S&L - Lyric Discussion

This is in a testing phase. Please state any changes you may like in the comments

This thread is for the discussion of your favourite lyricists, poets and their work. You don't have to write a review or add links, but it would certainly be nice to see your favourite artists getting their asses kissed by S&L, just an ickle'!

You can talk about anything that you like, whether it be a Metal band or a rapper. Leaving links to Youtube/Myspace/Soundclick/etc. of the particular artists in discussion will be beneficial to us all, so don't be afraid to do so. Just please be mindful of the rules.

I thought I would do a review of former Genesis frontman and solo artist, Peter Gabriel, since I did claim him to be my most inspirational writer in the questionnaire for WotM June 2011.

One thing I enjoy about Gabriel's writing is his use of imagery. I love it when lyrics paint a picture, and songs like The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, The Carpet, and The Lamia show his ability to create scenery with words. Secondly, I enjoy his versatility in both tone and subject matter.

Some artists get caught up writing just one type of song, but not Gabriel. He's written Counting Out Time, a humorous number that deals with a youth using a sex manual to help him through his first encounter; the sniping Games Without Frontiers, a satire on the cold war; and of course, the classic In Your Eyes, a love song made famous by John Cusack holding up a boombox in Say Anything.

Lastly, I admire his ability to create characters. I Know What I Like, Back in N.Y.C., and Family Snapshot demonstrate how he's able to not only create characters, but bring us into their psyche as well. Overall, Peter Gabriel is an artist that I believe is worth checking out.

My review is of the Strange Famous Records owner Sage Francis, the fan-proclaimed 'Godfather of Underground Hip-Hop'. I have chosen to discuss his work because, since finding about him almost three years ago he has been the most important musical figure in my life.

I was introduced to Sage Francis with one of his most famous and controversial tracks, Escape Artist, which discusses the object of being a rapper and a Hip-Hop artist today, and compares it to the ups-and-downs of being a magician.

He delves deeper into that thought by comparing the commercialization of Hip-Hop with the line “When I first got into magic it was an underground phenomenon. Now everybodies like ‘pick a card, any card.” That, to me, speaks oceans since it relates to all forms of music, not just Hip-Hop.

The difficulty Sage Francis had with "the game" wasn't pretentious. He wasn't attempting to be different for different-sakes. He was simply in a world where artists were consumed by everything that wasn't music, and he wanted to get out of it. He began as a "monkey in a box" but eventually broke free and created Strange Famous Records, something that allowed him to openly express himself - and others, too.

Finally, further on his career, Sage Francis released my favourite song. One of, in fact, my favourite songs of all time, The Best of Times. Seeing it live was a tearful experience and something I'll always remember. I was two meters away from my hero as he stared at me, rapping his song as if it were mine - and I was his inspiration.

There isn't much to say about the song that it doesn't speak for itself already. It isn't cryptic or convoluted, detailed or long, it's just the history of my hero, lisp en all.

If you would like to have a critique posted in this post, send me a PM

dont know if we're supposed to comment or not. if not i'll delete this.

dear dan, you stole my artist. almost all i listen to these days is sage and sage remixes. one of my only thoughts on your ish is that I believe escape artist is singular. other thoughts:

Sage is the best in the game, past, present, future. You also forgot his storied spoken word/slam poetry/rap battle sagas from the late nineties up until today. he was the national slam poetry champ for god sakes!

AngryGoldfish 09-13-2011 06:02 PM

Oh yeah, you're right, it is singular. :haha

I was slightly worried people wouldn't know what to do. Hmmm... I think I should edit it and make the first part more obvious. Yay? Nay?

I didn't mention the spoken word battles because I just never really listened to them. I have Sage's entire collection of music, including a 1v1 and a couple of freestyles, but I haven't got round to listening to them yet. I'm still working through the EP's and the LP's.

Lyrics suck. Dialogue rules.

culex-knight 09-14-2011 03:54 AM

^ What?

And Sage is a champ.

AngryGoldfish 09-14-2011 08:56 AM

I thought you said Sage was a chump then. :p:

Write something about dialogue, Jake. ;)

Alright, here we go:

Thoughts on these lyrics. They are my new favourite band. Two Gallants.

The Trembling Of The Rose by Two Gallants
Why must it come to this
You disown me with a kiss
Another number on your list
Guess that's me

But old girl, what have I done
Another fool blind by the sun
Which way shall I run
Aimlessly

Look out moma, I can't see straight
Just woke up, it's getting late
And I'm as full of hate as I used to be

And in the hour my demise
I'll recall your empty eyes
You know I died the day you set me free

But what good is living for
When there's no knock on the door
No shelter from the war raging sea

If you comfort me till dawn
I'd sing your lonesome song
Pack my things, I'll be gone
Vagrantly

But with you high heels and your mace
You tell me I'm out of place
Rip my eyes out of my face
With these

And if I had one inch of pride
You took that too when you said goodbye
You know I died the day you set me free

Well I dreamt of you last night
And I woke to hate my life
Good God I'm sick of sight
Can't you see

