg)
Mids 12 o clock ish (6-7 ish)
Treble high (9-12 depending on the day)
Bass low (4-5)
Volume Full
Master to balance levels

gives me a nasty kick you in the face tone, its awesome

Ooh an off-topic thread.. Our little forum is getting quite fancy these days.

I've been playing loads of acoustic lately covering things like Hoochie Coochie Man and Let's Work Together and basic blues stuff trying to focus on my singing. I'm trying to build my way up to be able to cover John Lee Hooker songs but I find the 1chord shuffle and weird free-form singing impossibly hard to do.. Anyone here done any good JLH covers?

Telecaster > Amp... Sometimes a tuner pedal in the middle..

I use channel 2 of my Laney with vol and gain at 12 o'clock.. Bass = 3 o'clock ... Mids = max ... Treble = 2 o'clock .. With the bright switch on. And usually a touch of reverb like about 2/10..

Seems to work good for me, the quieter I practice though I just turn the gain up a bit more and if I play louder I turn it back down and leave the volume up higher.

If I'm playing slide I usually play pretty clean to let the notes sound a bit clearer.

02-26-2008, 08:14 AM
Checking out some of his videos, and making assumptions that, I don't think he'd have very fancy gear.. They just look like small Fender combos to me in the videos I watched, probably blackface or something but they're just plain black squares with silver-y grill cloth.

Anyone seen the videos of The Doors doing Crawling Kingsnake? I LOVE The Doors and Jim Morrison but it's a pretty weak effort.. I suppose Jim was pretty fukced up at that point in time though..

Hey, i've got a question. I'm starting to be somewhat of a tone freak. I'm talking Eric Johnson levels of tone-freakishness. maybe i should get it checked out...

But anyway, i'm using a VOX AC15 right now, and i can get all kinds of great tones at lower volumes (really amazing amp overall by the way), but it has no midrange control, and so when i crank it up, and get a little natural tube distortion, the mids sound so horribly scooped. where can i get a mid boost? i've never seen a pedal for that sort of thing, if there are any other means by which you guys can get some more midrange, let me hear it

thanks!

Most likely. Have you heard the recording of Peace Frog when he totally misses the note when he sings "Blood" ? Just sounds off.

Anyway, seeing as this is the off topic thread, ill enlighten you all with my story of why the UK government thinks that i am an illegal immigrant.

In january, you have to send the inland revenue department your tax return form. Last summer, i spent a month or so in Barcelona, so i didn't work between july 10th and september 20th, and i had to state why i wasn't working, so i simply put that i was abroad. So today, i received a letter from the inland revenue with a UK immigration application form.

For those of you that don't know me well, i am english, always have been, and until i emigrate to somewhere nicer, will continue to be english!

What made it stranger is that on the form, they entered my national insurance number for me and my passport number (2 sure signs that i am a british national!!). The form made me laugh because im tempted to fill it in, instead of do the british thing and complain complain complain until everyone knows about it! Some of the questions are "what are your intentions in the UK?", "Why do you want to live in the UK?" and "What contribution will you make to British society?"

Thats Gordon Brown's government for you!

The pitch of the vocal harmonies was a little awkward, like it shifted in and out. The guitar work was perfect for a VU cover, and I like that song, there was just something minute in the vocals that threw me off a little bit. I am no expert though, so make of that what you will.

you know, I just listened to it again and I think I hear what you're talking about... I think I put too much vibrato on some of the notes that got held on longer, especially for the lower harmony. Is that what you're hearing?

It was in the lower harmony. But like I said its minute, right at the beginning of a new line. I think it might be that you force a little bit too much air out after you take a breath and then you level the pitch back out. And the vibrato is good, and if it goes out of phase a little, its hardly noticeable.

I hope that made sense.

there are a few musicians there, one was actually the bassist for a band that had 15 minutes of fame, but his head is do far up his own ass he is the most condescending jerk I've ever seen, another is a youngin' that likes to think he is Vai or something and picks odd, distasteful chromatic licks all over the place.

