View Full Version : Your all-time favourite guitarist - hard to say, isn't it?

I often think about, if asked, who I'd state as being my all-time fave axeslinger. Ask me 7 years ago, I would've said Satch; 4 years ago I would've said Dimebag; a year ago Lane; now... who knows.

So the question I'm putting forth is - how easy for you is it to name your unconditional favourite, and will that ever change? I bet there's a right mixed bag of answers for that.

As far as my faves go, I find it extremely difficult to name just one guitarist whose work I'd take over anybody else's and then stick to them. More or less impossible, I'd say. Instead, I categorise and just try to pick one if I'm going through a phase (prog, fusion, instrumental rock, shreddy, etc.)

Here are my categories, and the favourite of each:

*Best player in terms of pure technique? - Shawn Lane
*Most interesting player, music-wise? - Allan Holdsworth
*Coolest player, personality-wise? - John Petrucci
*Player who has the best tone, gear-wise? - Eric Johnson
*Who simply 'rocks' the hardest or dost kicketh the most ass? - Dimebag
*Funniest player, who tries to be funny? - Michael Angelo Batio
*Funniest player, who doesn't try to be funny? - Yngwie J. Malmsteen
*Who teaches the best on videos? - Paul Gilbert
*Player who scares the shit out of me, music-wise? - Allan Holdsworth
*Player who scares the shit out of me, technique-wise? - Shawn Lane
*Grooviest player, all-around? - Greg Howe

Do I still have a favourite out of all those? No way. I never will. There are guys (many not on that list) who I'll listen to almost every week, and others who I'll come back to after some months or even years. It's all phases. I could never pick one as my out-and-out favourite.

Can you?

Kirk Hammett all the way for me. He and Metallica are what brought me into guitar. i know for a fact that there are guitarists out there that could mop the floor with his ass but to me he'll always be my favorite. Its weird yeah but that's the way it is for me

Slash, no contest.

He may not play insanely fast, but what he does sounds damn good. The blues style guitar over Hard Rock riffs, just awesome. GN'R = Favorite band of all time.

Paul Gilbert, Randy Rhoads, Jake E Lee, Bruce Bouillet (sp?), Van Halen, Yngwie, Mattias IA Eklundh, Alexi Laiho, Reb Beach, George Lynch, Ron Thal.

My favorites. Of course I like lots of others too :p

based on their music. I never listen to someone just for technique. Else it'd be listening a hellova lot to Shawn Lane.

DaFjory

Just to clarify - grooviest player means making music that has a great "groove" or a head-nodding feel to it; as if you want to start busting a move or dancing to what they're playing. If anyone says Holdsworth for that, then I don't know what planet they're on. :p:

And funniest player, who doesn't try to be funny means anyone who takes themselves very seriously, but comes across as a total clown without meaning to - hence, Yngwie (or even early Impellitteri; just read the booklet of Stand In Line and you'll know why). He's always soooo serious in his music and demeanour, but I don't know if he realises that people just laugh at him.

If he deems Sambora to be his favourite guitarist, then fair play to him. Obviously he wouldn't have much use for this topic. But there's no need to go dismissing speed and yakking about that "feeling" stuff - in a shred forum, no less.

Well, he did somewhat do a bit of that bog-standard legato wanking when I saw him live. :p:

So technically, he would be at the very bottom of the list when it comes to 'general ability to shred' - along with the guys from Poison and other hair bands. If it's even remotely fast, it's shred in my view. Just not very l33t.
