im not sure about tonal differences, but chrome pickup covers will always be shiny where your nickel plated covers will get slightly dull over time and the nickel come in a few different finishes as well. you can get what looks like raw nickel to highly polished and looks like chrome.

The person I quoted is correct. Everybody else who ansered was wrong.

Chrome covers are brass plated with crome. These covers are darker and muddier sounding than nickel covers because they will increase inductance. They do stay shinny forever but they tend to be tone killers

Nickel covers are nickel silver (aka white brass, aka german silver) which are nickel plated. These covers look almost the same as chrome when new but do start to go gray with age. Nickel covers do not darken your tone like chrome plated brass does so they don't leaving you sounding muddy.

Raw nickel silver covers don't have the nickel plating on them. When new, they look the same as the plated nickel covers except they will have some scratching due the the tools used to make the covers. They sound the same as the nickel plated covers.