Hypnotoad

And I just got back from doing my weekly blues/blues rock live and rarities radio show for my college's radio station. Hendrix show tonight, kicked ass, here's the playlist cause I'm bored

Star Spangled Banner - Woodstock
Machine Gun - Band of Gypsys
Catfish Blues - BBC Sessions
Hear My Train a Comin' - Martin Scorscese Presents
Purple Haze - BBC Sessions
Hey Joe - Monterey Pop
Little Wing [Live] - Experience Box Set
Voodoo Child [Live] - Experience Box Set
All Along the Watchtower [Live] - Experience Box Set (I wish I knew the concerts these came from :\)
Killing Floor - Monterey Pop
Slow Blues - Experience Box Set (one of hendrix's last recordings, brilliant jam)

Was a lot of fun, only managed to mess up twice (co-host said Buddy Guy played drums on Machine Gun when he meant to say Buddy Miles, and we played catfish/train out of order, but nothing too major)

@sre- I think that the Box Set lives are either Winterland or Paris.

@Jimmy- is there a place to find where stuff like that would be happening, or should I just use google? And i have no idea where that toad is from.

@carswell- Do a garage band with little drummer girl

I wish there was a proper blues jam night around here.. We have loads of acoustic sessions but never seen/heard of any electric ones. I play acoustic blues though when I can, some "I'm gonna find another you" or Hoochie Coochie Man or my own random blues shuffle songs.

I'm trying to start a blues band at the moment and it's hard as ****, everyone wants to play """indie""" in england. It's not even real indie.. bah..

Blues is more indie than what they want to play. All they wanna do is sound like the arctic monkeys or bloc party and try to get rich quick.. There's nothing indie about it! That's what annoys me so much!

I may have to just start any band and then slowly steer it towards blusier stuff Lol Could work.

From what I just listend to on iTunes, take the backing lines from Bedstuy Parade & Funeral March, add some underground styled lyrics, and you got some sort of gist of it. I love the underground/old-school styling of hip-hop. Aesop Rock, Qwel, Josh Martinez, El-P, Sage Francis, etc are all on my playlist pretty often

This band came to my school earlier this year called Filthy Funk. They were a hip-hop influenced jazz trio who at points has emcees perform with them.

Basically its the mix of what I like, and it'd be awesome to get it all together at some point.

My ideal lineup would be

drums
bass
guitar
turntable for scratching and sampling

Its awesome.... in my head :(

^Blues is the all encompassing blanket of modern music. In everything from hip hop to metal and everything in between. (Jazz being the educated form of blues.... or something like that).

Dude's.... I've been thinkin, how would one play the blues on a fiddle? (btw the difference between a fiddle and a violin is that a fiddle still has the sawdust in it ;)

More like how would it sound? I've heard country and folk with a fiddle but not so much blues

It would sound great! A violinist's vibrato is unbelievable.

I really want to be in a reggae blues band :( Gonna have to start one, but the only bassist I know plays funk.. Hmm now theres an idea.. funk reggae blues band.. could work nicely  I can imagine it now: Slap basslines mixed with reggae groove basslines over me playing a nice reggae rythm with my buddy wailing blues lines on lead. :liplick:

Shoot, reggae is Blue's Island Cousin!!!!!

That would be a good mix. Funk and Reggae use syncopation a lot so that is a good mix. Throw in a nice progression or a good riff, and a wailin solo and you got gold!

Only thing is about the vocals. I like the idea of blues lyrics in a reggae style

Okay if you want blues with violin get an album called "Classically Blues" by Geoff Achison.. Geoff is an amazing Aussie guitar player and singer, some other guy plays upright bass, and then they have a classical violinist doing a lot of solo stuf.. It's one of my favourite albums ever.

I think the 3 of them were actually called 'classically blues' but they just released the album under Geoff's name or something like that.. It's amazing anyway.

Might be hard to find, I could post it on a sharing site if someone explained me how to do it..

EDIT: Found some videos..

Yeah I have both of those

White Boy Blues is... alright, I don't really like it which is both shocking and a shame, because Page is my favorite guitarist ever, and Beck and Clapton are up there, but it just... sucked :(

The SRV/King Album is freaking fantastic though, that one 15 minute long jam(can't remember the song) is amazing
