Noise gate question...probably gonna get bashed but I'll ask....
 

So I wanted to know if you can place a noise gate between a speaker and it's source. I have a Fender Blues jr with a Celestion Vintage 30 and I am trying to cutdown the white noise when I'm not actually playing. This situation is with no pedals in the equation.

I think you want the noise gate in your FX Loop, if the Blues Jr. has one.

The blues jr does not have an fx loop.

Volume on guitar is down...wouldn't a volume pedal do the same as my guitar knob? That's why I thought a noise gate but again between the speaker and it's source rather than the pedal upfront.

and noise gate in front of the amp would be the same thing as either of those. but yes, guitar volume would be roughly the same as volume pedal. the volume pedal would be more convenient, but still won't take out the hiss when not playing.



you don't have the option of running anything conventional between your amp and speaker. you'd want to run a pedal between the preamp and your power amp. but since the blues jr has no effects loop then you are kinda SOL.

these pretty leaves the only option of running a noise gate before the input of the amp. you will still get hiss.

Can't think of anything. I have a gate in my effects loop for this exact purpose (to silence the preamp) and it's dead silent. To put it before your speaker only would require something that can handle big wattage. The only devices I know of that can are attenuators, but those would not help with your problem. You aren't really getting _that much_ noise with such a low gain amp are you?
