Watch between 1000-2000 AUstralian Dollars

Hi forum

Anyways, it's my dads 50th in 2 and a half weeks time and i decided the family should get him a nice watch to celebrate this milestone. He's always had a watch fetish and i think being the man he is, deserves one. Only problem is he can be a bit picky so i need some models as i'm not as much of a watch expert myself. these are the things he looks for

- large clear numbers on the face
- backlight or illuminating numbers for night reading
- Date and time
- Something modern looking, so not really a traditonal patel-esque watch/conservative
- Metal strap, he's not a fan of leather
- Something which doesn't lose time alot, he had a Seiko that lost about 30 seconds a day which really annoyed him
- Waterproof

Atm he uses a high end Casio Protrek because of its toughness and it's packed with stuff although i want to get him something analog or something analog (i personally would never go near a digital watch). He's been into the Tissots lately but i want to know if there's anything similar from other brands e.g. Tag-Heur etc so if you guys if any models worth checking out. thanks for your help. So if any guitarists with a watch fetish could help me out, would be great

SIDE NOTE: if anyone knows any stores that stock a wide variety of watches at this level in the sydney area, please list them, also trustworthy websites, if anyone knows any that ship to Australia, please comment

Why can't your dad be like a normal man and have a A2M fetish..... that would have been the best present you could have give him!

Tag-Heuer because Lewis Hamilton approves

But yeah stalk his computer search history and see which watch he's been searching for the most, and while you're at it, see what kinda dirty old man porn he watches.

Watches of Switzerland. Go there. I also disagree with this idea

Agreed, it would be a good idea if he wasn't extremely picky though.

An awesome watch is more a young man gift though, but not a bad choice for a 50th

Yea, I dunno, through my own and others experience I find that when you're getting an expensive watch for a meaningful milestone, the watch kinda chooses you rather than you choosing the watch. Having someone pick it for me would be weird imo

Yeah definitely, my dad gave me a budget when I graduated and I picked my own. Literally looked at over 100 watches and only found 2 that I REALLY liked.

Buying for someone else is definitely going to be risky.

I see where you're getting at and for some people, it definitely would be that way. I think i know my dad well enough. It's a long really boring explanation, so i'm not going to bother, but doing this isn't the wrong thing

Diamond Dave 11-08-2012 05:42 AM

Well you've got two options really, something elegant and versatile, or a bitchin chronograph

whoomit 11-08-2012 05:43 AM

that's a lot on a watch get him a 20 ben sherman hell like it

jambi_mantra 11-08-2012 05:53 AM

It's about 4x your budget, doesn't fit half the criteria but

See this is the issue with buying watches, that's an epic piece of kit but at the same time I don't like the look much at all :haha:
