I saw a can of AXE deodorant, and looked on the back, and found that one of the main ingredients is butane. What could butane possibly do to cover up a smell?

(And, I'm pretty sure AXE deodorant isn't designed to be burned :p: )

Propellant.
OK, I was thinking that too, but couldn't they use something less flammable?

It dries very quickly. You don't want to spray yourself with deodorant and go around being soggy all day.

What fun would that be?

And, no it's not propellant.

they did

but CFCs destroy ozone =/

i know which i'd rather have, just dont smoke and spray....mkay?

butane is also a very small molecule, so it evaporates easily

its compressed air in it, so when you open the valve, it propels it out... butane isnt a propellant in it.

Ya it is.

Examples of such propellants, which are usually liquefiable, include propane, n-butane, iso-butane and methylene chloride, and these can be used individually or in admixture, with or without other volatile liquids.

That site doesn't say anything about butane being used as propellant. It only says that deodorant is made of propellants. The reason why butane is used in AXE only and not other sprays is because butane's high vapor pressure allows it to evaporate quickly, which is handy, since you're spraying it on your body. Most propellants are CFCs, compressed air, or nitrogen dioxide, I believe.
Ok Einstein.
Hey ldl67. I didn't say this but it's a propellant.
Edit. Apology accepted.

I should have been more clear.

I will include things from my last post.

Why is butane not more commonly used in sprays? There are far safer propellants. Butane is easily compressed into liquid form, so when pressure decreases, it turns into a gas and sprays out. I guess you're right that it can be used as a propellant, but I still say that it's primary function is to help the deodorant dry.

Yep sure does. And that's why it's used as a propellant. 2 fer 1 deal.

you've obviously never burned axe.
thats about the onlything its good for, pure pyro fun.

it sure as hell doesn't smell good, and definately doesn't draw the ladies to you, specially not like the commercials would apply.

just by some real cologne then you won't have to worry about butane
