This would be a 1971 Marshall Super Lead 100w. I made a thread about it last week talking about how I had bought it, but hadn't picked it up yet, and I was advised to delete the thread and wait till I actually had it in my possession. So here it is!

This mother ****er is LOUD AS SHIT. At home, I'm playing it through an old accordion amp that someone had taken the amp out of and left the speaker (so basically, it's a cab). At band practice and shows, I'm playing through a newer Marshall cab that I"m gonna eventually mod to my liking.

I also included a picture of the distortion box I'm using. The MXR Custom Badass 78 Distortion. It's one of the best distortion pedals I've had the privilege of trying.

Also included are my main axes. A white Gibson Explorer Limited Edition with the Floyd Rose, and a "Fibson" Les Paul with modded pickups (SD Pearly Gate in the bridge and a 59 in the neck).

I'll post some sound bites once I can get some good sounding ones.

oh my, that is fuking awesome.

i bet it is loud as all hell.

also, try jumping* the inputs and using the two different volume knobs to dial it in.

* jumping means plugging the an extra patch cord from the bright to the normal inputs. since the inputs on the channels are run in parallel this would let you run both channels at once and you can 'mix' each channel with the volume knobs. sounds great when you do this.

awesome amp right there. would you agree that the volume is pretty much maxed out at about 4 or 5 and after that it just gets dirtier?

that's my experience with them. my '72 fifty watter was like that.

I actually haven't gotten it past 1. :haha :haha I live in a neighborhood with a bunch of tightasses, so I'd definitely get the police called on me. When I practice with my band next, I'm definitely turning it the hell up though. :haha

Also, I was going to jump them, but I didn't have any extra cables. :shrug:

Anyone know anything about attenuators? And what they would do? I read an article, but I need it in Lehman's terms. :haha I'm under the impression that it would allow me to play it without it being so loud (for playing at home, and such). Is that correct?

attenuators bleed off some of the signal that would go to the speaker (it gets sent to a 'dummy load' instead). i have one built into my THD bivalve (they use an attenuator instead of a master volume) but i am not very impressed with it. i don't ever remember using it.

whenever i engage the attenuator i lose some of that high end. from what i have heard attenuators are good for running the power tubes real hard but you lose quite a bit of tone if you bleed too much signal to the attenuator.

in other words, over using the attenuator sucks tone. using the attenuator sparingly can be quite useful and good sounding but doesn't provide the volume cut most people expect.

the weber mass attenuator is supposed to provide a 'reactive' load that is better at emulating a speaker.

I'm prett jealous of the Plexi. I want one, but would honestly never use it to it's potential. I've also been kinda eyeing that MXR pedal.

Also, I have a similar pickup setup in my Epi Les Paul. I have the AlNiCo II Pro in the neck, though. It's a pretty good setup ;)

1 - well that amp likes to be cranked. at low volumes it's going to sound thin and devoid of bass. for practice that may work fine for you, it will have no problem cutting through at band practice like a hot chainsaw through warm butter.

3 - what gumbi said. but generally speaking attenuators don't turn 100 watt volume vvhores into bedroom friendly amps. they can be helpful in taming things a bit, but they just aren't the magic boxes a lot of people think they are. losing some of the highs that your amp puts out probably isn't a bad thing, opinion.

Plexi's are one of my favorite amps, I really want the JMP 2203/2204. Maybe one day.

As I said in your Pre-NAD, congrats! That is one awesome amp. I have been finding myself to be increasingly in need of a Marshall Head/Cab, when I say need read that to be I want it a lot. Kind of like when my 4 year old says he "needs" candy. ;)

Well, I never remove the jumper so I thought I'd make something tailored for the job. It's just two pancakes ground down to the the right size on a bench grinder. I laid some heavy gauge copper wire inside it and soldered it in for structural strength and complete the earth connection then a single wire to connect the tips. Didn't take very long to make.

use the patch cable you are using for the mxr and jumper the amp. then return the pedal to store :poke: lol. I think this is the first time seeing a modded ds-1 hooked up to a plexi. i think the badass overdrive would serve you better. you would probably want to put it in flat eq settings though since to much mids can lead to a honky sound.

Not for the style of music my band plays, it wouldn't. I need a bit more than OD for most of my band's songs.
Now, my blues side project on the other hand...

You need to get a new set of matching power tubes. I say go SED=C= or Genelex 6550's then your amp would be boss.

Doesn't get much better than a Plexi! HNAPD! I agree about the channel jumping too.
