after watching Metallica's one video 5 years ago. i wanted to play a guitar

06-03-2008, 11:36 PM
Jimi Hendrix made me want to pick it up and, oddly enough, less-talented guitarists(Isaac Brock, Jack Johnson, etc.) made me go acoustic.

06-03-2008, 11:38 PM
It's actually a little weird for me. It sort of all hit me at once. Two kids at my lunch table are in a band, and music is the main thing they talk about every single day. Then one of my friends got me into Muse, I listened to them for a while, then all of a sudden I remembered my dad had an acoustic laying around somewhere, and it was just like BOOM! REVELATION!. So I got it out, put on some new strings, tuned it, and it all began there.

So basically Muse is the simple answer, but also sort of indirectly the kids at my table.

06-04-2008, 01:01 AM
The Chili Peppers, hence the screen name too

06-04-2008, 01:57 AM
Tom Delonge

06-04-2008, 02:03 PM
The Libertines, only got into them just before they reunited, if it wasnt for them i wouldnt have played a gig last night, nor would my guitar be on my lap now..

Metallica and avenged sevenfold

06-04-2008, 04:14 PM

Still, Angus Young. Actually Back in Black and Hells Bells

BFMV fan

Synyster Gates! from avenged sevenfold, the first time i heard the cool riffs and solos he played, i decided to pick up a guitar

06-04-2008, 08:43 PM
Munky and Korn in general

06-04-2008, 08:46 PM
AC/DC but I wasn't very motivated at first.....Then I heard Blackened by Metallica and something just clicked in my head and I had to play my guitar right then and that was about 2 or 3 years ago...

I'd have to say that I was amazed by Jimmy Page and his amazing rock/blues sound and solos. Jimi Hendrix drove me crazy with his wahs, pull offs and hammer ons and Joe Satriani's melodies and kick ass riffs. Those three got me all hooked on the guitar.

I started with drums though, after listening to Danny Carey from Tool and Neil Peart from Rush.

And Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers is making me play the bass, but no money for bass guitar yet.

06-05-2008, 03:27 PM
Deep Purple.
I played "Smoke On The Water" in Guitar Hero and thought, "Wow, this solo kicks ass." So then I went to Sam Ash and got me a git-box.

I didn't love rock music until I heard them.

06-09-2008, 04:58 PM
Daron Malakian of System of a Down. No fancy solos or anything, but after listening to their songs and hearing his riffs so many times I just decided "I want to do that".

06-09-2008, 09:44 PM

06-09-2008, 09:58 PM
I'd always wanted to play guitar since I was little. But it was Nirvana and Green Day who really made me get serious about playing, and trying to form a band.
I know, cliche, right?

06-09-2008, 10:03 PM
Watching Metallica live made me want to sing/play

06-10-2008, 06:02 AM
I was inspired just by hearing a guy in my local music store shredding like crazy.

06-10-2008, 11:25 AM
Megadeth - after hearing tornado of souls for the first time, phoaaaar!

06-11-2008, 10:56 AM

I've wanted to play guitar since before I can remember. Then I heard "Fade To Black" when I was 14 and that started my transformation from another hip hopper to a guitarist. No more than a week after I started working, I bought my first guitar and soon after I bought an amp and the very third thing I learned was the intro to One.

06-12-2008, 01:24 PM
Originally Switchfoot, but more recently, Slayer, BFMV, my friends band Adopt The Plague (I want to be better than them)

06-13-2008, 02:42 PM
originally, i was like, hey i want to play guitar. so i tried it a bit, then found Eric Clapton, and he influenced me to keep going and try a lot harder. so im still playing now because of Eric Clapton

06-13-2008, 04:02 PM
Kurt Cobain, loooooong time ago, took me 2 years to convince my mom to get me elec guitar...lol

06-13-2008, 05:44 PM
No one band did it. I just listened to music and I thought: Being able to make those sounds would be kinda cool.

06-14-2008, 09:36 AM
For me it was Metallica. When I saw James Hetfield and his Explorer on concert, then I thought "damn, I wanna be like him!" :D

06-14-2008, 01:47 PM
Nikki Sixx in dont go away mad made me want to get a bass

Tom Morello - Rage riffs not the Audioslave ****

06-15-2008, 07:53 AM
Tom Morello - Rage riffs not the Audioslave ****

You don't think Cochise is a memorable riff?
You don't think Shadow on the Sun has great guitarwork?

