Need Help with Auto-muting

I have a project at school where I have to come up with a new invention. I was thinking of a cheap way for auto-muting but I don't know if it exists or not. Does anyone know if there is a cheap way to auto-mute?

A noise gate? A choppy tremolo? A killswitch? Hard to know what you mean by "auto-mute" but I think one of the three should fill your requirement.

I'm using the Moog E1 guitar as a starting point. It has an auto-mute setting but it's $2000. I need to make a cost-effective way to do the same thing.

Make a pedal with a temoprary switch you hold down with your foot (so more of a pedal)and when you take your foot off VIOLA! auto mute.

not too sure what you mean by an auto mute.

Is there anything cheap on the market? I have an idea of a rubber-edged guitar pick but I still need to do research and concept testing.

You don't make any sense. Explain to us what you want to do, what you mean by auto-mute, and how a rubber pick comes in to play.

i think he might be talking about something that will kill the guitar's sustain. but i am unsure.

i have seen people people use stuff like this to kill the sustain on stringed instruments

they may also use something near the nut when they do slapping or tapping alot

but i am not sure.

Yes, thank you. What I mean by auto-mute is killing the sustain. I need to find some way to kill the sustain but be able to do it cheap and not steal something that already exists on the market.

Gumbi pretty much laid it out for you. Its not really a new invention though...

those approaches were quite literally just using random foam and shoving it under the fretboard. there are many different designs for it that people actually sell, make your own that is ergonomic or convenient or more versatile (like a mute that drops down so you can play muted or unmuted)

That's not a bad idea. Thanks gumbi

I like this idea, a pedal killswitch. Never seen a legit one, though I've used my tuner in the past to kill sound.

EHX makes a killswitch in pedal form.

Yep. It's momentary, and can be used as a line selector too. It looks pretty cool for only $50.
