I've been into ska for anout a year now I listen to bands like operation Ivy, the slackers, the aggrolities etc. I'm lookin' for really old school jazzy ska bands or albums any suggestions. I was thinking of getting a desmond decker album.

First wave ska is a genre best listened to through singles/seperate songs and not albums IMO. It is dance music after all.

This is very true.

Even today Jamaican music is driven by its .45's and not albums.

The best thing to do is buy a singles compilation. Look into some Trojan box sets.

Buy a Toots and the Maytals compilation.
If you get a Dekker album make it a compilation.

And if yer feeling adventurous check out some of Sonny Rollins' Calypso.

Sunny Days and Starry Nights is Ace but is really hard to get a hold of in mp3 form.

Actually ska and Calypso have gotten me into more African Stuff like Highlife and JuJu and if you think you might like that stuff try an album called Sankofa.

Good Highlife.

Also Pharaoh Sanders has some good stuff but again I'm diverging waaay off into Afro centric shit...

All dance music is. A DJ cant spin a whole album during one of their mixes.

I'll second toots and the maytals too.

Off topic slightly, you may find this article slightly amusing about black music http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/justice/article1519825.ece

But to be honest, this is the only black music that really matters to me

Only because all the emo/indie hipsters claim to like him in a half hearted attempt to look "open minded."

the specials are the best, but I'm pretty sure he wants first wave.

Definitely get Desmond Dekker and toots and the maytals (spelling?)

+1

It's frustrating because I do really like Dizzee Rascal but the sort of people who claim to like his music tend to be doing it, as you say, to look open minded and I don't want to be tarred with the same brush.

I really like The Ethiopians and like DanRev and PowerChords said, I only discovered them through various compilations. The Skatalites are a pretty safe bet for quality first wave, as well as Toots and the Maytals and Lord Tanamo.

Yeah for some reason the skatalites slipped my mind, they're fun though.

I'm not so much into First Wave, but I like Justin Hinds, The Beltones, and the Skatilites. Like someone else said, check out the Trojan box sets, my favorite is Volume 2.