06-15-2008, 07:12 PM

06-15-2008, 10:15 PM
For me it was Nirvana, I remember their greatest hits album being one of the first cds I ever bought. I listened to it over and over until I pressured by parents into paying for guitar and lessons. Haven't looked back since!

06-18-2008, 02:20 AM
You don't think Cochise is a memorable riff?
You don't think Shadow on the Sun has great guitarwork?

Yea what I meant is that those sweet guitar riffs from the early Rage was what made me want to - I'm still an Audioslave fan, the **** I'm talking about is the stuff on Revelations, the first two CDs were good times.

06-18-2008, 08:12 AM
Slash... he opened up to tons of other people who have also influenced me but slash is defidently number one.

06-18-2008, 08:10 PM
The artist that made me really want to pick up a guitar and start fleshing out music was John Wozniak of Marcy Playground. In my opinion, Marcy Playground was one of the most under rated bands to stem from the 90's music scene. Everyone knows "Sex and Candy" but they came up with songs so much better than that one.

06-18-2008, 10:49 PM
my dad bought me led zeppelin best of the early days; one day i was listening to the solo in dazed and confused and WHAMMO.

and an honourable mention to justin and dan hawkins who constantly inspire me to keep going and get better.

06-19-2008, 08:38 AM
The Kinks... the band that got me into music, also got me into the guitar.
Tom Scholz (Boston) got me into keyboard
and drums just looked like fun :)

06-19-2008, 09:25 AM
Yea what I meant is that those sweet guitar riffs from the early Rage was what made me want to - I'm still an Audioslave fan, the **** I'm talking about is the stuff on Revelations, the first two CDs were good times.

Fair enough.

06-19-2008, 04:58 PM

06-19-2008, 06:29 PM
Synyster Gates inspired me. His solo work is incredible. The first time I heard his solo for Afterlife I couldn't resist it. Then the riff he lays down in Dear God just blew my mind. He's been my inspiration ever since.

06-19-2008, 06:41 PM
I'd had an acoustic since I was nine, but I never really paid as much attention to it as I should have done.
It was back in year 7 or 8 and I was listening to Backstreet boys and Britney Spears on a daily basis....that was when Slipknot, Linkin Park and System Of A Down gate-crashed my opinion on music, haha. Then I payed attention to my little acoustic!! Hell yeah!

06-20-2008, 12:56 PM
the bands that really got me to pick up a guitar is Flylef, All Time Low, and Relient K. All three of these bands have been my favorite since i have discovered them. NO ONE CAN TAKE THERE PLACE. :fight:

Guns N' r0ses
06-20-2008, 01:08 PM
I'd Say metallica, when I first heard the intro to Enter Sandman but the band that kept me going and wanting to get better was Guns N' Roses & Slash

06-20-2008, 02:27 PM
Jack Black in the movie "School Of Rock"

06-20-2008, 02:32 PM

06-21-2008, 12:06 AM
Metallica - Fade to Black. The Acoustic intro hit me like a tonne of bricks, as soon as I heard it I knew I had to be able to play it.

06-21-2008, 01:34 AM
well i wanted one anyways, was about to get an electric when i saw frusciante play under the bridge on acoustic in that vpro thing.. and i needed to be able to play it..

06-21-2008, 08:22 PM
greenday, i wanted to be a punk rocker

06-21-2008, 08:51 PM
watching all those guitarists just do hammer-ons and pull-offs like 20 times in a row without strumming in solos made me wanna get that good that i can at least sumwat do that

i gess

EDIT: ive only been playing about 5 months so obviously i cant do that yet but it would be cool if i could

06-21-2008, 09:57 PM
Guns N' Roses especially Slash. :D

06-21-2008, 10:30 PM
the intro to violent pornography by system of a down.
after that i just had to learn the rest of their songs. but slash made me reallllllly want to get better

06-22-2008, 09:24 AM
The White Stripes.

The song 'Fell In Love With a Girl' made me exclaim countless profanities at squirrels.

