Peavey JSX: what's its weakness?

Seems to be a very highly recommended amp on here (and elsewhere). So much so that I started checking out demos and it seems like it does everything pretty well. I've seen a few demos of it doing everything from jazz to metal, and doing a good job of it. Also seems to sound good at lower volumes.

So what does this amp NOT do well?

ihartfood 01-10-2013 08:04 PM

blues and low gain tones. i struggled to get a low gain crunch (ala thin lizzy, kansas) and it just wouldn't do it. there was too much or not enough. blues like SRV or clapton is hard as well.

but with a OD into the clean channel the possibilities are endless.

oh wait.
it has a low gain input doesn't it?
i didn't that, but unless you're willing to A/B the two channels, then

My only gripe with my old JSX was the Noise gate sucks and it sounds best with KT77 tubes

It's not a 6505. It can do certain types of metal very well, but it's not a 6505. You can't get that massive palm mute sound out of it without running some pedlage in front.

The soft fleshy part behind its knee.

^ if only I could hit it with an arrow

damn it's been a while without those jokes

I used to be an amplifier like you. Then I took an arrow in the knee.

As for the TS, a good example would be the Egnater Vengeance and 5153. They both cover similar ground in terms of versatility, but each has different voicings in terms of both cleans and overdrive, so each one suits different things. The JSX would fall into that too.

Yeah, it has a low gain input. I kinda dig this dude's blues tone. It's not a vintage blues tone; more along the lines of a Bonamassa or Eric Johnson or something (both of whom I really like).

And I'm guessing this guy is using an OD of some kind, but this tone would be a passable SRV, yes?

Deadpool_25 01-10-2013 10:20 PM

And I'm guessing one of the ODs in my sig might be nice in front of it...?

ihartfood 01-10-2013 10:27 PM

haha yes, quite nice. but seeing as you have a JVM and a HRD...do you really need a jsx?

Perverockstar69 01-10-2013 10:49 PM

A friend has a JSX and IMO it covers an amazin ground with a really nice tone! The clean channel when it's on break up sounds pretty neat, I dig its hard rock/metal tone a lot too. I do believe it's a keeper for what I like.

Need? What does that have to do with anything? :)

JVM is for sale though. Not sure if it'll sell but if it doesn't, I could think of worse pairs. ;)

It does not do 6505 well. :haha:

gotcha

i like them. i haven't played enough to really find a weakness while i am playing the guitar, but an old band mate had one and i liked how it sounded. i played one at GC for a while and messed around with it, but from what i have played/heard/demo, it is a pretty good three channel amp, and at a reasonable price.

honestly the only weakness has been stated its not a 6505, but i don't like 6505's all that much so no debate there.

only major thing not to do would be use too much gain especially on the ultra channel. and hit it with a boost of some form.

tim is a great guy (toyroom) and i am sure you know him on here. he has built some nice OD's for me, and i bet he could help you with that aspect.

Burn the witch!

Deadpool_25 01-11-2013 11:55 AM

HRD just sold btw.

So...back to blues on the JSX...

Clean + Fulldrive 2 or OCD seem like a good match? I'm asking because the JSX is on the way and I'm getting all excited but I can't try it out yet lol.

Shinozoku 01-11-2013 12:28 PM

Yup.