But I must remain composed
Beneath the trembling of the rose
But you left me so exposed
Faithlessly

Who knows what is right or wrong
I'll paint your death and carry on
No I don't belong, that's plain to see

I guess I take your stress in stride
The hill is steep, the water's wide
You know I died the day you set me free

Ripping Corpse (death/thrash metal band) - Glorious Depravity from the album Dreaming with the Dead:

There's a house on a bleak New England lane
Standing in contempt of our disdain
Hidden beneath its aged floors
Lies a best forgotten door
That leads to

Decrepid steps, wretched depths
Deep horrors left unquestioned
Perverted forms in gleeful scorn
Of things human and reverential
Reptilian skins writhe in sin
Forsake humanity for beastiality
Sickening shapes, aberrations
Intensified by generations

Tongues flagellating, bodies undulating
In an orgy of glorious depravity
Perversions slithering, morals withering
In an orgy of glorious depravity

There's a house on a bleak New England lane
Standing in contempt of our disdain
Hidden beneath its aged floors
Lies a best well forgotten door

and

Cryptopsy (death metal band) - Slit Your Guts from the album None So Vile:

Pardon, please, the narrow
Confinement of your limbs;
Unfortunately, it's necessary
For your correction;
Shriek to your heart's
Content, if you wish;
I promise you pain and
Nightmares, in that sequence.

Permit me to introduce you to
"Tuesday"...
I favor her, this pretty blade
So tall and fine;
Hatred and violence are not
Our ways, but firm we are;
Squirming is useless, so is this
Colon, cry for me.

Svelte is implement,
Its gentle caress lets you Bleed;
its subtle curvature
Dancing, deeply slit your guts.

It's for your own good;
You need guidance, I provide;
What is your pleasure? This is
Mine; A welcome change!

[B]The Mars Volta: Asilos Magdalena:

Enfermo llegue
Y para componerme ando de vago
No me des tu obedencia

Yo no me quedo ...

Ya que caistes de este mundo
Cargo la navaja, Dios mio, para ti
Cuantas veces me mordistes
Y cuantas veces yo me fui
Ya no estoy enamorado
Con tus mentiras
El infierno me duermo
Porque el infierno es la unica verdad
En mi vida

El oscuro me mantiene
Cuando yo te vi
En la lluvia me prometistes tu sangre
Yo no me quedo en mi vida
El oscuro me mantiene
Cuando yo te vi
En la lluvia me prometistes tu sangre
Yo no me quedo ...

Estrella de la manana
Samael, te persigo a ti
Y si me quedo sin nada
Ademas me muero por ti

Estrella de la manana
Samael, te persigo a ti
Y si me quedo sin nada
Ademas me muero por ti

Estrella de la manana
Samael, te persigo a ti
Y si me quedo sin nada
Ademas me muero por ti

I love mars volta, (hence my username) it's "sin allas" (withouth wings), not "sin nada" without (without nothing).

i'll check the song soon, i didn't even know they had songs in spanish.

also, let's see how this thread goes!

i was writing something for that other thread in the techniques section about a prose poem i found enjoyable. it's originally in spanish so it might not work that well in english but yeah.

ah what the hell, here's more or less what i had going on: (not revised or anything)

edit: wait, actually, i'll write something+.

Alright so I know that the Chili Peppers are terribly hated on this site, but I absolutely adore these lyrics by them (this is an unreleased song and to some regions a B-side to 'californication') :

Quixoticelixer

Kick back a little bit just to watch and see
Getting sicker by the minute with debauchery
Whatever your pleasure I'm your punk
On the brink of sinking, baby, but not yet sunk
How I listened, lo’ when you told me
That I was all you had to hold
I wish it was so when you told me
That you were solid gold
Gravity-free is she, look at her
Highness on a mattress full of anti-matter
You never left a very mellow impression
Your smell, or your “go to hell” expression
Quixoticelixer might
But it will probably not fix your bite
Tell me now, tell me how
Did I your lipstick on my kite

I love this weather
It's a perfect storm
Just keep it coming
In its perfect form
I love this weather
'Cause it keeps me warm
Just keep it coming
In its perfect form

Everyday depression in a beautiful dress, oh
Lady made a beautiful mess I guess
Dedicated mind in a medicated state
Is a highly overrated fate
Terrible, is it so
What you told me there is such a thing
Did you know that you glow when you go
From winter into spring

I love this weather
It's a perfect storm
Just keep it coming
In its perfect form
I love this weather
'Cause it keeps me warm
Just keep it coming
In its perfect form

The madder the boy, the sadder the song
That's a wicked fate but the sick get strong
Mad boy, sad song
A wicked fate, but the sick get strong
Nobody's right and everyone's wrong
I refuse to punt on fourth and long
Mad boy, sad song
Wicked fate but the sick get...

