High output humbucker

So I am deciding to put a new humbucker into my superstrat. What would be the nastiest pickup I could get? Looking for something with huge output, thick sound for punk/metal. i have an offer for DiMarzio DP220 D Activator, but I am also looking at other possibilities like the X2N. Any suggestions?

There's a thousand options. Really.

EMG's?

Burstbucker 3 have a nice edgy sound. Don't know what price range you are pursuing though..

I would prefer passive, don't want to modify half of the guitar ATM. My price range is like max. 80 so I guess something from SD or Dimarzio.

Try www.dragonfireguitars.com if you want some cheap + awesome pick ups. I got a set from there last year, and I loved them.

i wouldn't go for output to the exclusion of everything else. with a modern high gain amp, even a medium hot pickup can bring teh brootz.

that's not to say a hot pickup might not sound exactly the way you want, of course.

Lace has some good options, like the Matt Pike Dirty Hesher.

I'd also check out HBs from Bareknuckle and Tesla.

Bill and Becky L500XL? Cheap, extremely good, and very high output. However, I agree that you don't want to focus too much on output of the pickup. In general I get better sound out of a good medium output pickup that a high output. More isn't always better.

I got some IronGear pickups a while ago (search my review on them in GGA&A, if you like).
They're cheap and good quality, especiialy for what you pay for them. Consider them. Either the Hammer Head or the Steam Hammer should do fine for high gain stuff.

Hunt for Used CrunchLab (bridge) + The Breed (neck). :)

Seriously. Don't know why everyone's like "NEED SO MUCH DISTORTION".

I really like doing what Misha Mansoor does; turn down the gain and get a lot of distortion from my hard attack.

don't get me wrong- i mean i like high output pickups too. but when i like them it's normally more because of their eq etc. than their output. i'm not saying not to get a high output pickup- i'm saying not to start out by saying, "what's the highest output pickup you sell!".

granted, you probably shouldn't be looking at pafs.

+1

I got an SD Custom partially because of how much people say moderate output pups are better if you have a high gain amp anyway. Turns out it's not hot enough for my tastes. Pickups are highly individual. You have to try a few with different amps before you can start to figure out what works for you.

yeah. kinda need to be careful people don't take what you're saying as a black-and-white rule when that's not what you mean :haha

Looks interesting, some cool pickups there and I can spot a sexy black hardtail bridge for my Strat. But the website seems a bit dodgy, not sure if I can trust.

I've heard Dragonfire were pretty meh. I wouldn't bother when you could go with GFS instead. They're much more known and trusted.

I had the PHAT Screamers from memory (sold my guitar ages ago), and I really liked them. I guess it depends on the sound/gear you're using.

The other advantage being that the higher outputs give you a little more range with the volume pot.

Some guys would rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. :D
