Correlation between guitar prowess and chopsticks usage?
Don't know if there has been any scientific studies citing dexterity/speed on guitar, and chopsticks usage, but I'll ask you guys this:
How many of you people here on U.G. can use chopsticks? And if you can use chopsticks, does that correlate to your ability on guitar? EDIT: well.... after reading some of the comments, I should add that I can play guitar fairly well (see my signature, that's me in the video), but I can't use chopsticks very well, in fact, when I go to Chinese restaurants or Japanese restaurants, I'm like the only one using a fork!! LOL! I mean I look around the restaraunt and see white people and black people using chopsticks well, and I'm the only one using a fork, and I'm asian, LOL!! I was just curious what other people's experiece was |
I highly doubt that there is any correlation. As in, I'm practically saying that there isn't.
|
I can't use chopsticks or play guitar, so there's that :o
|
If anything, I'd think it would be related to fingerpicking rather than left hand speed.
Unless you're weird and use your dominant hand for one, and non dominant for the other :o Edit: forgot to mention, I'm pretty good at both. I don't know how I was with chopsticks before I started playing guitar. |
I'm incredibly clumsy and uncoordinated apart from guitar.
|
why would you think there's any correlation? the essential motions are completely different.
|
Considering that there are a hell of a lot of guitarists who use a knife and fork, shouldn't that show a correlation between guitar prowess and knife and fork usage?
|
I can use chopsticks, and i'm reasonably good at guitar. But chopstick usage predates me playing guitar.

I am pretty sure that playing guitar enhances your general dexterity a little bit, but has a lot more to do with specific training of your fingers. This way I could understand an influence of guitar playing on ones ability to type on a keyboard or play a piano, because it uses similar finger motions. Using chopsticks however is very far from challenging the same muscles or nerves that you need for playing guitar.
I have been playing guitar for years and mastered using chopsticks, but I had to train both individually. even years of guitar practice didn't help much with the chopsticks, I believe. |
im an elegant swan playing the guitar
im a two footed hippo everywhere else |
The only thing both have in common is that you have to practice using them. :p:
I'm awful at using chopsticks though. |
I'm confused, people use chopstix with their dominant hand.
And we use the fretboard with our opposite hand. |

That's a very right-handed way of looking at things |
I play Guitar and I suck balls with chopsticks.
Point disproved. |
Haha I picked up chopsticks fairly easily. On the other hand I do absolutely suck at guitar hero, yet I've been playing guitar for 20 years!
|
I play guitar quite allright and I can use chopsticks.
|
Of course there' a correlation. Asians are awesome at guitar.
|
I USED TO BE RUBBISH WITH CHOPSTICKS NOW I PLAY GUITAR AND I'M GOOD BUT TO BE HONEST I THINK IT'S JUST A LEARNING CURVE.
|
