Learn the names of the guitar strings. Learn how to tune your guitar. Start off with learning chords.

Wrong forum, but learn the notes on the strings, how to tune, open chords, songs with open chords, then barre chords. Start learning songs and then start learning theory. That way you will enjoy it more.

Technique. Can't stress it enough. Make sure hands (left hand especially) are as correct as you can make them.

I am playing guitar for six years and i have learned a big secret rule..

## PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE ##

Practice your fav song, fav solo, a music from the tv add, your mobile ringtone. Practice whatever you like, even if you cant play it well. Practice will make you great..

No shit.

OT: You want to ask this in the Guitar Techniques forum. I will tell you, however, that learning proper picking technique, finger independence, learning songs by ear, and practicing each song or riff very slowly with a metronome are pretty much the best ways to go about it, and to understand some basic theory.

These two places are a good start. You can learn a lot if you dig around.

Another good idea is to try befriending a musician or two, or taking some classes on music/guitar. Learning theory is always helpful as it will help you understand. And don't rush into it. Take your time and develop your technique/playing style and perfect it. Anyone can learn to bash some strings for a few minutes and call it a day, but it takes patience to get muscle memory down and it will seem repetitive at times but it will definitely benefit you in the long run, regardless of what style of music you choose to play. :)

Practice makes perfect. While this applies to everything in life, it couldn't be more important with the guitar. As TheUltimateSin said above; muscle memory is the key, it will be frustrating at first but it gets easier.

I was guilty of owning a guitar for about 4 years (for a total playing time of about 3 days) and not being dedicated, I regret that now. When I finally got off my arse and thought about doing it properly I did things like when sitting in front of the TV and playing.
I grabbed the guitar and played the same chord over and over and over while watching a movie etc...picking it, strumming etc whatever it took until I could comfortably move around the neck and easily create the chord shape again, then moved on to another chord. It worked for me.
