Slash's weird technique on Civil War

Hey guys

Got a qn stuck in my mind for awhile. Tried to search but seems that I cant really find a good ans, I dont even know if Im describing it correctly.

As you would have notice if your a GnR fan, Slash does a very weird move in the song Civil War. Heres how it looks like.

From what I hear, it does like lowering the pitch of the chord and gives a loww booing sound. I want to know what is this technique called? Can anybody help me?

Thx in advance!

From what I can see, I assume he's pushing on the back of the neck so that the note is bent slightly. I'm not too sure though, do you have a video link instead?

That is what I believe is called a neck bend. Basically you force the neck to bend which creates a similar lowering in pitch as using a tremolo bar would. If you have a hardtail bridge that's pretty much the only way to do that.

I'm not sure what the long term effects of this will be on the guitar.

Long term effect:

Its just like anything else, if you grab and shake it back and forth enough it'll eventually break.

Yeah, I think he was rehearsing with either Kravitz or MJ once and he used this technique and actually snapped the neck clean in half on his original 'AFD' 59 replica, glad to see it didn't stop him doing it.

He's pushing on the back off the neck and pushing down on the front of his guitar to bend the neck slightly and bend the note.

True story, but it was fixed. His first Gibson signature guitar was made to look like it had been cracked in the same place. Fun fact for the day.
