Ibanez fans - Help me decide between a pair of old Roadstars

I'm basically stuck between an early RG440 and an RS530 I've found. The 530 has a beautiful flamed blue/green burst. I already own a 530 and the neck is the best I've personally ever experienced, so very tempted to grab this other one.

But there's also an RG440 come up. I've never seen one of these in the flesh but I have read a lot of good things.

I plan on fitting my own pickups to whichever I buy.

Any opinions?

Nobody?

That's a tough one. I too have an old 1986 RG530. It's the pearl wineburst color. I wish I could find one in the blue you have. Other than the painted neck, which I'm not overly fond of, it's one of the best playing guitars I own. The original Edge tremolo is still flawless. I'm quite partial to it now. It looks like the RG440 often came with an edge as well. I'd be careful on that aspect. Anything earlier than 85 or 86 will probably have the crappy old ProRocker bridge. That could be a deciding factor for you.

Let me know if you need any input on the mods. I've reworked a lot of mine. I have a set of Bill and Becky L500s in it. now.

If you already own a 530, wouldn't make sense to get a different model?

JayCartay 11-01-2012 12:26 PM

Well I have one that I love, but I want a couple of specific pickups in an alternative guitar, i.e. I don't want to change anything with mine, but if I could have another guitar that feels as nice, but gives me different sound options, I'd be very happy with that I think.

I just don't want to miss out on what might be a gem of a guitar by staying with what I know, if that makes sense?

This is the RG440:

This is the RS530:

To me the RG530 is the better looking guitar. The RG440 may be a bit more versatile though since it has a 3 pickup configuration. The RG530 does have coil splitting built in but you still can't get quite the same sound as you can with actual three pickups and real single coils.

Here's what I've done to mine.

Will take a look at yours now. Any idea how the two necks compare? I love the RS530 neck.

Well, in that case, the RS530 just because you already know you like it.

I get where you're coming from. I have an RG770DX that I am crazy about, and even though I'm always tempted to tryout different pickups or even set it up differently, I'm too happy with it to change a thing. It would be great to have another one that I could mess with.

had a 530 back in the day and it was a fine guitar. actually i kinda miss it. the trem stayed in tune fairly well and the pickups weren't bad. fast neck.

I know a lot of people that have multiple of the same kind of guitar. Nothing wrong with that! If you like the neck on the 530 then I say go for it. Swap the pickups for a different sound than your current 530 and you're good to go!

FenrirFangs 11-01-2012 11:01 PM

I would take the 530 any day. And I'm basing that completely on the paintjob. What can I say, I like attention?

JayCartay 11-02-2012 05:52 AM

Well on one of the Ibanez sites somebody mentioned that the Edge bridge on the RG440 has much superior sustain tot he one on the RS530, and that they have the same neck. I'm now leaning the other way. I think I'm going to have the RG, and seehow it goes. If the neck is the same then really, it's problem solved and another model of Roadstar to add to my existing two.

The 530 IS better looking though :D

innertom 11-02-2012 06:02 AM

The finish on the 530 looks so pretty :D that being said I don't know shit about either of them.
Is there any chance you could get to play them then decide?

JayCartay 11-02-2012 06:43 AM

No, unfortunately not. They're both over 200 miles away.

JayCartay 11-02-2012 11:09 AM

Need to hurry up and buy one as I've just seen something else.....

Sorry for being a ****** guys!

I've just laid eyes on a neck through RG..... very cheap. It's Korean made though which puts me off, and I have no idea if the neckw ill be as nice as the Roadstars' necks.... but damn, it's a neck thru!!

Jesus I am losing my mind now.....

poppameth 11-02-2012 12:06 PM

The pics are kind of blurry but I'm guessing the 530 has a LoPro Edge from the look of it. Mine has an original Edge. I'm never had the opportunity to play a LoPro, but both are suppose to be very good.

I have a late 90s Korean RG270DX and the neck feels great on it. Other things have needed more work to get right though. The body and neck have been on par with Japanese models though. Electronics have all had to go and it needed a good crown and level on the frets. To this day I still play it more than my US Strat Plus.

JayCartay 11-02-2012 12:38 PM

Happy to do the electronics TBH. This one is beat up and needs work all over. It's just the fact it's a neck-thru makes it a little bit special, at least to me.

What a curve ball!

poppameth 11-02-2012 02:30 PM

That's the one issue I have with the 530. I have small hands and it has a square neck joint. So both that one and my strat are a little less comfortable to play. The 270 has an AANJ so it feels almost like a neck through. Honestly, I've never seen any major benefit to a neck through. The sustain has never seemed any different to me and it's harder to fix if something were to happen to either the neck or body.
