NGD: Peavey Valveking 412

Picked up a Peavey Valveking 412 cabinet today for $199, all original. Jacked in my 70s Laney Pro-Tube Lead (50w) and cranked it up. OMG. It made my pant legs sway. Nice tight bottom end and a lot of cutting highs. It's the best the Laney has sounded. I used to run the Laney through a Marshall 1960A 2x12 slant 3/4 cabinet, which is really nice, but I think I like the VK better with it. I haven't tried it yet with my Carvin V3M which is my primary head at this point but will tomorrow. But I'm quite pleased with the VK cab, especially at that price. It helps to be friends with the general manager at my local GC! In fact, my last NGD was a 96 Les Paul Standard (black) I got with tax and case for $1450 even. Psyched.

HNGD

Put some Celesion G12H30's or clones in the 2x12 cab you have, Laneys love those speakers.

It has two C75s in it now. The Carvin really likes it. I have a 112 Sheffield, the small Marshall, and now the VK. Now I'm covered for any size venue. Little places freak out when you roll in a 4x12. I'm not a volume monger and can get a good sound at any volume. And I really like the 50w spot, which is why I picked up the V3M. And I love it.

I tried out the VK cab today with a Bogner head and a very nice American butterscotch Tele. It sounded great. I like Bogners but in terms of handwired boutiques I am partial to Matchless, especially the Chieftan. I guess I am partial to EL84s. I like their chime and glassiness.

But the old Laney is just a very basic, one channel, rock machine. I've had it for 20 years and cut some very good stuff with it. A new round of tubes every couple of years keeps it raging. A little more noisy than the V3M though.

Here's the V3M rig.

I used to have a Laney 2x12 that was very similar to your marshall, I wish I would have never gotten rid of it.

It is a great little cab. Its got the Marshall thump but not quite enough air to move your shirt. I think I picked it up in 84, at Manny's, used. It sounds so sweet I've hung onto it over the years. Drove it with a JCM 800 combo, a Roland Bolt 60 head I pulled out of the combo and built an enclosure for it, and a B series Peavey Classic. And of course the Laney. And now the V3M really brings it to life.

If I can carve out a couple of hours tomorrow I've got to A/B the Laney and the V3M through the VK, and try it with a couple of my LPs.

Ok the V3M really likes the 412. Not sure it is better than the 2x12 Marshall but it is good.
