Grease-like substance on output transformer
 

I'm in the process of taking my 6505+ apart to do some cosmetic mods and noticed that there appears to be some sort of grease on the output transformer.

Is this normal? If so what is it and what does it do?

I don't want to clean it off if it's supposed to be there, but it looks a bit odd.

Is it actually viscous liquid or does it just appear to be viscous liquid? I've seen transformers that have some kind of sealant on them that appears to be leaking out, but it was hardened to the touch.

If it is actually viscous liquid then it is most likely the wax used in the transformer... From what I've heard and read this is not really anything to be concerned about. :shrug:

Here's some pictures. The stuff is not viscous, it has hardened and just looks a bit unsightly IMO. I don't think I really want to try and chip it off and risk damaging a connection with the wires though.

You can see it on the red wire mostly.

Ya that's similar to what I've seen before. From what I understand that's a varnish-like substance they use to seal the transformer, and sometimes it just gets messy. It's nothing to worry about.

I would just leave it, not doing any harm..

Yup. Normal, though there's no harm in removing it, and damaging the wires is very unlikely, unless you decide to remove the wax with pliers.
