Like what's the "theory" behind it, other than effects? I've been listening to a ton eof my bloody valentine and slowdive lately. With slowdive I can identify sus2 chords every now and then but that's really it. Any help would be appreciated. Whrnever I write its usually basic major scales.

you'll notice people who know theory never ask "what's the theory behind this?"

there's not a secret to it. learn the music. figure out what they do. do that. figure out how to take that and make it your own.

I couldn't think of a better word lol. What's a drone? Would it be like playing a g shape on the 8th fret but leaving the 3rd and 4th strings open?

A drone is a repeated note/chord under a melody or chord progression. Most often a drone will be on the root note of a chord or tonic note of a key. For example, if you were in E major, you would sustain an E note or E major chord under everything else that goes on.

However, a drone doesn't have to be the root note, it's very often the "in-between notes" like your example.