06-22-2008, 09:28 AM
Mine was the first time i heard "Black Dog" by Led Zeppelin. And then i heard The White Stripes, and then i picked up a guitar.

06-22-2008, 09:29 AM
a7x, mcr and green day

06-22-2008, 11:39 AM
My first favourite band was the Beatles, but the first band to inspire me to pick up the guitar was the Who. Pete Townshend might not be the most technically skilled guitarist, but he has so much undeniable energy and passion.

06-24-2008, 11:22 AM
Mostly Avenged Sevenfold, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. I know its a weird combination but i found that they both had a good sound when i listened to them and decided I wanted to try what they had been doing. So ya..A7X, and RHCP.

Check out my band---http://artists.ultimate-guitar.com/earth_to_you/
we just started up and have a sound kinda similar to Foo Fighters and Nirvana :]

06-24-2008, 11:22 AM
bowling for soup :D

06-24-2008, 12:41 PM
Toadies, Incubus, and Metallica, all in the late 90s.

06-25-2008, 05:07 PM
hes a finger tapping genious

06-25-2008, 07:53 PM
ac/dc and guns n roses

06-25-2008, 07:56 PM
As weird as it sounds, Green Day. They made me first want to start playing and I went from there... now I barely play their stuff at all.

06-25-2008, 09:14 PM
dave mustaine

06-25-2008, 10:05 PM
I wasn't inspired really by a particular band, and I may be shunned for saying this on a site about guitar playing, but Guitar Hero III inspired me to play real guitar, and consult it when I'm trying to learn a song :D

06-25-2008, 10:59 PM
Cant Stop and Under the Bridge made me want to play when i was like 10 but i never got a guitar. 4 years after that my friends showed me a video of Jeff Beck playing Cause Weve Ended As Lovers. 2 weeks later i bought a sucky epiphone off this one guy but now i have a strat

06-25-2008, 11:06 PM
There was actually Quite a few. They where kinda building me up to play i guess.

first was Avenged Sevenfold-Unholy confessions. That was an epic journey to learn that, ecspecially when you've just picked up a guitar. After a couple more songs i stopped playing for a bit. Then I started listening to Lamb of God.Redneck and laid to rest were awesome so that inspired me to pick up a guitar again..(Thanks Gates and Mark.)

06-26-2008, 08:30 PM
no band actually made put the idea of it into my head. i wanted to for really really long time but pink floyds wish you were here just made instantly do it

06-27-2008, 06:02 PM
Which band or artist made you want to learn guitar? the one that started it all and you still love to listen to! mine is guns n roses. slash rocks!! lol so whos yours?

Amen to that brother

06-27-2008, 10:39 PM
the one artist that made me want to pick up a guitar was kurt cobain. This was during the beginning of seventh grade when i was really into blink-182 and sum 41. I heard nirvana through channel surfing. They were playing some segment because nirvana's smells like teen spirit came on and the opening chords got me hooked. From there i started listening to them and i got a guitar. Nirvana unplugged is what really hooked me acoustically.

The one band that really motivated me musically was avenged sevenfold. I heard them back freshman year when Waking the Fallen just came out. I heard unholy confessions and thought wow, here is something i've never heard before. From there i was an a7x fan and but it wasn't til i saw them at chain reaction that i realized i wanted be in a band and i wanted to be a singer and lyricist.

06-28-2008, 03:12 AM
well avenged sevenfold made me pick up mine. synyster gates licks an riffs an solos are amazing!

06-28-2008, 03:15 AM
King Crimson. Robert Fripp is a God.

06-28-2008, 03:19 AM

watching this video two years ago

06-28-2008, 04:35 PM
Led Zeppelin.

06-28-2008, 10:42 PM
I heard the version of Walk this Way with Run DMC, and I was like D:

So I saved up and bought a guitar, learned the riff from that song, and put it down for 3 months, then took lessons for 3 years, then put it away for a year, then picked it back up. It's staying now, now that I understand music better.

06-29-2008, 12:16 AM
King Crimson. Robert Fripp is a God.

Quoted For the Fucking Truth.

Oh Shize
06-29-2008, 06:39 AM
I started playing guitar cause it sounded cool, stopped for a year, heard Newborn by Muse, loved the opening riff and decided to start again.

