Amp recommendations
 

I've got a Marshall JVM 410 combo and I've realized that it's too damn loud and heavy. Does anyone have any recommendations for a head/cab combination that will hit an early Van Halen sound with a little Extra to go but also gets a near-clean sound? I play glam rock/metal but I also need to play some pop songs occasionally. Maybe something close to Satchel's tone in Steel Panther. Budget is around 1000€, but I'd like to be able to break even with the JVM if I sell that.

I just played the new Marshall DSL15H and was quite impressed. Still fairly loud but sounded pretty good at lower volumes and will be a hell of lot lighter. I played it through a Mesa 112 cab.

Otherwise, there are 4 or 5 Egnater amps I could recommend.

fwiw i'd say satchel's tone is a fair bit more modern and saturated than early vh.

i'd get the amp decided first, and then get a cab with whatever you've got left. That's not to say the cab and speakers aren't important (they are, they're super important), but if you get a head that'll do what you want there are some fairly decent cheaper plywood cabs available (e.g. the harley benton g212 with v30s) that would easily tide you over until you could get a better cab (if you even need a better cab).

I figured I could get a Van Halen-like sound, and maybe use an overdrive to tighten it up a bit for Steel Panther.

I've been looking at the 5150, but I'm still worried it'll still be too loud. I figure it won't be too much quieter than my JVM. I'll check out the Egnaters too.

normally higher gain rock amps are fairly loud... and it's not like 20 watts is quiet, either.

however... if you do want to go for lower wattage (and bear in mind i'm not endorsing doing this, it may work better for your situation, it may not) i think that krank i mentioned is also available in a 20 watt head. or you could get a marshall 18 watt clone head and hit it with a boost or distortion pedal. One with power scaling or VVR would be a better idea, though.

There really is only one option here, and that's the 5150 III Mini

All else is inferior.

I mean, there are other good options listed, but if you want to Nail EVH and be able to do other Glam tones, there is literally no better option, bar the full-size 5153. I mean, the only other amp I would highly recommend to nail those 80's tones is a SLO, but if you want to nail EVH, GET HIS DAMN AMP.

Are all the 50W 5150 III's Minis? None of them are called Mini on Thomann.

In the same vein, has anyone some experience with power attenuators. I also though about just getting a Hot Plate or something for my JVM, since it's a great amp, I just can't crank it at all. Would an attenuator get me cranking it, or just a little closer?

It won't give you what you want, no. Read this:

and you'll better understand why that is. The cranked sound isn't all about the Power Tubes, it's got much more in the equation.

Attenuators are nice when you need a small reduction in volume but beyond that I wouldn't recommend one. I.e. if you were talking live playing and loved your amp's sound at 8 volume but wanted the volume more like 6.5 or something. YMMV and all that, but it won't get you the sound your amp has at 7 or 8 volume on .5 or anything like that b/c of what was mentioned/linked to above- speaker sensitivity, characteristics of the output transformer, etc.

I'm not familiar w the satchel tone, idk how "modern" it is, but how much does the H+K tubemeister 18W run for where you live?

You should recommend this in 12 or 13 more threads. I think this is only the third time I've seen it from you in the past 4 threads I've looked at.

Just because you love your amp doesn't mean everyone else will and that it's the perfect amp for them. Calm down there, killer.

An attenuator is not some magical device that'll give you the pushed sound at low volumes. The most you'll get your pushed sound down is by a fraction.
