Ok so I found a used 100W Carvin MTS3200 Master Tube Series 50th Anniversary Edition head online.

For $300.

I've heard it has amazing cleans and very nice distortion, both a must for me. Right now I have a Roland Cube 30 and an assortment of pedals....the Cube's clean channel is pretty good and then I use a Line 6 Uber Metal for distortion, it's ok.

Should I go ahead and buy it? I was planning on getting a new amp in the coming months, but I was gonna get a combo simply because I have no plans of gigging or anything, just home recording and stuff. Do you think this would be a little excessive or is the deal just too good to pass up?

I don't know what to do!

Oh and could anyone recommend an attenuator? I have a feeling I'm gonna need one since were talking bedroom practicing levels here....

I'm pretty sure the MTS is switchable between 25/50/100W, so an attentuator won't be needed. (Edit: Nvm, I'm thinking of the X100. The MTS is switchable between 50/100W. You can still always save the money and just not crank it.)

But yeah, great deal. What style do you play?

I have a V3 and before that I had an SX200, before I bought both of those amps I tried out the MTS and the first time I didn't have the money and the second time I decided the V3 was worth the extra money but for $300 an MTS head is an incredible deal I would not pass that up if I were you. As far as cabs go a Carvin would be an easy choice but they are pretty expensive, if you don't mind waiting a while you can order a custom Earcandy cab with whatever speakers you want.

Well for the gain channel I would want kickass distortion cuz I play metal of all kinds. But I also love ambient clean passages, jazzy solos, and stuff like that, so the cleans are also pretty important to me.

The MTS is a great amp. The distortion is great for some metal, as it is really tight and defined, but it won't get you into extreme metal gain. It can get a pretty good John Petrucci sound, so that is awesome in my books. Also, apparantly Daron Malakian used it in the studio for the Hypnotize/Mezmerize albums, so that gives you a good idea of it, as it gets that sound really spot on.

The clean channel is also really good, but it could definately use more bass.

For cabs, the Carvin MTS412 cab is a great choice, i have it and i use a Randall RH200G2 head and it has the perfect tight low end thump, and it is 400 watts so you will never have to worry about it not being powerful enough.

I say for $300, most definately get it, it is a great amp. And it can change between 50/100 watts, 4, 8 and 16 ohms and 6L6/EL34 tubes all with the flick of a switch.

How bout a Vader cab then?