Yar, so Matt Bellamy. Not my favorite guitarist though.

06-29-2008, 07:52 PM
For me it's definitly Lynard Skynard - Free Bird and Van Halen - Eruption. After listening to those two songs I had made up my mind. Also, Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb inspired me to continue playing at those difficult moments

07-01-2008, 03:18 AM
Honestly, it was Green Day...I used to be a BIG fan and I bought Bullet In A Bible which was their concert DVD/CD and I started to kinda want to play just because it sounded good and the crowd loved it. My dad said to me shortly after this "Instead of just listening to this, why don't you just learn to play something?" and that is when it hit me to learn guitar. I bought one(Epiphone Les Paul Special II) and my dad had a Fender amp that he never used and I started to play. At first I sucked....bad, but then I started to progress fast. I played a LOT of Green Day and then one day I started listening to Nirvana and that inspired me to play slightly harder stuff. Then onto Black Sabbath and AC/DC/.

That was about a year ago or more. Since then I have learned much more and I am starting to learn some Zeppelin and some Hendrix and all the other good stuff. I have been learning some theory and playing a bit of classical guitar too.

In short Billie Joe Armstrong got me to play guitar. I know most don't like Green Day, but their older stuff is great.

07-01-2008, 09:08 PM
System of a Down, I thought the intro to Hypnotize and Toxicity were the most badass riffs back in the day

07-01-2008, 09:52 PM
Johnny Cash's lead guitarist Luther Perkins, Sun Records Era Elvis Presley's Lead Guitarist Scotty Moore and old & new Rockabilly music. The beat and the riffs are awesome. Nothing like having a beer or Jack Daniels whiskey on the rocks while jamming along to a rockabilly song.

07-01-2008, 11:11 PM
Stevie Ray Vaughan.

07-02-2008, 05:33 AM
For me it was hit me with your best shot by Pat Benartar. I really don't know why it was that song but it was so catchy and great to listen to that I just had to pick up a guitar and play it. Even the school band is playin it at our school, all because of me, I got into the band by playin that song actually.

07-02-2008, 01:29 PM
Radiohead, Jhonny Greenwood Rocks...
Also Noel Gallagher, Jack Johnson, And Silverchair..

07-04-2008, 10:30 PM
For me there were alot songs just to listen to the beat it sound awesome. plus i also always wanted to play the guitar from a young age because i thought they were cool :P

07-04-2008, 11:59 PM
I think the first time was when my brother gave me a slipknots original album to listen to. ever since then ive studied many bands and have had many inspirations along the road.

remember a true artist's motto should be that Muzic=Life

Ok the 1st time I started playing the guitar was I was 9yrs old and Metallica's One video was big. Then I stopped playing I was in college and Korn inspired me to start up again. Then Ron Jarzombek inspired me to start my own cover band.

07-07-2008, 02:55 PM
Metallica started it all and then Guns N' Roses made me practice even more

07-07-2008, 04:19 PM

07-09-2008, 10:37 PM
Keith Urban inspired me to learn guitar. But it was Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance that got me thinking about forming a band.

07-12-2008, 02:59 PM
Tyson Ritter; I heard his story how he learned.
The story was somewhere along the lines of, Nick Wheeler had a band (like in High school), and He asked Tyson to join and play Bass. Tyson said Yes, But he had no idea how to play it. So he spent a whole enitre summer I beleive and learned it.

Ever since then, I wanted to play a guitar.

Foo Fighters I wanted to play monkey wrench

07-12-2008, 07:02 PM
The Who.

I wanted to play drums after hearing Keith Moon play, but my mum and dad thought it'd be too loud. So they got my a guitar instead with some headphones. Which i soon accidentally broke, so the idea that the guitar was quite went out the window.

I don't know what the **** i would be doing with out my guitar. Probably Studying for a good job or something. Yet i can't think of anything better. The Who changed my life.

07-12-2008, 08:27 PM
foo fighters did it for me :)

07-13-2008, 11:37 PM
Listening to "Spud's Mackenzies party hits" when i was 5 made me like rock, and then I started asking for a guitar after listening to a soundtrack that had Hoobastank and Story of the Year.

