So I usually listen to to metal bands like Opeth, Tristania, and Katatonia. I love the high level of musicianship that goes into their music, and I generaly like the dark atmosphere. But every now and then, I feel like listening to something that's not so depressive, or just something besides metal. The problem is that most other genres don't seem near as artistic, or well made. I do actually like Bright Eyes, but then, his music tends to be kinda depressive too. I also like some of the other acoustic folk-ish groups, but they just tend to be sad. Death Cab for Cutie and Postal Service are ok, but they have a tendency to just sound kinda gay. So anyway...enough of my ranting...sombody want to suggest some music I might like that's not too depressing or angry?

I just looked them up and umm...that doesn't work for me. Thanks though.

I should probably mention that I'm 21...not some little 14 year old kid or anything like that. (not especially meant to be connected to the above line)

I also meant to say no classic rock please...I already know about that stuff.

Also...if you suggest a group that I actually buy a cd of and like it...I will love you forever

Here's a couple of suggestions:

Earth (Southern Lord era albums: Hex, Hibernaculum and The Bees Made Honey): slow moving instrumental rock, very atmospheric. Great background music or to chill out to. Sample mp3s on the Southern Lord website.

Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan - Ballad of the Broken Seas: she's the cellist from Belle and Sebastian and has her background in folk music and he's the singer from grunge band Screaming Trees and has worked with Queens of the Stone Age and recorded with Nirvana. Their work together ranges from uplifting to haunting but is all very mature sounding, there's lots of acoustic guitars and strings and there's a great contrast in their voices and chemistry between them. They've recorded a second album which is out soon.

Check out Porcupine Tree (Mikael Akerfeldt's favorite band :p: Might be kinda depressing though... I dunno), Spock's Beard and Ayreon (might be a bit depressing too).

Thanks for all the suggestions. I guess It's time for me to reply.

smb: Well I'm not really looking for instrumental stuff, but Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan was pretty good, just a bit to old and folksy sounding for me though. Reminded me of the Robert Plant and Alison Krauss project (which I might have to get).

WILDWAYNE001: Yeah...I can only do hair metal in small amounts every now and then.

RedDeath9: I'm already a fan of Porcupine Tree, but yeah, they're kinda depressing. Those other bands were decent too, but not really what I was looking for.

TV Party: Thanks, I'm looking into these guys. Not too bad.

Fugazirancid: I don't think Sonic Youth is quite my cup of tea, but yeah, maybe Modest Mouse.

octavarium78: ummm...well...I am a fan of Agolloch...but ummm...their happy little numbers like "desolation song", "and the great cold death of the earth" weren't quite what I was looking for. Thanks though.
