Why is it that shredders like Malmsteen and Gilbert are so successful in the land of the rising sun and constantly fill up large stadiums and sell millions of albums?

Is there something in japanese peoples' culture that embraces virtuosity, is it a trend or is it just their musical taste as such?

The Japanese are insane (http://www.i-am-bored.com/bored_link.cfm?link_id=35086).

Do not question their ways.

because the whole japanese culture loves ridiculous things:

Pokemon: ridiculously cute

Anime: Ridiculous battles

Paul Gilbert: Ridiculous speed

Yngwie Malmsteen: Ridiculously fat

Because countries around the world tend to have a lag in cultural diffusion. Basically what's cool in the US (or the 'west') takes a number of years to make its way abroad. That's also why washed up movie stars can make $$$ in Japan, because they're not washed up there yet!

I think the flashiness and technicality really appeals to Asians, who are initially lured by the jaw dropping speed, and then as they delve further into shred, start to appreciate it as a musical form.

That was the case with me, and a few other guys I know. The first time I heard Scarified and Crushing Day, I'm pretty sure I soiled myself.

Because Japan rocks?

See Gantz for further examples. (v. graphic manga - kiddies beware)

i think it has to do with the japan peoples ways. To me the strive for perfection. so it only makes sence that they would like shred. the speed of the playing, the cleaness of there playing, ect ect.