07-14-2008, 07:29 PM
Would it be funny if i say Jason Newstead? Cause when I was younger all I had was the Black Album in cassette form, and I LOVED the intro to "The God That Failed" Then by the time I got earlier albums, i learned that these albums had a different bass player, and I grew more fond of this dude.

07-14-2008, 07:55 PM
listening to black sabbath, hendrix, and van halen :D

07-14-2008, 07:57 PM
For me it wasn't really a band/artist. It was my cousin, who was nice enough to let me wank on his strat while I hung with him, and I decided to get my own after he taught me a few chords.

07-15-2008, 12:09 PM
dont laugh at me...but...

Joe trohman from Fall Out Boy inspired me to learn the guitar cos he always looks like he has fun when he plays...and i like that!!

oh and Ray Toro from MCR, i think he is amazing and Synyster gates is just awesome

07-15-2008, 10:30 PM
John Frusciante (RHCP), Buckethead, and Satriani. For sure.

07-15-2008, 11:20 PM
Chris Wolstenholme of MUSE, Hysteria is ever so fun.

Homerun Hero
07-16-2008, 04:52 PM
Coheed and Cambria got me started to play

07-16-2008, 09:16 PM

07-17-2008, 05:30 PM
Listening to Joy Division back when i was bout 5 or 6 is the reason i fell in love with 'proper' music, and wanted to start playing.
Beirut makes me want to play the Uke and Accordion.
Chan Cat Power makes me want to play the pink oboe

07-17-2008, 09:25 PM
Believe it or not, the Gorillaz.

I liked 5/4 and I wanted to hear it on a guitar being played by me.

07-18-2008, 08:20 PM
Dave Grohl did a little bit when I first picked it up. I figured if he could play that well while he was singing I could do it too. TUrns out I can't do both but I can play half decent now.
Another is Shaun Morgan from Seether. Those guys have a lot of memorable riffs.

07-19-2008, 05:34 AM
not gonna lie.... i saw green day live and then decided i had to play. also, blink-182. i'm a pop punker at the core and proud of it!

more recently, john frusciante and weezer, as well as the matches, inspire me

Helter Skelter
07-19-2008, 11:55 AM
RUSH, Alex Lifeson made me wanna play guitar.

07-19-2008, 05:20 PM
Bruce Springsteen
The Who

07-19-2008, 07:20 PM
I was young and stupid and that's why I give a chance to guitar thanks to Linkin Park... :( I love playing guitar but the matter why I play just makes me angry :(

im not mental
07-19-2008, 08:07 PM
i started cuz i was bored one summer.

but my inspirations around that time were dan donegan (disturbed), jade puget (afi), and metallica

07-19-2008, 10:01 PM
System of a downs daron malakian. legend.

Darc Discordia
07-20-2008, 04:54 PM
Several guitarists made me want to start learning. The most influential, however, was Tom Morello, of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. I really liked his style and how nothing he did sounded like anything that anyone else was doing with a guitar.

07-22-2008, 06:42 PM
guitar hero 2 was the real thing that got me started because all of the awesome crap that every had already been able to do
stairway to heaven made me almost cry because i thought id never be able to play that beautiful

overall.... im guessing its the game that got my started
oh and hearts "crazy on you" acoustic solo intro was awesome that was a big part too

07-22-2008, 09:18 PM
People critisize this band all the time, but it was really when I started listening to Dragonforce, and I heard Herman Li soloing. At the time, I didn't know much about guitar and I was like absolutely blown away, especially by his solo on "Soldiers of the Wasteland" I never thought I'd be able to play that well, but I figured if I could even come close to his ridiculous speed, it'd be enough for me. Every time I got bored of guitar, or wanted to quit, I just listened to Dragonforce and remembered why I wanted to play in the first place.

07-24-2008, 04:40 PM
Hawk Nelson

07-24-2008, 07:58 PM
Lostprophets/Lee Gaze. Watching them/him live really inspired me.

07-24-2008, 10:04 PM

07-25-2008, 02:32 PM
Lol.... i may sound weird but Daron Malaikan (SOAD)

07-25-2008, 04:41 PM
Well the bands that inspired me were Goo Goo Dolls, Dashboard Confessional, and Extreme with "More than words." Those were the 3 that did it for me... I then watched a friend play guitar and he said he taught himself so I was like well he taught himself so then I'll teach myself...

