The GB&C Quick Questions Thread

There are definitely alot of threads recently asking small questions... questions which don't need their own thread.

Which is why I made this thread, after search bar ing for a similar thread.

Invader Jim edit: This thread is about small questions too small for a new thread. You MUST post a question relating to something you need help with, or post an answer to a question that has been asked.

This thread is also ONLY FOR GB&C-RELATED QUESTIONS. Do not post questions irrelevant to this forum.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE RULES WILL RESULT IN A WARNING, WHICH WILL RESULT IN A BAN IF IT'S YOUR SECOND ACTIVE WARNING.

For links to many other great threads, check out the GB&C Central Hub.

I'll start:

I have made my template and gotten the necessary router bit to begin cutting my body with the router.

How do I go about securing the template to the body so that it does not slip? My dad has suggested nailing the template down, one nail hole in the neck pocket and one by the pickup area/bridge in an attempt to hide it. I can make my own pick guard if necessary, so that is an option as well.

C-clamps. gently tighten a C-lam down on it. This way you don't have to blemish the guitar's beautiful nature.

rancidryan 08-18-2009 02:39 PM

how about clamps?

and work around it bit by bit

2 nails might not hold it steady enough

oneblackened 08-18-2009 02:56 PM

I'll tell you how:

Double stick tape.

rancidryan 08-18-2009 06:17 PM

i think this thread would be useful and after a while we could use it to compile a large faq so i think it would be useful overall

however i reckon we should wait for jims or another mods words before we carry on.

Invader Jim 08-18-2009 06:24 PM

Personally, I think it's a good idea in principle.

However, human nature trumps this. It will just promote laziness, not reading the resources provided, basically make everything else moot. People will start asking questions that SHOULD go in an ultimate/only thread, and it'll generally cause me alot of headaches having to monitor it.

So in reality, I think it's a bad idea.

rancidryan 08-18-2009 06:28 PM

what about giving it a trial run?

if everyone who posts something that belongs in an ultimate thread were re direct them eventually it should work

Invader Jim 08-18-2009 06:33 PM

You know what? Let's try it.

If it gets out of hand, all I have to do is click a couple of links.

Trial Run it is.

Go.

the humanity 08-18-2009 06:46 PM

good man Jim, as easy to lock later as it is now, I'd assume.

spokeshave or drawknife?

go!

Jim can you prune all the B/S if this is going ahead then? and may be make a rule that you have to to quote the question you are answering, to ease confusion.

Jim and those who supported this:

Thanks for the support, guys. I just wanted to give everyone a place to... well... ask their small questions that don't really need a thread. I think if we link stuff which is already in the Ultimate Threads when someone asks about it, it'll turn out OK. This could be a great resource for people who have small questions.

Perhaps edit my TS post to link to the list of Ultimate Threads?

SYK and those who said I should've consulted a mod:

Learning experience, I guess... next time I will definitely consult a mod first, I was just trying to help out (and I also had a question which I did not want to start a thread for, so went about it in a roundabout way.)

I apologize for two questions of the same nature, but...

I will use the same clamps I used to clamp the body blank and neck, then. That'll work out ok, using as many as 5 clamps? I was thinking clamp it down over 3/4 of the shape and then cut the unclamped 1/3.

EDIT: And does anyone have a pickup routing template file?

I would try these first. Find at least 7 lumber yards near you and call them/send them an email asking if they carry Purple Heart.

If you cannot find anything, use eBay.

If you are opposed to eBay, I have a lumber yard 20ish minutes away which has purpleheart. If you send me the moneh, I will send you the purpleheart.

OP edited. TS, get the users to remove their own BS posts. I cbf to do it myself by hand. If they give you any shit, just tell them it's Jim's orders.

Anyone know any good, cheap locking tuners?

Little_Buster 08-18-2009 10:55 PM

Wilkison EZ-LOK tuners are great.
But they get annoying while your trying to string them.

I'm going to try the Wilinson EZ-Lock tuners on my build. Apparently they have two string holes drilled at 90* angles to one another, which locks the string?

I'm curious as to how they work, though. Approx. $25 USD on GFS

EDIT: Thanks for letting us know they work awesome. I will now 100% be getting them for my build.

Everyone who was involved in the first page: can you guys go back and delete your useless posts (i.e. those which id not answer questions)? Jim has asked you all to do it :)
