Tube head recommendations.

I'm looking for a tube head. I'm playing stuff mostly in the style of Skillet, Shinedown, Breaking Benjamin, Godsmack, you get the idea. Personnally, my favorite tone is a Mesa Dual Rec, but I can't afford it. I've been recomended alternatives, like B-52 ATX100, Bugera 333, used Peavey XXX. The thing is I recently built myself a cab, and its a 60watter. So i need some different alternatives, whose watts will match my cab. I'm open to used, but theres not much around here, except a Marshall Haze 15. And I live near Montreal, so Guitar Center used isn't an option. Budget is between 300 and 500. I noticed the Randall RT50H, Marshall Haze, and a JCA22H., bt I dodn't really liked it after trying it. Any other ideas.

Used Egnater Rebel?

Honestly, you're not going to get anywhere close to those tones with an open-back, 1x12 cab

You're also not going to get the Mesa tone those guys use, without buying a Rectifier, the only amp that really gets close, is more expensive than a Recto (Bogner Uberschall).

That being said, the JCA 50H is a pretty awesome amp for the price. You could also buy at 100w amp and pull two power tubes to run it at half power (just remember to compensate for it on the impedance).

I'd say that JCA is a good option but I've only played the 20 wattr.

You do know that there is a 60 watt XXX, JSX and I thought B52 tube combos? IIRC

Not sure if you can pull tubes and run at half power on the 120w XXX and 333.

I'd also look at a Vypyr 60

You can get a Peavey Valveking 100 watt all tube head on Ebay for $300 shipped. That amp is plenty loud and capable of getting distorted tones along the lines of Godsmack. Solid, dependable and more than enough for what you need.

Another option would be the Peavey XXL transtube head.
That one has alot more versatility in tone options from clean to metal. Not tube but sounds damn close and some like it better than an XXX.

So I can convert a 120w or 100w to half the power just by pulling out half the power tubes? Interesting. How do I commpensate with impedance?

311ZOSOVHJH 10-03-2012 08:52 PM

^ you can't do that on all amps - you'd have to consult the user manual or with the manufacturer

but typically you would then cut the impedance in half

i do that with my Splawn

Valvekings are decent. Have a look at Traynors, they're Canadian right?

I think Zach from Shinedown uses a Bogner Alchemist, they're around $400-$600 used and would do what you want nicely. He uses some other amp as well...can't remember it right now.

I don't know what the Godsmack guy uses.

The Godsmack guy uses Splawn now I believe coincidentally enough. :haha

Offworld92 10-04-2012 12:21 AM

@311 doesn't the Splawn just have a half power switch? Or do some of them not?

@TS for that kind of music, you want headroom. As MatrixClaw said, a 60W open back cab isn't really going to do anything food for you for what you want to do.

I say just try to find a Peavey JSX combo. I can dial in some pretty good alt metal tones on mine.

Same with my Budda. Mike told me to pull the inside two and cut the impedence in half (the inner two to keep the outer two cooler, nothing technical).

Just make sure you dont pull them out with your bare hands, use a lint free cloth.

For what it is worth.

The 100 watt Splawns (pentode/triode) have a half power switch. You technically do not have to pull 2 of the 4 tubes to run at half power in a Splawn. You do always cut the impedance. So my amp is set to 4 ohms where normally I would be at 8. Scott Splawn recommends pulling the 2 outer power tubes and rebiasing the amp if you are going to run at half power all the time. Saves on tube costs for one.

Not all amps operate exactly like that. Like in Nick's (cdr salamander) case, he was told to pull the inner 2 tubes. And in some rare amps the pairs are next to each other so the left 2 or the right 2. If you only have 2 power tubes to start with you can't pull and cut in half like that. In a Class A/B amp the power tubes work in pairs.

I see you have a cab build going. What is that all about? You can always sell the 60watt cab you have now. I wouldn't buy a cab anyway until the amp part was figured out. You could also try closing the back up on it. Personally, I'd just start over so you are not limited like that.

My Vpyr 60 is open back is pretty damn tight. I am assuming an open back cab would sound good connected to it but I could be wrong. Normally I suggest a closed back 2x12.

Bump!
Just bidded on a 120w. I checked with the company and they said that reducing the power by half by pulling out half the tubes would work. Can it do any harm to the amp? And I just divide the impendance by two? Say I want 8 ohm, I select 16ohm?

ihartfood 11-04-2012 05:10 PM

120 watt what?

n1ckn1ce 11-04-2012 06:47 PM

Bugera 333XL

No if you want 8ohms and pull 2 tubes, you need to select 4ohms ;)

Robbgnarly 11-04-2012 07:03 PM

Bugeras are a diecent first amp, I have a 333 I bought 3 yrs ago. You'll end up wanting a better amp in the next 1-2yrs. Hopefuly you dont have any issues with it.
