Having guitarists's block.

Hi. Just a self intro, been playing the guitar for about 5 years now.

Used to have a teacher for the first year then I quit because of certain issues.

Kinda regretted it, because in the years without my teacher I did not make significant improvements. To be honest, I'm not able to play any song in complete at all.

Been stuck at my level for quite some time now and I'm unsure of how to break out of this monotony.

I wouldn't say that I'm unmotivated to practice, it's just that there's so many lessons out there and I don't know which direction to go. I focused on improvisation, pentatonic scales, speed and accuracy, etc.

But I do know that my current goal is to be a soloist, and I enjoy the works of Slash. I hope to be able to play solos that are as captivating as his.

Do any kind souls out there have any advice?

Becoming a soloist is a long term goal.
Set yourself some short-term goals.

Maybe you should play in a band. I play in one right now, and it gives me a huge boost of motivation. We are playing "tornado of souls" by megadeth, and i really want to nail that solo.

You also could upload vids on YouTube, because that really forces you to learn a song completely, or else the haters will kill you in the comments.

You'd be surprised how much you'd learn in a band. I'm in a garage band now (we just started doing gigs recently) and it was basically up to me to keep Comfortably Numb from going to shit and disgracing the original. We got great reactions, and not just from yes men.
