THE Shoegaze/Dream Pop thread to END all others.

So I've done a search and there isn't a single thread dedicated to the genre. Lots of request for bands and a MBV thread which is sort of a shoegaze thread but talking about other bands on it is both blasphemic and spameous.

So post here for all band requests, promotion of your own shoegaze band, how to sounds like a shoegaze band etc.

Good Last.Fm group with lots of shoegaze bands to choose from:

http://www.last.fm/group/Newgaze

Here's a list of bands in alphabetical order:

Sonic Youth?

So, how does one sound like a shoegaze band?

Tombe 01-05-2009 07:43 AM

Lots of reverb and distortion. Obviously there's a bit more to it than that but that's a good place to start.

Has anyone ever heard of Ceremony? They're a new band but I think it's excellent shoegaze:

If anyone can suggest me similar bands to this, please do!

BTW, MBV had one of the greatest shows I've ever went to. I absolutely love them.

edit: ****, you guys are way ahead of me.

philjay 01-05-2009 08:00 AM

Well, other than MBV to which they are pretty much a clone band, I would just hunt for more shoegaze :)

cmakkidguitar 01-05-2009 12:53 PM

Sonice youth?

There's a new one :p:

Love a bit o shoegaze from time to time

I've basically been re-addicted to Lush lately.

"Split" is just such an amazing album. It's so soothing, and calming.

Bluesbreaker7 01-05-2009 01:59 PM

Jesus and Mary Chain shoegaze? Not so sure.

Shoegaze to me is about texture. Ganted the MC have that but not in the same way as someone like Ride (who you should add to the list) or Slowdive. I might call them dream-pop if I was feeling generous. Regardless, they're fantastic and I appreciate it's a difficult thing to define.

I'm enjoying M83 a lot at the moment.

redh0tchilip3pp 01-05-2009 02:20 PM

Deerhunter are pretty 'shoegaze'.

fallenangel20 01-05-2009 02:56 PM

Jesu.

Yes, Broadrick has brought some of his industrial metal into some of the earlier material, but you can't deny the direct influence of shoegaze, and the clear progression Broadrick has made with it.

"Silver" is one of the best tracks I've heard from any band ever.

Yeah good shout. Silver is a fantastic song.

would you consider bands like silversun pickups or autolux more of present day shoegaze?

i enjoy both bands but don't really know if they would qualify

xX*Zeppelin*Xx 01-05-2009 07:15 PM

I think the list needs...
Pale Saints
Th' Faith Healers
Medicine
The Swirlies

also, a couple of those bands aren't really "shoegaze". but sure.

goldmember1217 01-05-2009 07:28 PM

You left out Ride you fool! :p:

Hammock should also be on there. And as said before, Jesu, Wolves absolutely owns my heart this week.

Anyways, I love shoegaze. So many rainy afternoons have been spent sitting there, staring out the window with shoegaze albums playing.

EDIT: The Autumns are another good (yet under-appreciated) shoegaze band you all need to listen to.

Yeah, I consider Silversun Pickups as modern shoegaze.

I'm not sure if that's how they're saw by most, but they have undeniable shoegaze influence, and their song structures are very much like MBV and Ride.

:)

I PMed philjay for Ride.

I guess I am like, third one...

I'd definitely add Ride to the list, one of the more obvious choices.

Rumskib's s/t and Have a Nice Life's "Deathconciousness" are definitely worth looking into as well.

I  shoegaze

fallenangel20 01-05-2009 08:27 PM

dminished: I have Deathconciousness now, but I have yet to listen to it.

I will definitely do so tonight.

dminishedthingy 01-05-2009 08:37 PM

You check out Pyramids' s/t yet?

philjay 01-05-2009 08:56 PM

Forgot Ride completely even though I have all their albums, same goes to Autolux and Silversun pickups.

Added the rest.

So much to listen to!

Keep them coming.

So to those of you who play shoegaze, or when you do: what do you use?
I was thinking of buying a reverb effects pedal and am looking into a good quality one without it being a tape reverb..