07-30-2008, 06:46 PM
The first time I heard 'Bulls on Parade'.

07-30-2008, 08:49 PM
No band guitar hero 2 did

07-31-2008, 09:50 AM
I was first inspired to play guitar by a mix of 80's and 90's cartoon theme songs, tv ads, and tennis racket manufacturers.

The first band I started playing would have been years after the idea was planted in my head.

07-31-2008, 11:56 AM
Ladies and gentleman... Tenacious D
Well actually just Jack Black at first and one of his movies, School Of Rock. That movie pretty much turned my whole life to guitars and rock, I know it sounds stupid but it's true. A day later when I found about The D a realized I can rock out even with an acoustic .. and it was a rollercoaster since then :D

07-31-2008, 11:04 PM
Nirvana. In fact, that is all I can play at the moment (I still suck and Nirvana is fairly easy)

08-01-2008, 08:36 AM
Honestly, no band. It was basically picking up a guitar that made me continue wanting to pick up a guitar.

08-02-2008, 07:12 PM
I was playing guitar before I did but RHCP have made me want to keep learning new songs on guitar.

08-02-2008, 08:44 PM
the VERY first thing was....youtube. Jerry C's cannon in D just AMAZED me. thats what inspired me the most. then there comes avenged sevenfold (city of evil..not the new cd. ew. :p) when i first watched seize the day video, the solo blew me away and the feel of the song was jsut so amazing. :liplick:

08-03-2008, 01:46 AM
Three days grace

08-03-2008, 09:43 PM

Actually wait, nevermind, I started listening to them after I got my guitar. I have no idea why I bought a guitar hahahaha!!! But I'm freakin happy I did. Best thing I ever did.

08-05-2008, 02:26 AM
Slash's solos on November Rain.

08-05-2008, 08:46 PM
Killswitch Engage and Kurt Cobain from nirvana :)

Billy M
08-05-2008, 10:31 PM
Offspring. No matter how long I stop listening to them, I come crawling back to their music. Must be due to those many nights as a kid where I'd fall asleep to their CDs in my walkman. Dexter's vocals, who many find annoying, are just kind of embedded in my neurons now as what music's supposed to sound like. Thus, from them I got into all kinds of punk and an obsession with their music in particular.

08-05-2008, 10:35 PM
this will sound really sad but I remember wanting to learn the guitar when I was ten and I saw the world premiere music video of bat country by a7x with my brother. Not even knowing what hammer-ons were, syn looked like how I wanted to look with a guitar. Now, after 8 months of playing, I can totally play bat country and other songs like that backwards and forwards but I'm glad they got me into guitar

08-06-2008, 02:38 PM
Linkin park ... n Breaking benjamin ... they really rock the hell out of me

08-06-2008, 10:06 PM
Ace Frehley's smoking guitar planted the seed, and when I need a little inspiration, Johnny Winter does the trick :D

08-07-2008, 12:14 AM
old school punk bands... the music from tony hawk's pro skater. But whats important to me is that people like Hendrix, Cobain, and yes, Frusciante, kept me playing.

08-08-2008, 05:00 AM
Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nirvana got me into playing the guitar. I still like listening to them...

08-08-2008, 08:44 AM

08-08-2008, 04:57 PM

Not a band really, but I saw that show where Gene Simmons went into some private school and made a bunch of kids start a band and I was like " I can do that better ".
Rock School?

I don't think it was private. In the first version anyway.

But yeah, they weren't very good.

08-08-2008, 11:58 PM
in flames older songs that had that 'singing' guitar going on in most of their songs. at that time i didn't even like metal but i liked how in flames was melodic and i liked their music cuz of the guitar and not really for the vocals.

although nowadays metal is mostly what i listen to because of the energy it brings and music/technicality that i appreciate from being a musician.

although i've learned most people that aren't musicians are like minded to how i was before i knew how to play guitar, although most still love that 'energy' regardless if musician or not

08-10-2008, 12:20 AM
Jet. After seeing them play rip it up and are you gonna be my girl live, I had to learn to play those songs too.

