Need help chosing a guitar

So as I mentioned in the New Members thread, my name's Stefan, I'm 15, and I wanna start learning how to play the guitar. Now, since I live in a very poor and stupid country, there's not much choice.
Choice No.1: Un-used Better Dreadnought cutaway model.

Why I wanna buy this guitar?
The Price is 90 US Dollars! It has D'addario strings and chrome plated tuners!
Why I don't wanna buy this guitar?
The guy has advertised the guitar as "Dreadnought" model but it seems a lot like Jumbo one to me. Can you tell me which body form this guitar have?

Choise No.2: Used Power Les Paul

Why I wanna buy this one?
Because It's 120 USD, It's Electric-Acoustic, and the design looks cool! Kind of Slash-y!
Why I don't wanna buy this one?
When you google Power Les Paul, basically there's nothing? What the hell is Power Les Paul? I know about Gibson Les Paul, which happens to be my favorite guitar model but Power Les Paul? Is this some chinesse sh*t ??

Choise No.3: Squier SA-105 Black

This guitar seems like a bad choice to me. I really prefer guitars with cutout. But on the other hand, it's brand new! And plus, it's freakin' black! And then again, I saw some people complain online about the tuners of this guitar!

I'm sorry I give you guys a hard time, I wanna start learning so BAD, I have no intentions of creating a band and becoming a rock star, but I wanna play in my bedroom you know, I just enjoy guitar sound! Can you judge a guitars by its looks? Please state which one looks the best options from those 3, and please don't post links to do online shopping because shipping isn't available to my country.

\m/
Stefan.

Can some moderator move the thread so I don't do spam?

whoomit 09-30-2012 01:56 PM

You can press the 'Edit' button and use the Delete section, tick 'Physically remove this message' and you're sorted

Deleting the OP deletes the thread.

Are you able to play the guitars? I'd pick between 1 and 2, but nothing can be said without playing them. Pictures are not worth a thousand words in this case.

OK, Stefan, welcome to UG. :)

Now, a couple of points from your first post. Anything in the price range you're looking at, is going to be, "cheap Chinese shit". No getting around that.

Nobody in the EU, or America can produce a decent guitar at anywhere near that price point, and still have it be playable. Simple issue of worker's wages, nothing more.

"Power Les Paul", sounds like a straight up trade mark infringement.

There's no doubt whatsoever in my mind, that instrument has absolutely nothing to do with the Gibson corporation or its affiliates.

It does however, have a logo on the headstock. Is there anyway you can trace that to the "manufacturer". Since"Power Les Paul" sounds more like a model name than a maker's name.

In lower price guitars, there's possibly more of a quality control difference between individual instruments than there would be in a higher price bracket.

That said, by far the best approach is to take someone knowledgeable with you, and test the specific instrument you will be buying. That would help determine if the neck is on at the right angle, the frets are in the right place to intonate properly, and whether the guitar will be able to be, "setup" successfully. (By "setup", I mean have the truss rod adjusted to spec, and the string height be brought to a playable level)).

Which country do you live in, if you don't mind me asking?

I live in Macedonia. And I got one of my classmates to help me choosing the right guitar (he's got 3 years experience). I'll be buying one this friday, so I'll post which one I bought. Thank you for your help!

These guitars seemed to be quite good to me. If you're a beginner then any guitar of these will be good to you. After some time when your skills will grow, you will always be able to sell it to another beginner. Choose the one you like the best:)

If your can get a basic Yamaha guitar (what I have) you'll be set it has a nice sound and easy to pick up and go!

Hi Stefan,

For me, the large guitars are very hard to play and very uncomfortable. I have had the dreadnaught size and really did not like it. Now I play the Grand Concert size, which I think Martin calls a 00 size. It's really nice... only 3.5 inches thick at the neck, instead of about 5 inches.

I can't tell you exactly what guitar to get but I will just recommend that you get a nice comfortable small body one.

Best of luck !

Jean

In your first paragraph you mention it's personal preference (good) then in your concluding sentence you recommend a smaller body b/c they are comfortable (bad).

It's all personal preference. Smaller bodies are not always more comfortable. Smaller body guitars actually put more strain on my shoulder b/c I can't keep my shoulders back. The dreadnaught shape is comfortable more many people.

But since you just joined TODAY, you wouldn't know where it was before, now would you? Is there anything else you'd like to straighten us out about?

stepchildusmc 10-23-2012 08:31 PM

no, this thread is no longer here. it's a simple case of guitar lacquer asphyxiation. your getting high on the thought of a new guitar. its making you see things!
and since i'm not here voicing my choice of # 3( cool freakin' black one!) you'll never know that i would choose that one of the three. A - its a new one, B - its from a trusted name, C - warranty, D - it doesn't say "power Les Paul" on it - cranky's right, it's a cheap knockoff of a cheap knockoff.
chances are that you won't be able to utilize a cutaway body or need an amplifier just yet.
personally, i think your in the right part of the forum....it's an acoustic guitar question that you pose to us all wise and knowing sages of the 6-string(...mahemm...hmmph...hmmph.. boolshitsky.... sorry, i have a cold)
and welcome to UG by the way. this a great site where you can learn much. this site teamed with Justinguitar.com and youtube and in 6 months you'll be a better player than Lawrence Welk !

Although I have to say this part:

.mahemm...hmmph...hmmph..
sounds more reminiscent of Yiddish....

stepchildusmc 10-23-2012 08:48 PM

nah, thankfully English( actually the US dollar is) is the preferred language there. and they take Paypal !.... not that i would know mind you. and i was always told that if i'm looking at capture in western russia, eat the evidence and never let them take you alive !( inflate-a-dates are actually better with a little ketchup).

Maybe yeah, if you saved up for a bit more. You could get a Yamaha F310. IMO it's a really good starter guitar!
