24th note on a 22 fret guitar
 

Is that even possible? I made a huge mistake of buying this guitar a year ago and now I've branched out into different genres and some songs need the 24/23 fret. Anything I can do? Oh and I can't buy a new guitar that's totally not an option.

I'm trying to learn Metallica's The Day That Never Comes solo and there's a part when you have to start from the 24th fret and run it down. Is there anyway I could make a modification to that part of the solo and make it sound ok?

Bending?

as long as it's not on the high E string you can just find the note on the next highest string. You could also try prebending to it but that's really tricky to pull off.

I guess you could find a harmony or play the note an octave down.

If it's on the high E string a full bend on the 22nd fret will equal the 24th fret. But if the song has a bend on the 24th fret, then you'll have a hard time bending enough to get that pitch (and risk breaking your string.)

If it is just a fast lick involving the 24th fret then you could probably get away with just picking on the 22nd fret in place of it and not worry about it.

Yes. It's a totally normal one step bend.

Play a natural harmonic where the 24th fret would normally be. Sounds exactly the same, feels a little weird but it sounds the same.

You could also fret off your pic up depending on the guitar you have, you may get the same not off of it.

As has been mentioned you may sometimes be able do a bend or a natural harmonic to get the same note as the 24th fret. However in a fast run like this, it's not really practical so you're just gonna have play different notes there. Try to come up with some re-arrangement of it to fit your guitar, it'll be a good exercise.

That should be no problem unless your strings are shit and need to be replaced.

You could also do it with harmonics. I came across this a while ago when I first started. I needed to bend the 24th fret up a whole step but I only had 22 frets so I just played a natural harmonic at the 5th fret and bent it with the tremolo bar.

Yes this. I just very lightly touch the string at theoretical 24th with pinky and it sounds good. Does the trick if you're just throwing in a couple fast ones. You can't do much like vibrato but just for the note it's great

Pre bend the 22nd. And dude, whole step bends are nothing. Today I was bending cray on my old strings, and it was so deep and soulful and they didn't break.

Yeah thanks for all this. The natural harmonic at the imaginary 24 fret did help sounds decent.

This is why I don't mess with less than 24 frets anymore. It's very frustrating, especially when you need to do a sweep with a tap on the 24th fret.

with 22 fret guitar necks, the harmonic rests nicely over the neck pickups sweet spot sometimes, sounds ravishing.

best solution? BUY A NEW GUITAR. Yes kid, it is an option.