08-11-2008, 11:06 PM
Me and my dad were watching MTV2 one night (back when they played a lot of music videos) when the video for One by Metallica came on. I turned to my dad and said "wow he's good" during Hammet's solo (I was 13 at the time). My mom walked into the room, he turned to her and said "Your son wants to play guitar like that." (even though I didn't say that I wanted to, cause I wasnt even thinking of playing guitar at the time). Next thing I know it is Christmas and I have a guitar and haven't looked back.

08-13-2008, 10:29 PM

Probably Dave Murray or Kirk Hammett.

08-20-2008, 02:00 AM
My friend got me to play. Ma and a friend basically went over to our friends house one night to learn guitar for the first time. He taught us how to play Smoke On The Water and Iron Man.

Soon after I learned Stairway to Heaven through constant practice. Jimi inspired me alot too.

What got me playing ALOT was The Strokes. My friend listened to them 24/7 and it kinda rubbed off on me. I started by learning Reptilia, which was my first song that I learned in its entirety. First solo too. Then it went from there with me and him learning songs together. The two guitarists helped in us both learning the songs too.

08-24-2008, 03:01 PM
Ace Frehley

08-24-2008, 03:48 PM
kirk hammet from metallica made me want to play, but synister gates made me want to dedicate myself to shredding like hell.

09-13-2008, 02:21 PM

When i was 13 one of my friends who was 18 gave me Lateralus. After emersing myself in that album i just had to play guitar.

09-13-2008, 07:57 PM

But I still can't pick up the music's solo....heauhea

09-13-2008, 10:47 PM
Kansas, specifically Kerry Livgren from Kansas. After hearing "Carry on my Wayward Son" on the radio, I had to learn how to play it. Locked myself in a room and learned the riff on an accoustic, and learned it well before I learned a single chord.

09-14-2008, 08:18 PM
velvet revolver and old guns n' roses

09-14-2008, 09:38 PM

DEEP PURPLE-smoke on the water/BOSTON-more than a feeling

03-10-2009, 05:00 PM
Because of music, I've always kinda wanted to play guitar, but never really gave it much thought. Then I discovered Dream Theater and the wonders of John Petrucci, and I got a guitar as soon as possible.

03-11-2009, 09:35 AM
In no particular order(coz i discovered all of them around the same time,1976-79)
Michael Schenker,Eddie Van Halen,Uli Jon Roth,Ritchie Blackmore,Angus Young,Paul Kossof,Gary Moore and Mick Ralphs. Then in the mid to late 80's it was Yngwie Malmsteen,Joe Satriani,Vinnie Moore,Jason Becker,Paul Gilbert and Steve Vai.The latest additional influences are John Petrucci and Joe Bonamassa.
Six of these I've had the pleasure of seeing live.
Two of them I've had the honour of meeting and spending a little time with!!!
Nice list,hey?!?!

03-13-2009, 08:05 AM
Dir en grey, though I must say I hate them now except for their old stuff. Their guitars always were and always will be fairly mediocre. There are various bands that keep me interested in learning guitar, however; Dué le quartz, Velze Dieulawahl, Gill'e Cadith, and EllDorado just to name a few. (Yes, they're all disbanded. So what? :P)

03-13-2009, 05:51 PM
I've liked music for so long that I've had an urge to play guitar for years. I guess what really led to me picking up the instrument was Alice in Chains, though.

03-14-2009, 07:33 PM
When i heard Muse and saw a few people play their songs I JUST FELL IN LOVE WITH THE GUITAR!!

So in a short answer, Muse

03-16-2009, 02:18 AM

So Killswitch Engage, Haste The Day, All That Remains

03-26-2009, 05:27 PM
When I was really young my older brother was into the glam rock stuff of the 80s Bon Jovi springing to mind, guess that got me into guitar music. In my teens I was into things like Thin Lizzy (Live and Dangerous I loved that album). But what made me go out and buy a guitar was listening to Eric Claptons Cream stuff and Mark Knopfler. From there I have really got into electric blues, SRV, Joe Bonamassa (Im abusing that music now!). Really quite varied tastes but I love my blues and new interpretations of those old blues tracks!

03-29-2009, 02:11 AM
I don't think it was a band in particular; I think it was rock music in general that made me want to pick up guitar.

03-29-2009, 02:15 AM