Kick back a little bit just to watch and see
Getting sicker by the minute with debauchery
Whatever your pleasure I'm your punk
On the brink of sinkin’, baby, but not yet sunk
How I listened, lo’ when you told me
That I was all you had to hold
I wish it were so when you told me
That you were solid gold

I swear to god I could not hurt you
I've got to be inside your virtue
I can't contain my urge to search you

I stand before you there's no curfew
I long to be inside your virtue
My heart is swollen when I search you

I swear to god I could not hurt you
My heart is swollen when I search you
I swear to god I could not hurt you

I swear to god I could not hurt you
I've got to be inside your virtue
I can't contain my urge to search you

I've always liked Chili Pepper's lyrics. I mean, they're sometimes a bit silly and don't seem to make any sense, but at least the majority of them are intelligible and honest.

Dirk Gently 09-19-2011 09:07 AM

Right now, I have two favorite lyricists kicking around inside my head and constantly running through my iPod -- Ryan Adams and Tom Waits. Although I haven't been enjoying more recent endeavors as much as his earlier stuff, and his quantity of output sometimes affects the quality, Ryan Adams has moments of sheer brilliance that leave me dumbstruck. And what I like about his music is that it's nothing pretentious, just simple, raw honesty that I relate to on a subliminal level. For example, every time I'm traveling and feeling the slightest bit homesick or lonely, I'll sing "Oh My Sweet Carolina" to myself without even thinking about it.

Up here in the city, feels like things are closing in
My sunset's just a lightbulb burning out
I miss Kentucky and I miss my family
Oh the sweetest winds, they blow across the South.

Another one that always comes to mind is the song "Nightbirds" from the album 29:

I feel like a body stuffed into a trunk
From a million years of lyin' and gettin' drunk
These people here inside me, they're loud and in the night
They scream and smash the windows when they fight

When I'm really depressed, there's "Peaceful Valley":

Lord take me home to the Peaceful Valley
Down the winding rivers to the City of Souls
I've grown so tired and my heart's too heavy
To walk any longer to your Cities of Gold

All my life I have longed for forgiveness
But I can never seem to get enough
All my life I've been rocked into the darkness
With a gun to my head
Trying to find a peaceful song
To sing when everything goes wrong
'Til the Peaceful Valley calls me home

As far as Tom Waits goes, he's a guy who really needs no discussion regarding brilliance. I've been listening to Small Change a lot lately, along with Rain Dogs and Heartattack & Vine (primarily for "Jersey Girl," but that's a story I'm keeping to myself).

I would do media links, but such sites are blocked at work.

You asked an electrician if he'd seen me 'round his place,
He touched you with his fingers and sent sparks zapping out your face.
You saw a doctor to get some advice,
He shot you full of Pethidine then went and billed you twice.

rjaylaf 09-21-2011 01:19 AM

Tim Mcillrath of Rise Against i have no idea how he thinks of his lyrics.
And on that day they'll tell you
That life hung on with no clue
The warning signs were all just
Missed or shattered down, so it goes
Endgame- Rise Against

The kings all failed to tell us
The madmen failed to sell us
Of what would then befall
The only life we know

When they're burning signal fires
To guide us to the fields
We're building funeral pyres
They all commit a final appeal

The city lines are down
The kerosene's run out
The fact surreal, oh, we relied upon
I shed the sun clean skin
And start to feel again
'Cause all the shoulders, I wish to cry on are gone

The paranoia gripped us
Berate and then consume us
The panic set in like a cancer to our hearts
Spreading through

We've been on fire like genius
I pray for god to save us
There was no answer, though
Disease tore us apart
[ From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/r/rise-...ame-lyrics.html ]

We left bodies in the fields
So numb that we forgot how to feel

The city lines are down
The kerosene's run out
The fact surreal, oh, we relied upon
I shed the sun clean skin
And start to feel again
'Cause all the shoulders, I wish to cry on are gone

He looked at the fields and then his hands
All I need is what I have
Then fell a tear of happiness, oh, oh, oh, oh

She watched it all crumble away
Is this the end of yesterday?
"Lord, I hope so" is all he said

All I've got are the organs
Got all the cold, cold wars
And as we go forth
I pray we'll remember this day

Oh, we relied on now

The city lines are down
The kerosene's run out
The fact surreal, oh, we relied upon
I shed the sun clean skin
And start to feel again
With no more shoulders, shoulders to cry on now

No more, no more
No more, no more, no more, no more
The weight that we once felt is gone

Biffy Clyro - With Aplomb

Absolutely one of my favorite songs. The lyrics are creative and vague, and the musical buildup halfway through the song is simply epic. Hope some of you enjoy it as much as I do.

Lyrics:

Fix my new memory with a cold naked stare,
chew up the words but with floods beware.
Fondness can escalate beyond my repair,
chance is the fiction will orchestrate despair.

Again,
these hands blow dry
but I can handle it again,
these words collide
but I can handle.

Happiness is coated in a mindless kicking,
let's fall apart, get up high and leave.

Again,
these hands blow dry
but I can handle it again,
these words collide
but I can handle.

Kill your bizarre mindset, ****head,
soldered to a three-layered concrete
brainwave castration.

Walking backwards home with you.
